Description

J. H AMZA. RAIL JOINT. APPLICATION IILBD DBO. 27, 1910.
Patented May 2, 1911.v
WITNESSES.-
JULIUS HAMZA, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
RAIL-JOINT.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs IIAMZA, a subject of Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in the town of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail joints, and has for its object, among other things to construct a rail so that the same may interlock with the rail adjacent thereto and secured by a single pin as distinguished from the usual method of securing rail ends together by plates and bolts.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the rail joint, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a side elevation of two rails constructed in accordance with my invention and secured together; Fig. 2 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 1 with the key removed; Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the rail shown at the left of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the rail shown at the right'of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 5 is an end view of the rail, shown in Fig. 8 Fig. 6 is an end view of the rail, shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the rail taken upon line AB of Fig. 3; and Fig. 8 is a similar view taken upon line CD of Fig. 3; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the locking key.
I11 the practice of my invention, one end of the rail 1 is constructed substantially as shown in Figs. 8 and 5, and the other end substantially as shown in Figs. 4: and 6, each end being provided with a tongue 3, which projects downwardly from the top 4 of the rail, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and upwardly from the bottom 5, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and connected with the top 4 and bottom 5 by means of the angular faces 6. Adjacent to said tongues are the pockets 7 that are of substantially the same width and parallel with said tongues, and terminate at their open end in the throat 8, having angular sides, corresponding in their angle with that of the faces 6. Each of the Specification of Letters Patent.

rails is provided with a key opening 9, the top and bottom of which are substantially parallel with each other, and the top and bottom of the rail, and the sides are angular so that the width of the key opening at the ends is greater than at any point therebetween. The ends of the abutting rails 1 and 2 are secured together by placing the same on the ties and moving them toward each other, at which time the tongue 3 upon one of the rails enters the pocket 7 in the other rail, forming a connection as shown in Fig. 2. They are then secured together by a key 10, the body of which has grooved sides 11, and in cross section is the same as the key opening 9. The key is passed through the key opening 9 with the head 12 thereon abutting against one side of the web of the rail, and prevented from being accidentally dislodged therefrom by a cotter pin 13, projecting through the hole 14 in said key.
In my invention, as herein shown, the rails are secured together by the insertion of a single key, an operation that requires practically little or no time, and the engagement of the tongue 3 upon one rail with the pocket 7 in the other rail, cooperates to form a joint that is rigid and will prevent lateral or endwise movement of one rail in relation to the other.
In minor details my invention may be modified considerably from the construction shown in the drawings, and I would there fore have it understood, that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A rail constructed with a tongue ateither end thereof, the tongue at one end projecting downwardly from the top of said rail, and at the other end upwardly from the bottom thereof; a pocket at each end of said rail adjacent to said tongue, the pocket at that end of the rail adjacent to the tongue projecting downwardly from the top thereof, opening at the bottom of said rail, the pocket at that end of the rail adjacent to the tongue projecting upwardly from the bot tom thereof, opening at the top of said rail.
2. A rail constructed with a tongue at either end thereof, the tongue at one end projecting downwardly from the top of sald rail, and at the other end upwardly from the bottom thereof; a pocket at each end of said rail adjacent to said tongue, the pocket at that end of the rail adjacent to the tongue projecting downwardly from the top thereof, opening at the bottom of said rail, the pocket at that end of the rail adjacent to the tongue projecting upwardly from the bottom thereof, opening at the top of said rail; and a key opening through the Web of said rail at substantially a right angle to said pocket.
3. A rail constructed with a tongue and a pocket at each end thereof, said pocket opening into a throat With flaring sides, and 15 said tongue terminating at its bottom end in a portion having flaring sides With substantially the same angle as those of said throat; and a key opening through the Web of said rail at substantially a right angle to said 2() pocket.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
