Underordinary circumstances when the exhaust is forced directly to the muilier, there is considerable' back-pressure resulting in a certain loss of power by impeding the action of the motor, consequently, what are known as cut out" valves,- are frequently provided wherebytheexhaust'may be permitted to escape-directly'through the valve and into the air instead .of through the muiiier. In exhaust valves-and horns of this class, there is atendencyof the parts and ports to be come covered and clogged with carbon in the form of soot by the action of the exhaust gases,-and the primary, object of this invention is to provide aenerallyimprovedcombined Cut-0L1i',V flI1d signal horn of this class, of simple, cheap, and eiiicient construction, in which the several parts are so disposed, constructedfiand arranged asto reduce the above mentioned tendency'to'a minimum. p a
A further object of the invention is to provide avalve of this class capable of receiving the exhaust from explosive engines and distributing thesame either to the Inuflier or to another point of discharge without producing an undue accumulation ofbackpressure. The improved valve and horn comprises a valve body or casing 1, (preferably of cy-' lindrical form as shown) and provided with oppositely arranged and extending branches 2, and 3, to receive and contain the inlet and outlet branches 4, and 5, of the exhaust pipe, the outlet branch 5, thereof being adapted to lead to a mufiier when the exhaust is from an explosive engine.
The valve body or casing is provided at one side and intermediate the branches2,
and 3,witha cut-out port-opening 6, and at the other with a horn or Whistle slot 7. The
port opening 6, is preferably beveled as shown, and is normally closed by means of a valve-head 8, provided with beveled or flaring sides 8, the correspondingly beveled edges of the cutout opening 6. As a means for opening and closing the port opening 6, the valve -head is mounted upon and carried by an operating lever 9, mounted outside of the valve body and, in the present instance, ,pivotally secured thereto by means of a bearing-arm or-standard 1 0. The valve-head 8, is normally held in its closed position by means of a spring 11, in the present instance, secured tothe bearing-arm or standard 10. When'it is desired to discharge the exhaust gas directly into the atmosphere or to relieve any undue back-pressure resulting from the exhaust being forced directly to the muflier, the valve-head 8, is adapted to be lifted or opened by means of suitable connections or operating means connected to the free end 9, of the lever 9.

As a means for; returning the valve-head 13, to its initial position shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings, the leverbar 16, may be provided with a spring 19, suitably connected whereby the lever-bar 16 will be moved against the resistance of sai spring. As a means for limiting the movements of the lever-bar 16, and stopping the valve-head 13, in its proper positionsrwhen reciprocated, stop-lugs or pins 20, maybe formed, integral with the head 14, of the valve casing as shown.
