WILLIAM W. LASKER, OF NEVI YORK, N. Y.
CARRIAGE-FEEDING MECHANISM FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
anonce.
Original application filed December 12, 1908, Serial No. 467,238.
Serial No. 494,565.
To all lwho/m il may concern:
le it' known that l', WILLIAM YV. Laskua, a citizen ot the` United States, and resident ot Yew 'York city, in the county of Kings and `citate ot New York, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Can ringeFeeding;v Mechanism :for '.lylie-lVritf ing; Machines, ot which the following is a sptaitication.
',lhis :duplication a division of my application tor im|novements in tyriewriting.;l nauehines, tiled December 1:2, 1908, Serial No. 407.238, and the object ot the invention is to provide improved means for causing positive teedir l olf the paper carriage and to permit the ready release and return of the carriage as requireifl.
lu carrying,` out my invention I provide a ly; rewriting ma chine having a carriage, with ew extending,l longitudinally with re- :t to the carriage, a nut adjustably conneeted with the carriage for co-action with said screw, and means for placingr the nut into and out of operative correlation with the screw, wlu-reby the carriage may be manually shi'l'ted while the screw remains in its opiafative position in the frame.
i i f' invention -further comprises the novel details ot' improvement and combinations of parts that will be more tully hereinafter f-i-t tor-th and then pointed out in the claims.
Helft-renee is to be had to the accompanyine drawings 'tor-ming part hereof, wherein,
liirure l a trent elevation ol a type- -writinp inarhino embodying my improvements, parts heine' broken away and other parts removed, lfig. 2 is a partly sectional end view ot the machine looking trom ihe lelt in Fig. l, Iiig. I is a detail illustrating the carriage feeding ratchet and pawl device, Fien l is a similar view, showing the parts in a i'litl'erent position, Fig. 5 isa detail perspective view ol part of the carriage *leerling devices, `l"i'. is a cross section on the line (E, t3, in ltijg. 5, Fig. 'i' is a perspective detail ol part'I olf the carriage, Fig. S is a detail perspective of the shiftingl or slide. member ol.' Fie'. ."i, and Fie'. t) is a detail ol the nut ol' the carriage 'leeding device.
tdimilar numerals ol reference indicate ooi-resilending parts in the several views.
l`he numeral l indicates themain frame ot the machine, which may be of any suitable construction, and at. 2 are key levers ha ving; their keys QiL arranged in any suit- Speeieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Divided and this application filed May 7,
key levers, as at 1l, and said links each have a rearward projection 11, the under surface ot' which is shown curved at 11c and rests upon an abutment shown in the 'forni of a traverse bar or roller 'l2 supported by trame 1 in any suitable manner, as upon the slotted member 13 thereof, all whereby as a key lever is depressed it will tend to draw the corresponding link 1,1., and as the projection lll ot' such link rides over the abutment or bar 12 said link will be caused to swing,` toward the trent. A spring 14: attached to each link 11 and to a rod 14 on trame 1 tends normally to draw and maintain the respective parts in the posi; tions shown in Fig. Q, for as the key lever is released the spring llt by drawing back the link 11 will cause the type bar to be depressed and the key lever to be raised. At l5 is a screw or spiral worm extending lengthwise below the paper carriage and suitably jourualed, as by pivotsor studs 1G carried by `trame l, which screw or worm is suitably pitched and preferably is a compound screw. Step by step rotation of said screw is given for each depression of a type key or space key, for which purpose I have shown a suitable ratchet wheel 17 secured at opposite ends of the screw and operated by pawls 1S carried by rocking arm or lever It) hungr concentric with or upon a suitable portion ot' screw '15. 'lhe rocking arm or lever 1S) is provided with two depending arms connected together by a cross bar 2O locate/l above the projections 11b of links l1, a brace Qt also being' shown connecting the dependingl arms ot the rocking. arm or level'. rThe projections 1l" are provided with 11pwardly extending lugs il adapted to engage cross bar 2() at the appropriate time. 'lhe relation ol' the parts is such that as a key lever or space key is depressed the corresponding lug 1l'l will engage the cross bar i3() and thus cause pawls 18 to operate ratehets 1T to rotate screw or worm 15 the appropriate distance for each tor-.Tard step nient of ke levers 2 before lues lla en 'aefe cross bar 2G, then before the completion of the down stroke of the key lever lng lid will engage cross bar 20 to cause appropriate movement of screw l5.Y To cause screw l5 to come to rest just before the key strikes the paper, pawis 1 8 are disengaged from the corresponding ratchets, which may be accomplished by means of a lug 18e on the pawl engaging stud '22 placed in suitable relation upon frame l (see Figs. 3 and d), whereby pawls i8 will he in engagement with the ratchets for a suitable distance ol the movement of the pawls and as lugs 18 engage studs 22 and ride on the latter the pawls will be moved out of engagement with the ratchets and the screw l5 and the carriage will be at rest at the moment the type strikes the pa er. The paper carriage, indicated general y at 25, and which may be of any suitable construction, may be guided by rod 26 secured upon frame l (as by brackets 2?) the carriagev being shown provided with yolres 25 open at the bottom fitting over and sliding,z upon rod 26, whereby the carriage may be readily lifted ed the frame.
The carriage 25 is provided with a nut or internally threaded piece 28 fitting the threads oi' screw or worm l5, and means are provided for raising and lowering nut 2O out ci' and into engagement with screw l5 as required -for adjustmentof the carriage. Nut 28 is n'iovably connected with Carriage 25, and for this purpose said nut is shown provided with a stem 28a having slots 28b receiving the shank portions of screws 29 which are secured in a lug 30 depending from the carriage, whereby nut 28 may have up and down movement. Nut 28 carries pin 2SC that enters a suitable slot 31a in a slide 3l that is carried by carriage 25. Slide 3l is shown mounted to slide alongthe bar 25b of carriage 25, which slide pro vided with longitudinally extending slots 31h in portions 3l that receive pins 32 eritendingA from the carriage, and slide 3l is also shown provided with handles 31d' whereby the slide may be shifted upon' the carn ringe. A spring a connected with pin b on slide 31, and with the carriage (as with pin 32) maintains slide 31 in the normal position shown in Fig. 5, and automatically returns slidel. Slot 31 is shown havinga horizontal portion and an upwardly inclined portion, the arrangement being` such that when the slide is in one positionvthe pin 28C of nut 28 will be in the horizontal portion of slot 31FL and thus the threads of the nut will beheld in engagement with the threads of screw l5, and when the slide moved to the opposite position pia m will ride np the vratchets 17 means to operate the scr eed-see inclined portion ot slot 3lthereby raising nut 28 out of engagement with screw l5 to permitthe carriage to be shi"ted.by hand, whereupon slide 3l will again be moved in the opposite direction to canse nut 2S to en-y gage screw l5. 1lWhen the nut is raised :from screw 15th@ carriage may rest upon rail lX on frame l. Spring detente 15X acting on retain screw l5 in nornial'position.
My invention is not limited to the details of construction and arrangements of parts shown and described, as the saine may be varied within the scope of the appended c aims without departing,` from the spirit ot' my invention.
