BURGLAR ALARM. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 22, 1910.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
I awuwflioz GEO/P65 0. 4. r044 UNTTE STATES A GEORGE COLVIN LYON, 0F MAGEE, MISSISSIPPI.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application filed October 22,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon C. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Magee in the county of Simpson and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to alarms adapted to be used in connection with doors, gates and the like in which the opening of the door sounds the alarm, and the principal object of the same is to provide a simple door bracket which will automatically operate the alarm when the door is opened.
In connection with the foregoing, the invention also contemplates simple means for l rendering the alarm mechanism inoperative so that when desired, the door can be opened without sounding the alarm.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a door and door frame equipped with the improved alarm. Fig. 2 is a view inside elevation thereof. Figs. 3 and 4c are detail sectional views of the alarm operating mechanism. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the blank fronrwhich the operation bracket is formed. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the finished bracket.
Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the improved alarm comprises a. spring motor 1 that is preferably of the type used in connection with alarm clocks, the motor being I inclosed by casing plates 2 one of which is fastened to the upper portion of a door frame. The said motor 1 includes the usual escapement wheel 3 and the escapement 4 that is rocked by said Wheel. A spring arm 5 projects from the escapement and carries a Fatented Apr. 25, 1911.
1910. Serial No. 588,520.
clapper 6 which strikes the bell 7 that is carried by a transom or other parts of a door frame when the arm 5 is vibrated by the escapement 4.
The escapement wheel 3 projects below the outer plate of the motor casing and the teeth thereof are engaged by a bracket carried by the door so that said wheel cannot revolve when the door is closed. When the door is opened, the bracket is disengaged from said wheel, and said wheel is free to revolve and rock the escapement 4 so that the arm 5 and clapper 6 will cause the bell 7 to ring continuously. Said bracket is preferably formed of a single length of sheet metal bent to provide a body 8 provided with end openings 9 through which detachable fasteners 10 pass to secure the body to the door. An arm 11 projects outward from said body 8 at a right angle, and one longitudinal edge is provided with an upstanding cam lip 12 which engages the teeth of the escapement wheel 3 to prevent the same revolving when the door is closed.
In connection with the foregoing, the invention contemplates pivotally mounting a hand lever 13 on the transom or other parts of the door frame and which is provided with an angular abutment end 14: that is rocked into engagement with spring arm 5 to prevent movement of the same. Said lever is used principally in the day when it is not necessary for the alarm to be sounded if the door should be opened.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An alarm comprising a spring motor carried by a door frame and including an escapement wheel, a vibratory arm operated thereby, a clapper carried by said arm, a bell carried by the transom adjacent said clapper. a door bracket provided with a lip for en gaging said escapement wheel to prevent rotation thereof when the door is closed, and a hand lever pivotally connected to said transom and adapted to be rocked into engage ment with said arm to prevent movement thereof.
2. An alarm comprising a motor including an escapement wheel, said motor adapted to In testimony whereof I hereunto affiX my signature 1n presence of two wltnesses.

be fastened to a door frame, a bell, means carried by said motor for sounding said bell, and a bracket adapted to be fastened to a door and provided With an upstanding cam i lip Which engages said escapement Wheel Witnesses: When the door is closed to prevent the motor A. F. GATES,
