Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Application filed September 9, 1909. Serial No. 516,861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERVIN DANIEL Lower, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at F erron, in the county of Emery and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SpringJVheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
lily invention relates to improvements in spring wheels, and has for its object to provide a spring wheel, which will readily yield to the surface of the road as well as to all inequalities and obstructions encountered, the compression and jarring to which it is subjected being absorbed and compensated for by other portions of the wheel.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the course of the following specification.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my wheel. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a"00 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of my wheel. Fig. 4e is a section on the line p z of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the rim of a wheel, which is preferably made of resilient metal. To the inside and centrally of the rim at equi-distant intervals are suitably secured short spokes, alternately designated 2 and 3, the tops or free ends of which are bifurcated, as at 2 and 3 respectively. In each bifurcation 2 are pivoted the vertically arranged reduced ends 1* and 5 of a pair of oppositely disposed diagonal arms or rods 4 and 5, which are both laterally inclined in the same direction. In each bifurcation 3 are pivoted the reduced vertical ends 6 and 7 of a pair of oppositely arranged diagonal arms or rods 6 and 7, which are both inclined laterally in the same direction, but in a direction opposite to that of the rods 4 and 5, as best shown in Fig. 2.
Each of the arms 4 and 5 is provided with a reduced vertically arranged inner end 4: and 5 respectively, and are pivoted in pairs, that is, the end 4 of each rod 4 is pivoted to the end 5 of the opposite rod 5, by suitable means in bifurcations formed in the vertically arranged ends 8 of arms or rods 8. The arms 8 are laterally extended, but at their inner ends are provided with vertically extended portions 8 having bifurcations into which projects a flange 9 to which they are pivoted. Flange 9 is secured in a circumferential groove 10 formed near the end of a hub 11.
Each of the arms 6 and 7 is provided with a reduced vertically-arranged inner end portion 6 and 7", respectively, and are pivotally secured in pairs, that is, the end 6" of each arm 6 is pivoted to the end 7 of the opposite arm 7, by suitable means in a bifurcation formed in the vertically-arranged end 12 of an arm 12. The arms 12 are laterally extended and oppositely inclined to the arms 8 and are provided at their inner ends with a vertical portion 12 provided with a bifurcation into which proj ects a portion of a. circumferential flange 13 secured in a circumferential groove 14: formed near the other end, or end opposite to that carrying the flange 9, of the hub 11.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, which illustrate a modified form of my wheel, 15 designates the rim which is preferably formed of resilient metal, the same as the rim shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Suitably secured at equi-distant points centrally of the inside of the rim 15 are short spokes 16. The spokes are bifurcated, as at 1.6 at their inner or free ends, and in each bifurcation is pivoted the reduced ends 17 a and 18 of a pair of oppositely disposed diagonal arms or rods 17 and 18. The inner ends of the diagonal arms 17 and 18 are re duced as at 17 and 18", and are pivoted in pairs, that is, the end 17 b of the arm 17 and the end 18 of the arm 18 are pivoted, by suitable means, in bifurcations 19 formed in the ends of yokes 20. The yokes 20 comprise oppositely divergent or laterally disposed arms 21 and 22, the inner ends 21 and 22 respectively, of which are vertically arranged and suitably bifurcated, as shown. Into the bifurcations of the ends 21 of the arms 21 projects a flange 23 and into the bifurcations of the ends 22" of arms 22 projects a flange 24. Flange 23 is secured in a suitable circumferential groove 25 formed near the end of hub 26, and flange 21 is suitably secured in a circumferential groove 27 formed near the other end of the hub.
It will be noted in Figs. 1 and 2, that the vertical reduced end portions 1 5 4 5 6, 7 6 and 7 are suitably rounded at their ends, and are so pivoted in the bifurcations, hereinbefore referred to, as to allow for their free movement. So also with Figs. 3 and t, the reduced end portions 17 18 17 and 18 have their ends rounded and are so pivoted in the bifurcations as to admit of their free movement.
What I claim is 1. In a spring wheel provided with a flanged hub, spokes provided with bifurcati ons, divergently arranged laterally inclined arms provided with vertical end portions, said vertical end portions of said divergently-arranged arms being pivotally mounted in the bifurcations of said spokes, and laterally inclined arms provided with vertical portions, the vertical portions of said laterally inclined arms having bifurca tions, the vertical end portions of said divergently-arranged laterally inclined arms and the flanges of the hub of said wheel being pivotally mounted in the bifurcations of the vertical portions of said laterally inclined arms.
2. A spring wheel comprising a flanged hub, bifurcated spokes carried by the rim of said Wheel, toggles pivotally mounted within the bifurcated ends of said spokes, laterally inclined arms provided with vertical end portions, said vertical ends being provided with bifurcated ends, each of said arms having a pair of toggles pivotally mounted in its bifurcated outer end and the bifurcated inner end being pivotally connected to said flanged hub.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
