Description

ALSON A. STONE, OF SHIRLEY, MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Paten No. 99,028, dated January 18, 1870.
Q-.r--w
IMPRO'VED DIE FOR FDRMING- SHUTTLE-SPINDLE HEA'DS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all-whom it may concern,-
Be it known that I, ALSON A. STONE, of Shirley, in the county otv Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in the Method of Forming Shuttle-Spindle Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. r
My invention relates to an improved method of forming shuttle -spindle heads by compression, by means of dies, operated in a drop or tilt-hammer.
To enable others skilled in the art to makrevand use my invention, I will proceed to describe it construction and operation. l
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved die.
Figure 2 represents an end view.
Figure 3 represents a side elevation of the nishing represent the hammer and base of the die-block, in
either of which is formed a recess, c, its depth being the thickness of head desired.
On each side oi this die-block a and b, are irmly secured the die-plates d and e, in which are formed the dies f and g. 1
Connecting with the dies f and g, and formed in the plates d and e, is the chamber or seat la., in which rests the spindle i while-the heads are lbeing formed.
The ordinary and common method practised in forming and making shuttle-spindle heads, has been' to forge them out by hand, which, owing to their irregular shape, and requiring invariably three separate heats to bring them to this rough unfinished state,
, after which they require a great deal of time and 1abor to nish the same perfectly, as demanded by the shuttle, render the manufacture of them extremely slow, and also expensive. v
With the use of my improved device these difficilities are obviated. The spindle being provided with a blank head, j, as shown in iig. 4 of the drawings, is heated as desired. Y The part a, of thedie-block, being secured to the drop or tilt-hammer, and the part b secured to the base of' the same, they having been previously provided-with the required dies f and g, the operator takes the spindle e', previously heated, places the same in the recess h, so. as to bring the blank-head j on or over the die. The drop or tilt-hammer is then operated, which brings the top part of the die in contact with the same, compressing it into the required shape. It is then removed and placed in the recess c, as shown in ig. 2 of the drawings, where it is compressed to its required thickness, it then being removed and placed in the die g, as shown in tig. 3, which is similar in size and shape to the one first operated, as shown in iig. 1 of the drawings, where it recei-ves its true, perfeet, and final form oi' shape, as shown in iig. 5 of the drawings, this entire operation being done by once heating the blank-head j, and by three drops or blows of the hammer, the spindle-head lc bengthus perfectly formed as the die itself, receiving its final finish by being polished.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction, in two sections or blocks, of the dies for forming shuttie-spindle heads, said dies b'eing of the form substantially as herein described.
