HUGOVYAGER, OF BRADLEY BEACH, NEW JERSEY.
PASSENGER-RECORDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO YAGER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Bradley Beach, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Passenger-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to recorders for passengers entering railway7 cars or vehicles used to transport passengers and its object is to provide a device automatically operated by each passenger as he enters the car and to make a record of his entrance in one of the registers commonly employed for such purposes, the parts being so arranged that while the device is operatedby the person entering the car, it is locked against operation when any one leaves, as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in thc drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the door of a car showing the improved recorder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4 is a similar view of Fig. 1 but showing the parts locked against operation. Fig. 5 shows a registering device which may be used in connection with this invention.
The device is located at the door of the car or vehicle and is part of the floor and platform adjacent to the door, the floor 10 being slightly elevated, as usual, above the platform 11, the latter having a movable section 12 which is hinged on a shaft 13 beneath the door 14 of the car. On the outside of the car and before the door of same is a frame work 15 of lazy tongs adapted to be elevated by means of a knob 16 controlled by the foot of the conductor so as to prevent the entrance of a person in case he has not paid his fare. The knob 16 is on the upper end of a plunger 17 which bears upon the lever 18 carrying at its outer end a link 19 and connecting it with a lever 2O pivoted to the frame of the car, the other end of the lever being connected with the second joint of the lazy tongs so that with the depression of the knob and plunger, the frame work is elevated so as to prevent entrance through the door.
The hinged section 12 carries at its rear end the upright arms 21 having slots 22 at Specification of Letters Patent.

their outer end to receive pins 23 projecting from the ends of slides 24 which have hooks 25 at their rear ends. These slides 24 are carried on each side of a hinged step 26 similar to the section 12 but within the door of the car and when this step 26 descends, it strikes one end of a lever 27 pivoted at 28 and carrying at its outer end the vertical rod 29 attached at its upper end to a lever 30 journaled on a shaft 31 and having a pawl 32 to engage a ratchet wheel 33 on the shaft 31. The ratchet wheel 33 is secured to a wheel 34 with pins 35 in its periphery which enter sockets in a wheel 36 of the same size so that when the tape 37 from the wheel 3S passes between the two wheels the pins 35 puncture same for every passenger who enters the car.
The position of the step and platform shown in Fig. 1 is for recording the entrance of a passenger entering the car, in which case the section 12 is first depressed carrying the hooks 25 forward beyond the pins 40 and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When a passenger leaves the car and while the movable parts are occupying the positions shown in Fig. 1, the step 26 is already depressed but the position of the other parts is not changed. As he steps down upon the section 12, the hook 25 is withdrawn from the upper side of pin 40 and the slide and step 26 are immediately carried to the first position by the spring 41 again setting the device for the entrance of a passenger. If another passenger should leave the car, the pins 23 simply play in slots 22 and do not change the relationship of the parts because this movement is limited by the length of the slots and the play of slides 24 against the pins 40 is not enough to operate the rod 29 and alter the register. The lever 21 also has a spring 42 to return it and the section 12 to their normal positions.
The register shown in Fig. 5 may be also provided with a computator 43 connected with the lever 30 by the link 44 in order to provide consecutive numbering for the passengers in connection with the perforated strip 37.
It is obvious that the arrangement of the parts and the construction of the details may be modified or otherwise changed, without departing from the essential features above described, and shown in the drawings.
What claim as new and desire to secure bv Letters Patent is:
l. In a recorder of the class described, the combination with a platform, of a hinged step above said platform, a slidable lock carried by the step, and movable means on the plat-form and having Connection with said slidable means for operating the same, whereby the step may be locked.
Q. in a recorder of the character described, the combination with a platform, a movable section hinged to the platform, a step hinged to the floor of a car above said plat-form, a slide carried by the step and haying a hook, a pin fixed beneath the floor of such car and adapted for engagement by the hook of the slide for locking the step, and an arm on the hinged section of the platform to operate the slide for moving the same in position, whereby its hool will be prevented from engagement with the Plll.
3. In a recorder for passenger cars, the combination with a platform, of a section niorably connected with the plat-form, a step superposed above the platform, slidable members carried by the step and having hook terminals, arms tiXed to the section and having connect-ion with said members, stationary pins secured rearwardly of the seetion and adapted. for engagement with the hook terminals of said members on the depression of the said step, and springs to release the hook terminals from the pins on the raising of the section.
4. In a recorder, the combination with a platform, ay false section hinged to the same, a hinged step above the platform, slides connected with said step and hayino' inner hook ends, stationary pins adapted for engagement by the hooked ends, slotted arms tiXed to the false section and connected with the slides for moving the same, whereby the hook ends may be moved out of engagement with the pins, a recorder, and connections between the recorder and the said step.
ln testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
