Definitions
- My invention relates particularly to that kind of lock in which an index is employed to set the tumblers of the look by, to some given combination, or certain relative positions, so that the latch can enter the gates of the tumblers, and has for its object to render this look capable of being manipulated by the sense of feeling, readily, so that it can be operated in My invention consists in the employment of an adj nstable pointer upon the knob, and raised points upon the index-plate, by means of which the knob and index-plate, when turned, can be set in relation to a given point on the door bythe sense of feeling, to effect the adjustment of the tumblers, as will be presently more fully described.

Description
H. ISHAM. KNOB FOR PERMUTATION LOCKS.
N0. 98,971. Patented Jan. 18,1870.
' the dark with perfect convenience; and to this end waited finite HENRY ISHAM', OF NEW BRITAIN, GONI EGTIGU'I.
Letters Patent No. 98,971, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN moss ron PnRMnTA'rIoN-LocKs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, HENRY ISHAM, of New Britain, in the. county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in-Locks for Banks and Safes; and 'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon. 'My invention relates particularly to that kind of lock in which an index is employed to set the tumblers of the look by, to some given combination, or certain relative positions, so that the latch can enter the gates of the tumblers, and has for its object to render this look capable of being manipulated by the sense of feeling, readily, so that it can be operated in My invention consists in the employment of an adj nstable pointer upon the knob, and raised points upon the index-plate, by means of which the knob and index-plate, when turned, can be set in relation to a given point on the door bythe sense of feeling, to effect the adjustment of the tumblers, as will be presently more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it more fully, referringv by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a detached elevation of key-shaft and knob, with the gauge-point and pinion.
Figure 2 is a face view of the lock, showing distinc'tly the improved index-mechanism.
In theseveral figures the same part will be found designated by the same letter of reference.
At fig. 2 I have distinctly shown myimproved indexplate, or indicating-apparatus, which, in lieu of hav-' ing lines and numbers on the revolving plate and door-face, is provided with raised points or notches, at s a, which can be readily felt by the finger, and an index-point or protuberance, at t. -On the knob proper is arranged a pointer or projection, 17, which may be adjusted. and clamped at any given position on said knob.
By means of the arrangement shown, it will be seen that the manipulation of the lock may be performed at t, count, by sense of feeling, the number of points,
s, which pass t, say five hold there, and turn the pointer to that point; then turn to the left two times, stop the pointer at t; then count as before, turning left, say five, stop, and bring the pointer to thatpoint; then turn to right one turn and stop. From there, count, say, five stop; turn a little back, and pull the key-shaft out, to bring the pinion in meslrwith rack, and the bolt may then be turned or moved at pleasure.
Having explained my invention-'- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 The employment, in combination with a fixed point or projection on the'door, and an' adjustable pointer or projection on the knob, of raised points upon the index-plate, so that the index-apparatus can be operated solely by the sense of feeling, substantially as described' HENRY ISHAM. Witnesses:
Ausrm HART, It. S. Poa'rnn.
