Description
UNXTED rariinar orario i H. B. CONANT, OF GENEVA, WISCONSIN.
ABDOMINAL SUPORTER.
To a whom t may concern Be it known that l, H. B. CoNAN'r, ot' Geneva, in the county ot' Vialworth and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Abdominal and Spinal Supporter; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reiterence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specilication, Figure l being a front view of the said supporter, and Fig. 2 a section of the same in the line m m of Fig. l.
, Like letters designate corresponding parts in both iigures.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the supporter with two encomw passing springs A, and B, attached, respectively, at their centers, to the front and hind pads, the hind spring being slightly curved upward in the middle, and the front spring correspondingly curved downward; and uniting said springs, at their adjacent ends, with straps D, D, ot adjustable lengths; whereby its pressure may be varied at pleasure, and the same supporter worn by persons ot diierent sizes, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth.
The hind spring A, is attached by a pivot to a sho-rt perpendicular spring a, to the ends of which cross springs, bearing tour small pads 0, c, 0, c, are secured by pivots b. It is curved edgewise upward in the middle as shown in Fig. l, by which form it tits easily over the hips.
The tront'spring B, is pivoted at its center to the lower end of a short vertical spring CZ, whose upper end is secured to the upper part of the pad C, so that its lower end will recede a little from the lower edge oi said pad, as shown at y, in Fig. 2. By this arrangement, the pad C, is allowed considerable lateral play for adapting itself to the various positions of the body, and produces an upward as well as a horizontal pressure.
Said spring B, is curved downward in the middle, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to tit properly around the abdomen.
rlhe two springs A., and B, should be of about equal length, and together nearly en* compass the body, and should be straight on their dat sides when not in use, and be of such a degree of stitlqness that the desired amount of pressure will be produced when they are bent around the body. They are padded, as shown in the section, F ig. 2, so as to present a sott elastic surface to the body. Each end ci the hind spring is furnished with a strap D, in which button holes 7, f, ttc., are formed at various distances from the end, that receive buttons e, e, on the ends of the front spring B, whereby any degree of pressure may be produced and the supporter can be iitted to a person of almost any size.
Having thus tully described my improved abdominal and spinal supporter, what l claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Datent, isn
Constructing it with two encompassing springs A, B, attached respectively at their centers, to the front and hind pads; (the hind spring being slightly curved upward in the middle, and the front sl ring correspondingly curved downward, and both springs straight on their flat sides as described 3) and uniting said springs at their adjacent ends with straps D, D, oit adjustable lengths; whereby its pressure may be varied at pleasure, and the same supporter worn by persons of different-sizes, substantially as herein set forth.
yIthe above specification of my new and improved abdominal and spinal supporter signed by me this 7th day of April, 1853.
H. B. GDNANT.
