G. F. MoKEE.
GOMBINATION TOOL.
APPLIOATION FILED mm: 7, 1909,.
INVENTOR Patented Apr. 18, 1911.
GEORGE E. MCKEE, 0F ASPINWALL, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN T. HEUMILLER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
' Application filed June 7,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1911. 1909.. Serial No.500,505.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MCKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aspinwall, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements, in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of tools set forth and particularly to carpenters tools. and it has for its primary objects; the provision of an improved arrangement of the blade and handle of a saw; the provision of an improved blade and handle adapted for a number of tools, whereby the saw may be employed for a variety of uses, as shall hereinafter appear; and the provision of an improved means formounting the blade in the handle. My'inven'tion is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a saw embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of a portionof the handle showing a level mounted thereon, Fig. 3 isa section through IIL-III on Fig: 2, and Fig. 4 is a top elevation of a portion of the handle.
It will be seen on reference to the drawings that the device consists of a saw blade 1, having a smooth edge 2,-and,with the end edge 3 cut at; right angles and mounted in a handle 4 in such manner'that the smooth edge 2 is at right angles with a metal binding strip 5 mounted on the'handle.
The binding strip 5 is slotted in its middle to receive the'end of the sawblade, and ex-.
tends over-the top ofthe handle at 6, and furnishes. ai leveling surfaceat. 7 for a level I to be hereinafter described, qas; well as a square 'vifh'e'ni used with" the saw blade. I
The hand, hole8 "is-provided with two levzels 9 and 10"inounted iin'thelends of the slot,
the level 9 being" mounted parallel to the surface 7 ofthei binding stri 5,"and levell0 being adjusted paralle to t e smooth edge I 2 of the saw blade. This arrangement of the levels provides a plane level 10, and a plumb level 9 and also provides a novel and inexpensive mounting for the levels as they require no special holes but are inserted in the ends of the hand hole 8 which are at right angles to one another.
The levels 9 and 10 are retained in place each by two metal strips 11, 11, which are fastened to the exterior of the handle on each side, portions 12 being bent in and shaped to almost surround the level tube 10, and thus protect it and at the same time allow ample surface of the level to be visible.
The handle is further utilized as a scriber by providing a hole, with a small helical thrusting the scriber out when the lid 14 is slid aside, the same being pivoted and retained by the screw 15.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the fol lowing The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of an integral wooden handle in which the saw blade is mounted, an elongated hand opening in the handle having its sides substantially parallel and its ends turned at right angles to each other and constituting level receiving recesses, and a mounting for each of the levels comprising a pair of thin metal strips disposed on opposite sides of the handle adjacent the edge of the hand opening and practically surrounding and serving to secure the level in the hand opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in' the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
GEORGE F. MCKEE. Witnesses:
HARVEY L. Lnonmm, Anonwon'rn MARTIN.
