Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 14, 1909. Serial No. 472,281.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. ARBUTH- NOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Concentrating-Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in ore concentrating tables and more particularly to operating mechanisms therefor.
The object of the. invention is the production of a concentrating table provided with vibrating means adapted to move the table forward on its supporting members at a gradually increasing speed and return the table at a gradually decreasin speed whereby the gangue matter arranged on said table will be caused to suddenly slide thereon.-
\Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel, features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved concentrating table; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the table rocking mechanism.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are prepared for illustrative purposes and accordingly are not drawn to scale, 8 denotes a vibrating table which may be of any suitable or desired construction. The table 8 is preferably provided with a plurality of upstanding longitudinally extending rifiles 11, the riflles on the adjacent side to the edge piece 9, being of less height than the riffles on the opposite or tailing side 12 and the riffles intermediate of the extreme side riffles increasing gradually in height from the side adjacent to the edge piece 9 or the feed side to the tailing side, while all of the rifiles uniformly decrease in height from the rear head adjacent to the edge piece 10 to the opposite or front end. An operating rod or pitman 16 extending longitudinally of the table 8 and suitably secured thereto projects for a portion of its length rearwardly of said table and is connected by means of a Ushaped member 18 with the crank shaft or arm 21.
A bearing member 17 is connected with one end of a rod or arm 19 which is provided on its ends with right and left screw threads and a second two piece bearing member 20 is connected to the other end of said rod 19 by a threaded socket, the right and left screw I threads of said rod serving to adjust the members 17 and 20 thereon, whereby change in the direction of the stroke of the crank arm 21 and pitman 16 is effected for varying the vibration of the table 8. The bearing member 17 is connected with the crank shaft 21 which latter is secured in suitable bearings 22 on a supporting member 23, and the bearing member 20 connects with a second crank shaft 24 which is preferably secured at an elevation slightly above that of the crank 21 by a bearing member 25 on the support 23. The crank 24: is made considerably smaller than the crank 21 for purposes to be hereinafter set forth, and has secured to it a fixed pulley 26 and an idler pulley 27. The rod 16 extends through a partition 28 formed on the support 23 and through a guide block 29 which is formed with an oblong opening adapted to permit of an oscillatory vertical movement of the operating rod 16 and said guide block 29 is formed on its outer ends with openings 31 adapted for the reception of clamping rods 32 and 33, which rods are adjustably secured to the guide block by means of adjusting nuts 34:. A compression spring 35 is arranged around the operating rod 16 and confined between the guide block 29 and a second guide block 36 secured to the rear end of the table 8.
When motion is imparted to the drive pulley 26, and the crank 34 is at the limit of its upward stroke, the operating rod 16 is at the limit of its rearward stroke and said pulley is moved in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, the rear end of the operating rod 16 will be lowered a distance corresponding to the movement of the upper crank shaft 24 and said rod, with the table 8 moved forwardly at a gradually increasing rate of speed, the maximum of which is obtained when the connecting rod 19 occupies the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and when the connecting rod 19 obtains such position. it is reversed by the upward movement of the crank 24 with gradually de creasing speed, causing the table 8 to be quickly jerked backward and moved to its extreme rear position with gradually decreasing speed.
l/Vhen the table 8 is slowly started in its forward movement the material arranged thereon will be caused to slowly move over the rilfles, and as the speed of the table is increased to the maximum rate to be suddenly checked by a quickly turned movement of the table, the gangue or material is caused by the movement imparted to it to quickly slide over the rifiles. When it is desired to increase the tension of the compression spring 35 the same may .be accomplished by adjusting screws 34: on the rods 32 and 33, and when it is desired to adjust the relation or connection of the cranks 24 and 21 this may be quickly accomplished by screwing the connecting rod 19 on the bearing members or boxes 17 and 20.
When the ore or pulp has been placed on the table the heavier portion of said ore or pulp will be caused to settle by reason of the vibratory movement of the table on the bed of the same the lighter being caused to settle on the top thereof and consequently the heaviest ores will settle between the ritlles on the feed side and the lighter ores will settle between the remainingriiiies in the order of their fineness. Owing to the peculiar motion of the table the pulp is moved forward toward the front end of the discharge end and as the riflies are decreased in height toward the discharge end the water washing across the same tends to keep off the top gangue leaving the ore more exposed as it proceeds toward said discharge end. Should the pulp contain only a small amount of ore the samewill be more directly in line with the feed and near the feed side. If the pulp contains a large percentage of ore a portion of the same will climb over the successive andhigher rifiies and pass on to those which are high enough to stop its high'wash. This process'takes place in a more or less degree uponall of the pulp according to the amount of heavy ore contained thereon. By means of this improved motion the movement or vibration of the table may be varied by operatingthe threaded rod 19, to shorten the distance between'the upper and lower crank, this crank .is caused to move in an are over a plane somewhat vertical and the stroke of the table operating rod is shortened correspondingly. By operating the rod to lengthen the distance between the upper and the lower bearing boxes, the lower crank is lowered and caused to move in an are over a plane somewhat horizontal, thus lengthening the stroke of the table operating rod.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
In an ore concentrator, means for vibrating the concentrating table comprising a longitudinallyextending threaded pitnian adapted to be connected to the table, a crank arm, a U-shaped sectional bearing member mounted on said arm and having a threaded socket adapted to secure the end of said pitman, a second bearing member arranged on said crank arm between the arms of the U-shaped member and having a threaded socket therein, a second crank arm, a'bearing member thereon having a threaded socket,
means carried by the second crank arm for connecting the same with a power device, and a reversely threaded connecting arm adapted to screw into the sockets in the bearing members upon the two crank arms to provide an adjustable connection between the latter whereby change in the direction of the stroke of the first mentioned crank arm and pitman for varying the vibration of the table may be secured.
