Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 14, 1910. Serial No. 566,807.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILEY EDMONSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bicknell, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dies and has for its object the provision of a die to be employed for forming and sharp- I ening bits such as are employed with poweractuated drills in the mining of coal and the like.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification ;-Figure 1 is a detail perspective of the lower die member. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the upper die member. Fig. 3 is a sectional end view taken through the members when the latter bear one upon the other and showing a bit being operated upon.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The device is intended for use with drop presses, trip hammers and the like and when the bits are properly heated and properly positioned on the lower member, the upper member which is vertically movable and preferably carried by the plunger of the press or hammer is moved into engagement with the bit and press to shape, trim and sharpen the bit.
The lower member is designated in general by the numeral 5 and comprises an oblong metallic block the lower portion of which is, on its opposite sides provided with inclined grooves to be formed in a dovetailedtongue 6 to be received by a dovetailed slot on the bed of a press (not shown).
The upper face of the lower member 5 presents, in side elevation a stepped surface, the
lowest portion of which is designated by the numeral 8 and is perfectly plane and horizontal, with respect to the longitudinal center of the block and extends from one end thereof to a point adjacent the middle of the block. That portion of the upper face of the block at the inner end of the horizontal surface 8 is, at a point intermediate the inner end of the surface 8 and adjacent end of the block beveled, as shown at 9, this beveled surface extending upwardly from one side of the block to a point adjacent to the longitudinal center of the block, the portion beyond the inner end of the beveled surface 9 being designated by the numeral 10 and lying in a plane with the surface 8. The end portion of the block at the inner side of the beveled surface 9 rises to a point above the plane of the highest point of the beveled surface 9. Extending through an opening in the end portion 11 of the block is what will subsequently be termed an anvil 12. This member is substantially square in cross section and when so positioned as shown in the drawings its upper face will form a continuation of the beveled surface 9, and one of its sides 12 incline upwardly at obtuse angles to the surface 10 of the block, it being understood that the opening through which the anvil extends is located a trifle beyond the inner end of the beveled surface 9.
The upper die member is designated in general by the numeral 13 and corresponds in contour to the lower die member 5. Like the lower die member 5 the upper die member has its upper portion provided with a dove-tailed tongue 14 to be received by a dove-tailed groove in the plunger of the press (not shown). The lower or striking surface of the upper member 13 presents, in side elevation a stepped surface, one end portion of which is designated by the numeral 15. The opposite end surface of the lower face of the block is designated by the numeral 17, this end surface being plane and corresponding in area to the area of the end portion 8 of the lower block. Formed between the end portions 15 and 17 is a beveled surface 16 corresponding in length and width approximately to the beveled surface 9 and overlying the said beveled surface 9 so that when the surface 15 bears on the surface 11 a wedge-shaped opening will be presented between the beveled surfaces 9 and 16. The beveled surface 16 terminates in a depending extension 18, the inner side of which is beveled as shown at 19 to bear on the side 12 of the anvil, the lower face of the extension 18 being adapted to bear on the surface of the lower block.
WVith this construction it will be manifest scends to this position one edge of the anvil 10 will cooperate with an edge of that portion of the surface beyond the inner end of the beveledsurface 16 to form a shear so that an object extending beyond the said edge of the anvil will be trimmed.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
I claim A die comprising a lower member having on its upper face and between its opposite ends a beveled portion extending downwardly from a point adjacent to the longitudinal central line of one side of the member, and further provided with a recess extending laterally from the inner side of the beveled surface and opening through one side of the member, an anvil of rectangular cross section extending through said opening of the lower member and having one of its sides forming a continuation of the said beveled surface, and another side in clining upwardlyfrom the floor of the recess,an upper member having a portion of its lower face beveled similar to the beveled t WILEY EDMONSON.
