LUCIAN J'. HINE, 0F WINSTON SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, Y.ASSIGrNOR OF ONEJ-IAIJF T0 BENJAMIN F. WATKINS, OF WINSTON SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA.
SPIKE OR FASTENING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIAN J. I-IINE, a citlzen of the United States, residing at 'Vinston Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Spike or Fastening, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my invention is to produce a spike or fastening which when driven into wood or similar material will fasten and securely hold thereto a rail of iron or any other suitable material. This spike or fastening may be in the form of an ordinary railway spike at the head and neck and throat for tting against the sides of the rail laid on and to be securely fastened to the cr0ss-tie and to be spiked thereto or other object to be fastened together. The shank of .the spike is twisted and triangular in cross sect-ion, thus giving to the spike a continuous bond to the wood into which it is driven and being triangular in form and twisted presents a continuous lever which operates against the sides of the wood or other material into which it is driven, and thereby resists any effort to pull or jar the grip of the spike from the wood.
Figure l is a side elevation of the device and, Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the letter A designates an L-shaped stem having a twisted shank B of greater transverse diameter than said stem, the turns C and D of the shank being triangular in cross section to Specification of Letters Patent.

secure a wedging action, thus to reduce resistance to entrance in driving the same into an object, and the two turns of the shank terminating in an entering point E of helical form.
The shank is tapered from the handle to near the point and is then shaped into a pointed helical form. In addition to the tapering of the shank the same is formed substantially wedge-shaped in cross section with each corner of the wedge chamfered so as to obviate all parts which are liable to break, and to present a structure in which the resistance to removal is emphasized.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A spike having an L-shaped stem and a twisted shank, the turns of the shank being triangular in cross section from the stem to the point to secure resistance to extraction, and the turns of the shank terminating in an entering point of helical form.
2. A spike formed with a Stem and a shank, the shank being bent at right angles to the stem, and the shank formed substantially wedge-shaped in cross section from the stem to substantially the point, the shank being twisted from the stem to the point and formed so that the meeting edges at each corner are blunted.
