Description

Patented Mar. 28,.1911.
UNTT A T JARED S. SWEENY AND WILLIAM W. GRINDLE, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
FEED-WATER HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JARED S. SwnnNY and WILLIAM lV. GRINDLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Decatur, Macon county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Tater Heaters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in feed water heaters for steam boilers; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what we now consider our preferred embodiments from among other formations and arrangements within the spirit and scope of our invention.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction or in combinations and arrangements of elements as more fully and particularly set forth and pointed out. hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing shows the water heater in longitudinal section, the water and steam valves being shown in their normal open positions.
The heater comprises a shell or casing 2, formed with an internal imperforate or closed partition l, transversely dividing the interior of the easing into an upper or steam chamber 5, and a lower or water chamber 6. The steam pipe from the steam dome is suitably coupled to the heater casing through nipple 10, and discharges downwardly into steam chamber 5, through a vertical port in the roof of the chamber and surrounded at its lower end by annular valve seat 9. The shell is shown with a bottom valved feed water inlet opening having a nipple 7 fitted therein and formed for coupling to a feed water pipe from any suitable injector or pump adapted to deliver the feed water through the nipple at a higher pressure than that of the steam entering the steam port.
A vertically movable or gravity check valve 11, is arranged in the water chamber 6, to drop down on the seat 8, and thereby close the water inlet port. This valve can be formed with depending spaced guide wings slidable in the port. The valve is provided with a vertical guide and stop stem 12, extending upwardly therefrom and rigid therewith and adapted to engage the under face of the partition 4:, to limit upward movement of the valve. The partition is formed with a rigid depending guide 13, with which the stem 12 is in vertical or longitudinal sliding engagement and by which it is guided to movement in a vertical line.
, If so desired, the guide can be in the form of a depending annular cup or socket.
A vertically movable check valve 15, is arranged within the steam chamber 5, to close and open the steam inlet portand adapted to move upwardly and close against seat 9, to close said inlet port. This valve constantly tends to drop down to its normal position with the steam inlet port open, and the valve is guided in its vertical movement by spaced or separated wings 16, slidably arranged in said port. This valve is shown provided with a: vertical depending supporting or stop stem 17 adapted to engage and rest on the upper end of a fixed or rigid vertical stop post or stem 18, rigid with and rising from the partition 4.
c, is the feed water and heating pipe for delivering the feed water from the shell to the boiler at the feed water inlet opening into the boiler controlled by a boiler check of any suitable or approved type. This pipe is suitably fitted and secured (as by securing devices 19) to the side wall of the shell.
The transverse partition 4, is formed with a downward oifset into the water chamber 6, and opposite the receiving end pipe 0, thereby forming a vertical depending steam passage 20, from the steam chamber, and opening and discharging into steam nozzle 21, extending transversely through the casing wall and projecting centrally into and longitudinally of the water discharge pipe This nozzle 21 is contracted or tapered to its discharge end. Beneath the nozzle 21, the casing wall is formed with a contracted water discharge port 22, from the water chamber 6, into the lower portion of the re ceiving end of the pipe 0.
A water spraying, heating and forcing injector is arranged concentrically and longitudinally in the receiving end of the pipe 0, and intermediate its ends is secured therein by screw threads on the exterior thereof meshing with the internally threaded contracted portion 26, of the pipe 0. This inthis chamber.
jector consists of a combining cone 23, de livery cone 2%., and intermediate contracted cylindrical passage 25 from the contracted delivery end of the combining cone to the contracted receiving end of the delivery cone. 'lhe enlarged receiving end of the cone 23, fits snugly around the nozzle 21, so that said nozzle projects longitudinally into said cone in alinement With the cylindrical passage 9 3. The cone is of less diameter than the interior of the pipe 0, and hence a chamber 27, is formed in the pipe and around the cone, and the Water port from vvater chamber and dischargi into the inner end of The Water passes from. chamber 52?, into the cone 23, hrough an annular series of radial perfora ns 28, through the large end of said cone. 'l he steam nozzle Ql projects into the cone beyond the transverse plane of said series of perforations so that the radial jets of Water passing in through said perforations in'ipinge about radially against the exterior surface of said nozzle, and are hence reduced to spray and directed outwardly in the combining nozzle with the high speed steam jetfrom nozzle it, all as described in our pending application ii'o. %,903, filed June 28, 1909, and wherein is also illustrated an application of a heater to a, boiler, and this present invention relates to certain improvements in the heater of our said prior application.
The water in the injector is quickly raised to a very high temperature by the steam jet and the column of Water in the pipe 0, is driven forward at a high rate of speed by said steam jet to open the boiler check and thus deliver very highly heated feed water into the boiler. if for any reason, the boiler check should fail to open or the pipe 0, should otherwise become clogged, the Water Will back up in the injector and through the steam nozzle with great rapidity and at high pressure, and the speed of the back flow will be sufiicient to suddenly flip the valve 15, to its seat 9, and. thereby close the nipple 10, to prevent passage of the Water to the boiler dome. l i hen the boiler check is again restored to normal operation and the .flOW of Water through the injector toward the boiler is again restored, the pressure Will be reduced at the outer end of the emergency check valve 15 so that the steam pressure restores said valve to its normal open position and the steam jet from the nozzle, is again set up.
By the employment of a solid or l111131fforate partition 6, all danger of reduction of etiiciency caused by leakage of Water into the steam chamber and consequent condensation is avoided.
The invention is not limited to employment in connection with locomotive boilers, as it can be employed for feeding Water to stationary boilers, and a pump can be used for forcing the feed Water under the necessary high pressure to the heater, as Well as an injector.
It is evident that various changes and modifications n'iight be resorted to in the forms, constructions and arrangements described vwithout departing from the spirit and scope oi our invention and hence We do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact disclosure made hereby.
