Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1910. Serial No. 557,377
To cut whom it may concern:
it it known that I, )vTARlIN S. Hat-so, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at. Shelly, in the county of Norman, State of :llinneso'ta, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Screens; and I do n l. inexpensive screen that may be easily grain separator, and will elfectively remove wild oats and similar grains from th cleaned grain and will be so arranged relatively to the delivery worm that the latter will lvccp the perforations in the screen from being clogged.-
A further object is to provide a screen in which the sieve member may be detached from the body of the screen by the; removal of a single bolt.
With the above ends in view, the device consists of the novel construction and combination parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a fragmentary view in end elevation showing my imprtwed screen applied to a grain separator. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the screen showing the delivery worm therein. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the screen. Fig. -l cross sectional view taken on the line Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the screen member. Fig. (i is a perspective view of the separate bottom plate.
Like diameters of reference designate similar parts in the views shown.
The reference character 10 designates a side sill of a g ain separator upon which sill is uounted below the delivery worm of the.
mounted-a fanning mill 11 the throat of 'whiclLis in registration with a plurality of grain, as will be understood, isfreed' this trough is forming the subject matter of this invention.
i'atented Mar. 28,1911."
The delivery screen l-l consists of a pair of parallel side bars 15 and an arcuate bottom plate 16 the sides of which are. bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the lower faces oi the side liars 15 by bolts 17. Bolt openings 18 are formed in the side bars 15 to receive these bolts 17 which depend from the side sills 10 of the grain separator.
Formed in the arcuate bottom plate 16 is a longitudinal opening 20 which is stiflicient in size to extend to within a short dis ta nee of the bottom faces of the side bars 15 and to within a short distance of the ends of the said bars. This construction, it is ev'ident, forms an open bottom trough and in which closes the open bottom of the trough. The siei e member consists of an arcuate perforated plate 22 the sides and ends of which overlap the sides 16. The perfo any desired size and are preferably of sutti cient size to permit of the escape of wild oats and similar small grains from the grain disposed a sieve member 21 and ends of the bottom plate 'ations in this 'sievc are of being advanced lengthwise of the trough by y the doliveryworm 2.3, which latter, now be stated is secured to the side of the grain separator by means of hangers and is of sufficient size to with its periphery the inner walls of the sieve member 21. lVild oats as is well known have wisps or hairs which in ordinary screens cause said oats to work into the perforations and clog the latter. The periphery of the delivery worm engaging the sieve member in this case will by rotating against the wisps of wildoat grains which have become lodged in the sieve perforations, so twist and move the wisps as to cause the grain to eventually work through the perforations and drop clear of the screen.
For securing the sieve member in position, I employ a pair of angular strips 24 each formed from a single length of material it may sills 10 suitable engage having one side portion bent abruptly at.
as and thence directed in a plane parallel to the main body of as shown at 26. Through the substantially right angles to the strip, shown at substantially the strip,
main body of each strip are formed bolt openings 27 through which the shanks of the securing bolt 28 are passed. The free legs 26 of the strip are engaged over the adjacentlongitudinal edges of the sieve by the operator when it is desired toremove the sieve member. It is clear that when the bolt-is in position the sieve member is pre- Vented from longitudinal movement whereby the vibration of the grain separator can not displace the sieve from position, and
urther,--;the sieve may be readily, removed by simply removing the bolt.
In order that the device .may be simply used as a delivery trough, I provide" a separate bottom plate 32 which is arcuate in contour and is preferably identical in size ,Wlth the above-mentioned sieve member.
j The separator bottom plate may be inserted lengthwise of the bottom plate 16 and its side edges engaged beneath the outstanding free legs. of the before-mentionedclamping strips 24. An opening 33' is, disposed in the separate bottom 32-.and receives the bolt 29 when the separate bottom has reached its .final'position. i
It 1s clear that a delivery trough constructed as above described may be changed from an ordinary delivery trough-to a screen delivery trough with very little labor and in somuch as the securing bolt 28 is disposed within convenient reach of the operator,
with very little discomfort to the operator.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings, it is thought the construction an operation. of my invention will be easily understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appendedclaim. v Y
What is claimed is Y The combination with a grain separator side sills, deliveryboard, and delivery worm of a pair of approximately parallel cross bars spanning said sills and underlying the discharge end of said delivery board, an outwardly bowed plate having its longitudinal edges secured to the cross bars, and having a longitudinal opening extending in all directions nearly to the marginal edges of the plate, a screen housing said delivery worm and conforming to the inner contour of the plate, and further having its borders bearing upon the marginal portions of said plate, guide members carried upon the inner faces of said cross bars and having portions overlying and loosely engaging the marginal portions of said screen, said guide members being spaced "from and confronting the edge of said delivery worm, and a locking pin removably engaged through the over-lapping portions of the screen and plate.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN s. HAUGO.
