Be it known that we, PETER E.' KROEHLER and IVE-nNEn PETTEnsoN, Sr., citizens of the IInited States, residing at Naperville, in the county of Dnpage and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.v

This invention is an improvement in sofa beds, and relates more especially to a combination davenport and bed.

The primary object of the invention is the production of a device of this character of such construction that when arranged to form a sofa or davenport there will be nothing in its-appearance to indicate that 1t is convertible into a bed, and whenv arranged in the form of a bed a wide mattress is brought into position and firmly supported for use, while the upholstered seat of the davenport is turned down and located under the front part of the mattress so as to be protected during the use of the device as a bed.

With this principal object in view the invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts constituting the combination davenport and bed, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the -appended claims. In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a front elevation, the device being arranged in the form of a sofa or davenport. Fig. 2 is an end view, the near side .of the davenport being removed to disclose the parts by which the device is convertible into a bed. Fig. 3 is a similar View, with the upholstered seat of the davenport raised to show the operation of the several parts. Fig. 4 is a similar view, with the parts arranged in bed form,

In carryingout the invention we employ in the first place all the principal parts common to the usual form of davenport; that is to say, a frame consisting of the end pieces 5 and back 6, an upholstered seat 7, and a front "rail 8, the end pieces having front posts 9, and said end pieces and the back connected lby corner-posts 10, as is usual. In the present instance the seat and front rail, together with other parts hereinafter described, are movable within the frame for the purpose of convert-ing the davenport into a bed, and the several parts constituting the davenport may be of any suitable ornamental design'or finish.

The front rail 8 is pivoted at its-ends, near its upper edge, between the front posts 9 of the frame of the davenport,`such pivotal connection being formed preferably by means of short bars or metal straps 1l, securedto the ends of the railand having headed pivot-pins 12 which engage in keyhole-slots 13 formed in attaching-plates 14 secured to'theinner side of said front posts. The short bars ormetal straps 11 are eX- tended beyond the pivot for connection with the upholstered seat 7 at onefcorner thereof, this connection being by means of a pivot 15, so as to permit said upholstered seat to be swung into and out of the frame, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. Hingedly vconnected to the other end of each short bar orY metal strap 11 or directly'to the front rail 8, is a bar 16, which is pivotally connected at its rear end to the upper end of a lever 17, .the latter being pivoted at its lower end to a corner-post l0 of the frame. The pivotal connection between the lever 17 and bar 16 is by means of a bracket-plate 18, secured to the bar', so as to locate the pivotpoint a slight distance above the bar forthe proper action of a lifting spring 19, which is connected at oneend to the bar infront of said pivot-point and at its other end to the post 10 in the rear of and slightly above the horizontal plane of the lower pivotend of the lever.V Hooked plates 20 and 21 are provided for connecting the spring to t-he bar and post, respectively.

Connected to the upholstered seat 7, and to the movable bar 16 is a mattress frame comprising the opposite. end sections 22 and 23, and a short center section 24 the end` section 22 being connected by a llnk 25 to the bar 16, the center section connected to a standard 26 rising from one corner of the seat 7, and the other end section 23 connected by a link 27 to the other cornerI of v;

The sections or framcsy 22,23 and 24 are provided with suitable mattresses, and in the present instance the several sections are covered by a single piece mattress, so as to provide an unbroken surface when the device is arranged in bed form, as shown in For the purpose of supporting the outer ends of the mattress and seat, when the parts are arranged in bed form, we provide a supporting leg 28 at each end of the seat, said legsbeing pivoted -near theirupper ends to said seat, and connected each by a rod 29 to the metal straps at the ends of the front raill 8, the connection-of these parts being such that when the seat is swung outward the leg will assume a vertical position, to`

form the support, and when the seat is swung into the frame the said leg will assume substantially a horizontal -position so as to lie across the end of the seat below the upper edge thereof. For operating the pivoted seat a strap or loop 30 is attached to the inner edge thereof, as shown in Fig.` 3.

As will be lseen by reference to the drawings, the connections between the mattress sectionsand cooperating parts are such that when the seat 7 is in the osition within the frame to form a sofa or avenport (Figs. 1

and 2), said mattress sections will be folded below the seat, with the sections 22 and 23 lying horizontally one above the other, and

the center section 24 disposed vertically directly in the rear of the front rail 8, whereby said mattress, as well as the mechanical devices for operating and supporting the same, are entirely concealed, and the device thus forms a davenport with nothing' to in Y ing such operation the bar l16 is raised by the rearward movement of the frontlrail and the connection of said bar with the throwing-lever 17, thus elevating the rear section of the mattress and also the center and front sections, so that they will all be on a horizontal line.` In its raised position the mattress frame is firmly supported at its ends and center by means ofthe supporting links 25 and 27, .and standard 26, so that the device may form a substantial bed. When the device is closed in sofa or davenport form there is a space left between the superimposed end `sectlons of the'mattress, and'this space may be utilized for storing bed clothing during the use 'of the4 device as la sofa or davenport. It will be understood, of course, that similar connections between the mattress-frame, seat and sofa frame are located at each end of the device,

as is usual in devices of this character, and we prefer that the lifting-bars 16 be connected at their front and rear ends by means of cross-pieces; and also that the standards 26 which are rigidly secured td theseat be suitably braced, As each lifting-bar 16 is hinged to its companion short bar'or strap 11, which latter carries the seat and..front rail, said bars 16 and 11 together form a jointed bar for operating the rear mattress section and supporting leg as the seat is `swung into Iand out of the frame.

Having thus described 4our invention, what we claim as new and desire tol secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. In a convertible sofa and bed, the cornbination with the sofa frame and seat pivoted between the ends thereof, of a mattress frame comprising pivotally connected sections, standards connecting the center section to the pivot-end of the seat, andl means for connecting the outer sections to the underside of the seat and to the frame of the sofa respectively 2. In'a convertible sofa and bed, the combination with the sofa frame and seat, the latter being pivoted at its forward ends betweenV the end pieces of the frame, of a mattress frame comprising pivotally connected sections, standards connecting thel center section to the pivot-end of the seat, and movable links connecting the outer sections of the mattress frame to the underside of the seat and to the sofa frame respectively.- 4

3. In a convertible sofa and bed, the combination with the sofa frame, of a frontv rail pivoted between the ends thereof, a seat pivotedto the upper end of the front rail at one side of its pivot, a mattress frame comprising pivotally connected sections, and means for connectlng the mattress frame sections to the seat and to the front rail, the latter connection being at theother side of the pivot from the connectionI of the seat with said rail.,

4. In a, convertible sofa and bed, the combination with the sofa frame, of a front rail pivoted. between the ends thereof, a seat pivoted to the upper end of the front rail at one side of its plvot and adapted to swing into and out of the sofa frame, a mattress' 'frame comprising pivotally connected 'sections, movable members connecting one 'of the sections of the mattress .frame to the seat, movable members connecting the op osite section to the front rail at the other side ofthe lpivot from` the-connection of the seat with said rail, and a lifting lever'connected to the sofa frame and to one of the movable members last mentioned.
