Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed July 25, 1910. Serial No. 573,678.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK L. SHORT and ANDREW J. BIETE, citizens of the United Stat-es, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Packing and Shippingv Leaf-Tobacco; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art spraying which is commonly necessary 1nother apparatus used for this purpose.
The invention consists further of an apparatus of this nature so constructed that any quantity of tobacco may be taken from the receptacle and the lid replaced and held securely without in any way impairing the efliciency of the apparatus.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus showing the parts assembled. Fig. S2 is a cross sectional view showing the cam levers positioned for depressing the lid. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the locking means for holding the lid in its adjusted position, and Fig. et is an enlarged detail view of the cam lever.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a receptacle which may be of any size or shape and provided with a series of plates B secured to the inner faces of the ends of the receptacle and provided with series of apertures B for the reception of fastening bolts.
C is the follower or lid which is of such size as to snugly fit within the receptacle and D designate longitudinally movable sliding bolt-s which are held to the follower by means of the keepers E spaced apart. Said bolts are adapted to engage the apertures B in the plates B in the opposite ends of the receptacle. Upon the sides of the receptacle are the plates K having the slots K therein, the upper ends of which are contracted as shown.
A cam lever, designated by letter N, a detail of which is shown in F ig. 4f, has an antifriction roller N journaled in the forked end thereof and projecting from the side of the lever is a headed screw O adapted to engage the slots K in the plates K, while the anti-friction rollers engage the upper surface of the follower or lid.
After the tobacco leaves are placed within the receptacle and the lid upon the top thereof, the headed screws upon the levers are inserted in corresponding slots upon the same side of the box and the levers depress the follower against the leaves, after which the same operation may be repeated upon the opposite side by inserting'the headed screws in the slots and the other side of the follower brought down to a horizontal position and secured by the bolts.
What we claim to be new is In combination with a box for packing tobacco, plates secured to the opposite sides thereof and each plate provided with series of vertical slots, the upper end of each slot being contracted, a cam lever, an anti-friction roller journaled thereon, a headed screw fixed eccentrically to the cam lever, the head of the screw adapted to be inserted through the enlarged portion of the slot and the shank portion of the screw to engage the contracted portion and against the inner end of which contracted slot the screw is adapted to fulcrum as the lever is operated to cause the anti-friction roller to depress a follower.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afx our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
