To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. LYON, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handpieces for Dental Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand piece for dental engines and the like and in its generic nature the invention embodies an im' proved construction of hand piece adapted for usenot only in connection with flexible drive shafting but in connection with that type of dental engine employing an endless belt drive.
Primarily my invention consists in providing an outer casing adapted to, be secured to a bracket which in turn is adapted to be swivelly connected with the arm of a dental engine employing an endless belt drive, of the casing may be used without the bracket when a flexible drive shaft is used. Within the casing a bur holder and clamping member is provided and means are provided on the outside of the casing for controlling the member to grip or release the bur as conditions may require.
In its subordinate nature the invention embodies those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts all of which will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the ap pended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my im proved hand piece showing it applied to a dental engine of the endless belt type. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the application of the invention to a flexible shaft. Fig. 3, is a central vertical longitudinal section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a similar view of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6, are detail views of the swivel turntable and the connection with the arm of the dental engine.
WVhen my invention is to be used in connection with the dental engine of the endless belt type, I prefer to use it with such an engine of the type disclosed in the Doriot Patent, 503,740, of August 22, 1893, al though any other type of dental engine can be used, as the construction of the dental engine and the drive mechanism, per 86, forms no part of my present invention.
Referring now to the accompanying draw-' ings, in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 designates the casing which at its forward end is coned at l and is provided with the open end 1 through which the bur tool 50 may be inserted, the bur 50 may be of any approved type.
lVithin the casing 1 is disposed a revolving shaft 2 whose forward end is coned as at 2 and apertured as at 2 to permit passage of the shank of the bur tool 50, and within the shaft 2 is a clamp rod 3 whose forward end is formed with resilient fingers 3 that are adapted to fit the shank of the bur tool 50 when the clamp 3 is forced with its front end 3 into the cone end 2 of the shaft 2.
In order to force the end 3 of the rod clamp 3 into the cone portion 2 of the shaft 2 so as to grip the bur tool 50 I thread the rear end of the shaft 2 as at 2 to receive a nut at internally threaded to screw onto the end of the shaft 2, and provided with a bearing portion 4? to receive the end of the rod 3 so that when the nut 4: is screwed onto the shaft 2 the rod 8 will be forced forwardly to bring its front clamping portions 3 into the cone portion 2 of the shaft and cause the fingers of the rod clamp to tightly grip the bur tool 50 and hold it in place.
The shaft 2 is formed with a shoulder 2* to engage the nut 5 that is screwed into the end of the casing 1, and is provided with apertures 5 to receive a spanner wrench or other suitable implement whereby the nut 5 may be operated, in a manner well understood by reference to the drawings.
hen my invention is to be used on a continuous belt dental engine of the Doriot type, hereinbefore referred to, I provide a bracket 6 in which the casing 1 is held ant the bracket 6 has the horizontal portion 6 to form a bearing for the swivel belt guide 7 hereinafter again referred to. The shaft 2 is also provided with a grooved pulley 8 around which the endless drive belt 9 passes, the pulley 8 being secured to the shaft by a set screw 8*, as indicated in the drawings. The swivel belt guide 7 consists of a head '7 having a pair of upwardly projecting spaced bearing members 7 through which the shaft 7 passes, the shaft 7 being in the nature of a bolt and nut, if desired, and upon the shaft 7 c the grooved pulleys 7 -7 are mounted, the pulleys 7 having an outer flange 7 e of greater diameter than their inner flanges 7 as shown, to prevent the endless belt from running off the pulleys. .The end 10 of the arm 10 which connects with the dental engine is flattened and held between the upwardly projecting portions 7* of the belt guide 7 and is pivoted on the bolt or shaft 7. The guide 7 is held on the bracket portion 6 by a bolt 7 that passes through the head i and the bracket portion 6 and also passes through a plate 7 as shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings. Ball bearings 7" may be interposed between the head 7 a and the plate 7 if desired. The arm 10 may be provided with a clutch spring 10, as indicated, whereby the support rod 10" of the dental engine may be held to the arm 10, in a manner similar to that disclosed in the Doriot patent, hereinbefore referred to.
IVhen my invention is to be used with a flexible drive shaft then the pulley 8 and the bracket 6, with its attached parts, are omitted, as is also the nut a. In lieu of the nut t I provide a nut 40, shown more partic ularly in Figs. 2 and l of the drawings, the nut 40 being of the same construction as the nut t with the exception that the nut 40 has a rearwardly extended portion 40 and is provided with a reduced shank 40 to receive the connecting member ll of the drive shaft 41 the same being held in place by the nut member 40 that engages the connecting member ll of the flexible shafting 4L1. A jam nut 42 is provided on the threaded shank or rearward extension d0 of the nut 4:0, as shown in Fig. 4:, of the drawings.
To secure the bur tool or other similar tool 50 in the hand piece the nut member 4, or 40, as the case may be is loosened to withdraw the fingers 3 of the clamping rod 3 from the cone portion 2 of the shaft, after which the bur tool is inserted and the nut 4c screwed on to force the fingers 8 back into the cone portion of the shaft to cause them to come together and clamp the shank of the bur. To release the bur tool it is only necessary to reverse the foregoing operation.
When my hand piece, is to be used with a flexible drive shaft it is advisable to secure a nut or milled member 43 on the shaft 2 by a set screw 43- or in any other approved manner, so that the shaft 2 can be held from rotation while the nut 40 is being screwed up.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought the complete construction operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a hand piece for dental engines, an outer casing formed of a single member, a hollow shaft rotatably mounted within said casing and having an enlarged portion, a plug fitted into said casing to abut said enlarged portion, said shaft projecting through said plug, means on said shaft outside of said casing for cooperating with said enlarged portion to prevent longitudinal movement of said shaft, said shaft and said casing each having a long tapered or cone shaped. end, the cone shaped end of the casing extending beyond that of the shaft, a rod wholly mounted within said hollow shaft and having integrally formed resilient fingers at one end and having a bore to receive a bur tool, a threaded cap screwed onto the projecting end of said shaft to engage said rod to force it with its fingers toward the cone shaped end of said shaft to cause said fingers to engage the walls of said cone shaped end of said shaft to grip said bur tool, said projecting cone end of said casing having an aperture to permit passage of the bur tool,
substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
2. In a dental engine, a hand piece, a bracket supporting the same, said hand piece having a rotatable shaft, a pulley secured to said rotatable shaft, a swiveled head secured to said bracket, a plurality of pulleys mounted on said swiveled head, all of said pulleys adapted to receive an endless belt and a supporting rod pivotally connected to said head, substantially as shown and described.
