TUBE-CLEANING TOOL.
Application filed February 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PHILIP J. DARLING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tube-Cleaning Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tube cleaning tools of the class employed in cleaning the inside of tubes by rapidly rotating the tool.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view partly in section. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a plan View partly in section of one of the swing frames with one of the cutter bolts in place. Fig. 5 is an end view of the swing frame and cutter bolt of Fig. l.
The frame l has a central stem 5, front radial arms 6, rear radial arms 7, a central rearwardly projecting cylindrical hub 8 with internal screw thread 9 for attachment of a rotating means and a forwardly pro jecting cylindrical hub 10 into which a forwardly projecting cylindrical rod 11 is removably held by cross pin 12 which is normally held in place by bending over the ends as shown. Arms 6 and 7 are arranged in pairs, a front arm 6 directly in front of and in line with a rear arm 7 having a longitudinal hole 13 near its outer end, in line with a hole 14: in arm 7.
Between each pair of arms 6 and 7 a frame or yoke 15 swings on a longitudinal hinge pin 16 which is supported near its ends in holes 13 and H. Frame 15 has a front arm 17 at its front end and a rear arm 18 at its rear end, both of said arms projecting transversely.
A longitudinal bolt 19 passes through the hole 20 in the end of front arm 17 and screws through the threaded hole 21 in the rear arm 18 until a tapered portion 22 of bolt 19 is seated in a tapered counterbore 23 formed in the forward face of the rear arm 18.
The cutter bolt 19 projects forwardly from frame 15 and is formed with a hexagonal head 24:. A tapered cutter 25 is rotatably mounted on bolt 19 in front of frame 15. Cylindrical cutters 26 are rotatably mounted on bolt 19 between the arms of the frame. Cutters 25 and 26 are formed with cutting teeth extending preferably in a cli- Specification of Letters Fatent.

A. removable ring 27, mounted on hub 8, has a forwardly projecting flange 29 extending over a rearii'ardly projecting end 30 of cutter bolt 19 and internally formed with an eccentric cylindrical cam surface 31, against which the projecting end 30 of bolt 19 abuts to limit the outward swing of frame 15. Ring 27 is rotatably adjustable on hub 8 to bring different parts of cam surface 31 into position to stop and limit the movement of bolt 19, whereby the limit or outward swing of the frame, the. bolt and the cutters may be adjusted, allowing the cutters to bore to different diameters.
Ring 27 may be secured in either of several angular positions by a rearwardly eX tending portion 32 Fig. 1 of hinge pin 16 which extends into either of several holes 33 Fig. 2 in ring 27. Ring 27 has an internal flange 3% overlying and bearing against the rear end of hub 8. A stop lug on the frame 15 extends oppositely from arm 18 and stops against stem 5 to prevent frame 15 turning clear over or reversing when ring 27 is not in position to limit it. Stem 5 has concave surfaces e1 formed for a part of its length, into which the cutters 26 may drop in their closed position. Arms 17 and 18 have concave surfaces 35 which stop upon the cylindrical portion 36 of the stem 5 in the closed position.
Flange 29 has openings 37 which are wider than the diameter of the end 30 of cutter bolt 19 so that in one angular position of ring 27 the ends of the cutter bolts will pass through opening 37 and its travel outward will then be unlimited by the ring 27.
In operation, the tool is rapidly rotated in and slowly advanced through the tube being cleaned. The centrifugal force of rotation swings the cutter bolts and cutters outward toward the surface of the tube until the outward movement is arrested by the internal cam surface of the ring, which may be adjusted and secured in any of several positions to allow the cutters to move to a desired diameter for any size of tube or to compensate for wear of the cutters.
In cleaning tubes made of material which cannot be injured by the cutters the ring may be located in an angular position to alinvention at each end, a frame pivoted between sail arms and also having arms at each end. a cu er bolt passing through the ends of rue arms o t the frame, a rotary cutter mounted on said cutter bolt between the arms of the frame and a member having an internal cam extending over the end of the cutter bolt to adjustably limit its outward movement.
A tube cleaning tool having a rotatory axial stem carrying an outwardly extending arm near each end, a yoke pivoted to and having its ends arranged to swing outwardly between said arms, an arbor carried by the swinging yoke ends, a cutter mounted on said arbor, and a flanged disk mounted on the stem, the flange of said disk being adapted to be engaged by said arbor for limiting the outward swing of the free ends of the yoke which carry the arbor and cutter.

A tube cleaning tool having a rotatory axial stem carrying an outwardly extending arm near each end, a yoke pivoted to and having its ends arranged to swing outwardly between said arms, an arbor carried by the swinging yoke ends, a cutter mounted on said arbor, and a disk with a forwarely extending flange provided with an opening and adjustably mounted on the stem, said flange when the disk is in one position bein g adapted to be en -aged by said arbor for imiting outward swing of the free ends =3 the yoke which carry the arbor and cut- (81', and when the disk is in another position permitting the tree outward swing of said parts.
