ABRAHAM L. CHAMPION, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
LAWN-TRIMMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LABRAHAM L. CHAMPION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn- Trimmers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lawn trimmers and has for its object to provide a machine of this character which will be simple, compact, and durable in construction, and which will possess many advantages over similar devices in present use.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lawn trimmer embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a plan view partly broken away; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig.
2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the base plate removed; Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sect-ion through the bearing for the rotary cutter; Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 66 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section on the line 77 of Fig. 4c; and Fig. 8 is a detail section on the line 88 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and therefore not drawn to a scale, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the'opposite side members of the machine which are preferably cast or otherwise suitably formed of the desired shape. Suitable handles for operating the machine may be secured to the side members, one of said handles being shown in the drawings. One of the side members, as 1, is provided in its outer face with a main recess 3, in which the drive gear 4 is mounted, and the smaller communicating recess 5, in which are arranged the gear wheels 6 and 7 The drive gear 4 is arranged upon the inner squared end 8 of the drive shaft 8 which at its opposite end is preferably cylindrical, as indicated at 9, to allow the drive wheel 10 to freely revolve thereon. The inner face of the hub 11 of the drive gear is preferably provided with ratchet teeth 12 and suitably Specification of Letters Patent.

mounted in the hub portion of the drive wheel is a spring-pressed pawl 1 L extending through the aperture 15 in said hub and adapted to normally engage the ratchet teeth 12 of the drive gear to thereby lock the drive wheel 10 and drive gear 4 to rotate together in a forward direction, but to automatically uncouple the two driving members when the drive wheel 10 is rotated in the reverse direction. The outer end of the drive shaft is preferably reduced, as at 8", and suitable securing means, as the key 8, is inserted through said reduced end. The drive gear 4 intermeshes with the gear wheel 6 which in turn meshes with the gear wheel 7, whereby motion is imparted to the knife operating shaft 16 on the end of which the gear '7 is fixed. The shaft 16 extends through and is revolubly mounted in the horizontal tubular bearing 17 which is preferably cast upon the inner face of the side member 1. The other end of the shaft 16 is provided with a squared portion, as 18, to receive one of the knife carrying disks 19, which are preferably mounted to rotate around the bearing 17, annular flanges 20 having ballreceiving grooves 21 in their outer faces being suitably securedupon said bearing. The knife carrying disks 19 are provided with annular bearing shoulders 22 which cooperate with the flanges 20 to provide ball races for the bearing balls 23, whereby friction between the bearing flanges 20 and the knife carrying disks is elimi nated. The cutting blades 24 are arranged between the disks 19 in the usual manner.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that as the drive wheel 10 is rotated, power is communicated through the intermediate mechanism to the gear 7 whereby the cutting knives 24 are rotated to out the grass or similar growth against the horizontally disposed stationary cutting knife or blade 25 which is pivotally mounted directly in rear of the rotary cutting knives and is held in its adjusted position by the adjusting screws 26, which are threaded through the bearings 27 on the side member 1 and engage against the extension 28 of said knife.
A bearing roller 29 designed to run upon the grass is mounted in the adjustable bearings 30 arranged for vertical adjustment in grooves 31 in the inner faces of the exten sions 32 of the side members of the machine.
An adjustable cutting blade 33 having a sharp cutting edge is pivotally mounted upon the outer face of the side member 2 and is adjustable to project to any desired plane, preferably extending a short distance below the periphery of the drive wheel 10. Any suitable adjusting means, as the slot 34: and screw 35, may be provided for adjusting the cutting blade 83. This cutting blade is for the purpose of trimming the edges of lawns and to sever crab grass which runs close to the ground surface and escapes the cutting blades 24.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the .form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The lawn trimmer herein described and shown comprising rigidly connected members, one of said members having a circular recess in its outer side in its upper portion and a smaller elongated recess below and communicating with said circular recess, a bearing sleeve formed integral with and projecting laterally from the inner side of said member and having spaced annular flanges, an axle journaled in said side member at the center of the circular recess and projecting laterally through and outwardly beyond said recess, a drive wheel mounted loosely on the outer end of said axle, a drive gear fixed on the axle Within the circular recess, means to operatively connect the drive wheel and the drive gear, a forward pinion mounted in the smaller recess and meshing with the drive gear, a shaft extending through the bearing sleeve and having the outer end projecting through. the rear end of said recess, a pinion rigid with said end of said shaft and meshing with the. forward pinion, a knife carrying disk secured to the opposite end of said shaft and having an annular shoulder overlying and running on the adjacent flange of the bearingsleeve, a second knife carrying disk mounted loosely on the bearing sleeve and having an annular shoulder overlying and running on the adjacent flange of said sleeve, and knives secured to and extending between said disks.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
