T o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, J AMES F. FERRY, residing at Delta, in the county of Delta and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Hydrants, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water hydrants, and it particularly has for its object to provide a hydrant of a simple and effective construction wherein means are provided for preventing water waste from going into the ground when the hydrant valve is shut off and to deliver the water that would otherwise drip from the outlet spout through such spout after the hydrant valve is cut oft' as a part of the regular stream.
The invention also has for its object to provide a hydrant in which waste water or surface drainage will not get into the hydrant to contaminate the water therein, and the invention also has for its object to provide a hydrant in which freezing of the water will be prevented.
Generically the invention comprises a main rotary valve preferably of the type disclosed in my Patent #936,877 of October 12, 1909, to the casing of which valve an inner casing is jointed and to which valve casing a reducing joint is secured which connects with the source of water supply. The inner casing incloses `a water pipe which interlocks with the rotary valve which when turned causes the rotary valve to open or close, the water pipe being spaced from the walls of the inner casing and projected through the top thereof where it carries an outlet spout or faucet. Within the water pipe is another pipe that extends down to near the rotary valve and has its upper end projected through the top of the water pipe and joined to an air reservoir or compression chamber. An outer casing is threaded into the reducing joint and incloses the inner casing so that the inner casing, the valve and its contained parts may be removed for repairs if necessary.
More specifically the invention resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a sectional perspective view illustrating the application of my invention, the rotary valve being open. Fig. 2, is an Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like letters and numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, 13 designates the rotary valve whose casing 10X is externally threaded at 10a to receive the union 2X, the union 2X screwing onto the tapped end 1a of the inner casing 1. The other end of the casing 1 is closed by a cap 3 in any approved manner. Threaded ont-o the valve casing 10X below the union 2X is a reducing joint 4X whose reduced end 5x joins with the supply main 6.
7 designates the water pipe which projects through the cap 3 and has its upper end secured at 8 to the air reservoir 9. The air reservoir is connected with a pipe 9 that projects down into the water pipe 7 and is spaced therefrom and terminates adjacent to the valve casing 10X. The pipe 7 has an outlet 7a to which a faucet 7b (see Fig. 1) or a simple spout 7c (see Fig. 7 may be attached. The pipe 7 has a collar 7 d within the casing 1 near its top to take off the wea-r on the cap.
The valve mechanism may be of essentially the same construction as disclosed in my patent hereinbefore referred to as heretofore stated, and in its generic nature comprises the casing 10x which has a reduced lower end 10d on which the cap plate 11 is threaded, the cap plate 11 having apertures 11a to register with the apertures 12a in the web 13a of the rotary valve 13. The pipe 7 has its lower end reduced as at 7e to snugly fit within the valve 13 and it is provided with lugs 7 that enter the longitudinal slots 13b of the valve 13. Y In the practical operation of my invention when a faucet 7b is used, the rotary valve may be left open, as shown 1n Fig. l of the drawings, andthewater turned on or off through 'the faucet 7 b. When, however, a simple spout 7Cis used, as shown in Fig. 7 of thedrawings, theywater is'turned on or oli' by rotating the pipe 7', therebyopeningV4 or closing. the rotary valve in a manner readily understood by those skilledin the art.
When the rotary'valve is open and water` is Vflowing through the outlet spout 7c or faucet 7b, the air within the chamber 9 and pipe 'y 9a will bek compressed so that as soon j as the rotary valve is closed this compressed air will force the .water out of the spout7c or openfaucetV 7b toA asuflicientdegree to prevent dripping of the water at the outlet spout, but should the lwater within the hydrant get vchilledbelow `the freezing point and expand, it willbacl up into thev pipe 9=L and bursting of the pipes will be avoided.
In order that the valvemechanism may readily removed for repairs or cleaning iflnecessary, I* inclose the inner casing 1' and `the valve casing 10X- inV an outercasing lOOVwhose lower end threads Ainto a counterbore ly of the .reducing joint ,4X andwhose upper end is flanged'at 100a to be secured to the flange ly of the casing l bythe screws lZ that'screwthe cap 3 in place. When it is desired to remove the valve mechanism it is only necessary to'remove the screws 1z and turn the casing l to unscrewl the valve casing l0X fromfthe web lzV of the reducing joint llxvfrwhen thefentire structure within Vthe casing 100 may beremoved.4 The casing 100 further serves as a wall to prevent the earth and moisture entering the hydrant.

From the foregoing-description taken in connection with the accompanying 'drawings, it isthought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the artk to which 'the invention appernism whereby ywhen said pipe is turned said valve will be opened or osed according as said pipe is turned one way or the other, an` outlet tosad ypipe and an air compression chamber in communication with said pipe adjacent to said rotary valve.

In a hydrant, a source of water supply, a rotary valve mechanism including a valve casing and a rotary valve within the same, a joint connected to said source of supply and to said valve casing, said valve mechanism controlling passage of water through said joint, a water off-take pipe having one end interlocked with said rotary valve in virtue of which said valve may be opened or closed according as said pipe is turned one way or the other, an outlet for said water pipe'k near its other end, an air duct projected within said water pipe and in communication therewith near its lower end, an air reservoir carried by said duct above said water oii-take pipe and in communication with said duct, a casing for said water off-take pipe having its lower end secured in said valve casing, and a second casing secured to said joint and projected upwardly to inclose said casing that incloses said water off-take pipe.
