Description
O 0.1VIUSSELMAN. COMBINED PRESS FOR CHEESE, '&c.
Patented Jan. 11, 1870.
CHRISTIAN o. MUSSELMAN, or SOMERSET, PENNSYLVANIA..
Letters 1 mm N 98,7(l2,'datcd January 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT COMBINED PRESS I'OR CHEESE. &e.
The Schedule-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN C. MUSSELMAN, of
Somerset, in the county ofSomerset, and State ofPenn- I sylva nia, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Combined Press for Cheese and other articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being bad to'the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the said press, and Figure 2 is an end view, showing the winch, and mechanism for operating the pre'ss-lever.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. In Letters Patent granted tome, May 21, 1867, No. 64,998, the plattbrm a, supported by the legs b, the standard 0, lever 11, cheese-press ring k, perforated casingm, plunger n, sausage-stutter o, andplungerp are shown substantially the same as in my present in-, vention.
In this machine, however, there was 'no means for raising the lever (1; it had to be lifted by hand.
The nature of my presentinvention consists in an .arrangenu-nt of pulleys and cords, combined with the lever 11, and a two-part winch-barrel, so that the moving end of the lever can be drawn down with great power by rotating the winch-barrel in one direction, or said lever will he lifted by turning the winch 'the other way.
My present invention is, therefore, ail-improvement upon that set forth in aforesaid patent, and increases thecapacity of the same, and the facility with which theprcss can be used, because the lever will be held up by-the winch and cords while the press is being charged, and the plunger can be drawn up by the ,winch with case, although it might be wedged within the press, or adhere to the material operated upon.
A specia-l'r'etercnce being made to the patent before mentioned, no further description --of the press, its mode of construction or operation, is herein required. 1, however, remark that the sausage-stuifer is provided with the tube 0', for the escape of air, and is attached by a tenon through the bed (1-. e
At the upper, end of the standard e, I introduce a I roller or pulley, r, over which the rope or cord 3 passes. r e
- One end of this cord s is attached to the lever (l, as at 2; ,the.other end is passed around and attached to the smaller portion t, of the two-part winch-barrel.
The other rope or cord u is attached at one end to the larger portion n, of the two-part winch-barrel,
passes up over the moving pulley w, (th at is, at the end of the lever (1,) and thence descends to the point of attachment at the bed a.
I have shown this rope as passing to -the spring 5, that yields slightly in case of inequality in thewinding or unwinding of the ropes or cords n and s.
The-crank g is employed to actuate the two-part winch-barrel, and the pawl 6 retains the barrel and lever, when the latter is drawn down by revolving the barrel in the direction of the arrow, fig. 1.
When the pawl 6 is relieved, the reverse movement of the crank g and winch barrel elevates the lever d,
and draws the plunger up.
This press is adapted to a variety of domestic purposes, such as the pressing of cheese in the ring k, the making of cider or wine, or the expressing of other liquids from materials placed in the perforated casing m, or the pressing of lard or meat-scrap; also, in the stufiing of sausages, this press is especially available, as the air escapes back through the tube 0'.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-.
cut, is-- The arrangement of the winch-barrel t v, cords or ropes s u, and pulleys 'r to, combined with the spring 5 and press-lever d that acts upon'the plungers, as
' and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 26th day of J one, A. D. 1869.
' '0. O. MUSSELMAN.
Witnesses:
ROBERT LAUGHTON, DENNIS F. WALKER.
