TWO-PART BOTTLE.

To all whom it may concern:

llc it known that l, EDWARD N. BacrrUNo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Two-Part Bottle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiou.

My invention relates to two-part bottles, my more particular purpose being to provide a bottle made in halves, which are detachably connected together by aid of a spring strap and are easily taken apart in order to be cleaned.

More particularly stated, my invention comprehends a bottle made in halves, one of which is provided with a tongue and the opposite one with a groove into which said tongue fits, the two halves being provided with grooves and being connected together by a strap of spring metal practically encircling the entire bottle and resting in the groove, the strap having a clasp for detachably connecting its ends together.

The bottle comprises two halves 5, 6, each provided with a groove 7 extending directly down its outer face and merging into an opening 8. The two halves 5, (i are each respectively provided with a semi-neck 9, 10. The two halves are accurately fitted together, and to this end the half 5 is provided with a tongue 11 having a substantial V-shape in cross section. The half 6 is provided with a groove 12, substantially V shaped in cross section and adapted to receive the V-shaped tongue 11 of the half 5. The tongue so fits into the groove as to form therewith a water-tight joint. larly provided with a continuation 1 1 of the groove 12. The neck, as well as the body of the bottle, is thus formed in halves, which are integral with the respective halves 5 and 6 of the bottle.

A strap of spring metal, preferably aluminum or brass, is made in two

15, 16 are curved inwardly, as indicated at the bottom of Fig. 2, but do not close tightly against the under side of the body portion of the bottle; that is to say, the ends 18. 19, while curved under the body portion of the bottle, are not so sharply curved as to bear upwardly against; the body portion, and because of their shape they are held slightly away from the bottom of the bottle. The end 15) terminates in ahinge member 20, the end '19 being provided with a hook 21.

By aid of a pivot pin 22, a clasp 23 is journaled upon the hinge member 20 and is Free to swing upon the pivot pin 22 as a center. The outer or free end oi the clasp 23 is pro vided with a hook 24, which is adapted to engage the hook 21, thereby locking the clasp firmly in position. Tn order to secure the clasp, however, it is necessary to press the

18, 15.) toward each other and slightly upward, in order that the hook 2 1 may snap into proper locking position relatively to the hook 21. When thus secured, the strap of spring metal and the clasp 23 together exert a gentle spring pressure upon opposite sides of the body portion of the bottle, so as to hold the two halves thereof firmly together. The advantages of such a pressure for the purpose of preventing leakage of a liquid through a joint, are well known.

The two-part bottle above described is of particular service as a canteen, to be used by soldiers, engineers, travelers. and all other persons who, for any reason, find it necessary to carry a bottle of water or other liquid with them for long distances or in isolated places.

Tn order to clean the bottle, the operator merely forces the clasp 2?) downward, so as to disengage the hook 24 from the hook 21, and then takes off the annular portion 17 from the neck of the bottle. This allows the two halves of the bottle to be separated, after which they may be scalded internally,

rubbed with sand, or otherwise cleaned as desired.

In order to re-assemble the two parts, the two halves are placed together, the strap brought around them, as shown in Fig. 2, the annular portion 17 encircling the neck of the bottle, and the clasp 23 forced into its normal position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle made in halves, each of said halves being comparatively fiat and provided with a semi-neck, the two halves, fitting together and the semi-necks fitting together so as to form a receptacle having generally the form of a flat flask, a strap of spring metal encircling said halves and provided with an annular portion encircling the semi-necks, said strap of spring metal extending in a general direction cross ing the general plane of said flat flask and provided with resilient portions normally standing slightly outward from the adjacent surfaces of said bottle but adapted to be sprung toward each other so as to exert spring tension in a direction crossing the general plane of the flask, and a fastening mounted upon one of said resilient portions and provided with means for engaging the other resilient portion.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle made in halves, each half being provided with a semi-neck and with an opening opposite said semineck, the two halves fitting together and the semi-necks fitting together, a strap of spring metal encircling both of said halves and provided with an annular portion encircling said semi-necks, said strap of spring metal being provided with resilient portions extending through the openings in said halves, but normally standing slightly outward from the adjacent surfaces of said halves but adapted to be sprung toward each other so as to exert spring tension upon said halves, said resilient portions lying in a plane crossing the joint between said halves, and a fastening mounted upon one of said resilient portions and provided with means for engaging the other of said resilient portions.
