In Fig. 4 I have shown a ratchet wheel '20- as having its teeth meshing directly otherwise the two devices are identical, the operation being the'samein both instances. For example, assuming. that'it is desired to raise the head---l6 to lift a portion of a vehicle, the pawl 33-- is turned to the position shown in the drawings with the pin 35 projecting laterally through the otf-- set slotted portion -32- to the right of the lever, so as to bring the beveled engaging end of the pawl to' the top thereby permitting the pawl to rideover the edge of the teeth as the lever is raised without efi'ecting the operation of the ratchet wheel. When the lever.is depressed, however, the lower fiat face of the pawl engages and operates the ratchet wheel 20 and its correspond- 'ing gear -2lin the direction indicated by arrow a:, in Fig. 1, and impartsrotary motion to thegear -'12 and tubular screw -6 in the direction indicated by arrow 3 Fig. 3, thereby screwing both screws upwardly.
