Application tiled. March 6, 1907. Serial No. 860,820.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN DINGS, a citizen or' the United States, residing at Milwaukee, countyof Milwaukee, and State of Wisconments in Magnetic Separatore, of which the following is a specification. n
My invention relates to improvements in electromagnetic separators of that class in which the material is conveyed through a magnetic zone by a non-magnetic conveyer and the magnetite removed from the conveyer by the direct attraction of moving. auxiliary pole ieces.-
- The object o .this invention is to provide a uniform magnetic zone, and regulate the intensity thereof, also to provide plural zones of dierent intensity.
A. further object is to provide means for supporting and energizing the auxiliary pole In the following description reference is' had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a magnetic separator embodying my invention? Fig. 2 is .a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a modified form oi' auxiliary pole piece comprising a continuous ring. Fig. 4 is a vertical central sectional view 'drawn longitudinally of the conveyerV belt. The electromagnet coils 1 A'are four in number and are grouped in pairs with the mem# bers of each pair on opposite sides of the horizontally disposed belt 2, which belt s'erves as` a conveyer for the material.` The coils composing a. pair are wound in the same direction and connected at the top by4 a pole piece 3 which is provided with core posts 4 which extend downwardly through the magnet coils and rest upon a bed 5. mounted of adjusting screw rods 7 which have swiveled connection with the upper pole. piece between the coils, thescrew :rods 7 having a collar 9 bearing against the undersurface of the'pole piece 3 and ahead 10 beat-'ing upon the, upper surface of such poleplec. The rod has screw threaded engagement with the lower pole piece 6 so that by turning the rod this pole piece'may be raised or lowered. The conveyer belt 2 extends horizontally between the pole pieces and with one of the adjusting screws 7 on each sideof the belt between such belt and the electromagnet coil 1. The upper pole piece is provide between the magnet coils with a downwardly extending segmental member 12, having a segmental channel 13 therein and the lower pole piece'is provided with an upwardly lextending member 14, the latter being in close proximity to the belt when this pole piece is raised as shown in the drawings. Theother pair of electromagnet coils is provided with similar pole pieces faced li the oppositel direction, z'. e., the segmental membersl l2 Vand 14 of the respective u per and lower pole pieces are faced towar each other and a cap piece 16 of non-magnetic material resting upon the ole-pieces 3 is provided with a bearing 17 or the shaft 18 which extendsdownwardly through the bearing and isprovidedat its lower end with a wheel shaped carrier 1,9 to which an annular series of auxiliary pole pieces 20 are secured ina position to pass successively through segmental chan# nels 13 of both of the pole'pieces 3 when-the carrier is rotated. The auxiliary pole pieces are formed of magnetizable material and are secured to the non-magnetic carrier by any suitable means, vsuch as bolts 23. AAt their lower ends the auxiliary pole pieces have converging outer and inner surfaces 24, whereby the lower ends of the pole pieces assume the form-of' a blunt wedge having a curved edge corresponding with.4 the curvatureof the channels 13 of the pole pieces and the line of rotation of the auxiliary pole pieces. The object of thus tapering the lower ends o these pole'pieces is to concentrate the magnetic lines of force in a narrow but intense magnetic field. The objectv of providing the segmental channel 13l is to increase the area of magnetic iiux to the auxiliaryv pole pieces, which are thus made to ioo pass in close proximity to a plurality of' I magnetic surfaces.
.from any suitable source of power and the In operation they shaft 18 with the carrier 19' and auxiliaryfpole pieces are rotated v on across the magneticiield of. the lirst set l .pole pieces at ltwo points.
conveyer belt 2 is caused'to travel longitudinally, thus conveying the material thereof magnets and then across the magnetic field of the second set, thus exposing the magnetite to the attraction ofthe auxiliary L It will be understood that; the magnetite will be lifted from the conveyerby the attraction, of the pole pieces 20 and will `be discharged vfroml such polepieces in the neutral zone when passing from one set of magnets to the next. By means of the screw rods 7, the. intensity of the magnetic eld may not only be varied by ,raising and lowering the pole pieces -6 but it is also possible to have, magnetic iields of dierent intensity by adjusting the pole pieces 6 of one set of magnets'at` a lower level or at a greater distance from the conveyer 2 than the pole piece (i of the other set of magnets.
In order -that the adjustment may be transversely uniform oi' equal for'both'magnets of a set the screw rods 7 are provided near their upper ends with sprocket-wheels 27 around which a sprocket chain 28 extends and connects the'rods on opposite sides of the conveyer 2', One of the rods is provided with a hand wheel 29 by turning which both rods of the set will be simultaneously actuated and the lower pole piece 6 uniformly adjusted at both ends. j
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated an auxiliary pole piece comprising a continuous ring 30 which is substituted for the series of pole pieces 20, shown in the other views. The ring is mounted upon the carrier 19 in the same manner as the pole pieces 2O.l If the ring l auxiliary pole is used a brush 3l is preferably employed in the neutral'zone to remove the magnetite which would otherwise adhere through residual magnetism. The magnets of the second. set are however preferably wound in the opposite direction .from those of the first set, whereby the corresponding pole pieces of the sets will be of opposite polarit .In- Fig. 6 I have illustrated the form of construction in which a carrier40 of nonmagnetic material is employed'to convey the magnetite fromthe belt. In this case the carrier comprises a plane disk without pieces, the disk being'arranged to extend `between the upper pole piece and the belt, whereby the magnetite th will be drawn by the direct attraction of the upper polar rojection 12a against the under surface of tie. carrier and retained in such position until it passes out of the magnetic' field when it will bepermitted to drop at the side of the belt. j Having thus described my invention what I claim as new aiiddesire to secure by.
