Britain, residing at 7 Gladstone the county of York, En land, late of l3 Blenheim Terrace, Rooms 'ane, Morley, in the county of York, England, have invented .certain new and useful" Improvements in Ganzes of Miners Safety-Linups', of which the followingr is' a specification.
It is nusual to provide a n iiiiers safet lamp with what is termed a gauze, whic i is really a deep cap or cone of gauze web o1' the like. The object of .this gauze being to prevent flame inside the lamp from communicating with .and igniting gas or other eX losive mixture outside the lamp. To shiel the said gauze from the'eti'ects of strong air currents and to save it from 'external damage, it is customary to proshield, or bonnet. Now to construct the said web or the like into thc forni of a cylinder, joining the two butting edges by means of a vertical fold or seaiii,7tlie upper vopening of the` saidgeyliiider being closed by a piece of. gauze web or the like secured by means of a circular fold or seam: metal flanged rings are then attached by meansvof punch marks, rivets. or the like to the lbwer or other o en end of the said gauze cylinder. Tlie said flanged rings are rovided for the purpose-of securing the who e to the lamp frame or glass. Now. it hasV been ict-mnd in practice that 'any or all of these"a iolds, scams, or joints are a' t to be broken or burst oper. or the gauze= ody to become detached from the said metal flanges, there by destroying the safety of the lamp.
The object o-my invention is to remedy these defects.
l wish it to be understood that in the followingspecification and claims that in using thc Vword ganze l intend same to imply the` aforesaid Banged deep cap or conc,
whether constructed of wire gauze mesh, lwrioratcd metal or -thclilte and not for 'saine to be restricted to what iii some trades errace, Morley, in
lrauzc it is usual to bend a sheet of gauze' h h to secure by Letters Patent is Speeietion of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 14, 1911. Application' tiled November 26, 1908. Serial No. 345,254.
is described as gauze z'. e., simply wire mesh material.
ln describing' my invention reference is ,had to the accompanyingsh'eetof drawings in which similar letters indicate similarA -parts:-. f
Figure l. shows in perspective (part in section) one form of my invention. Fig. 2. depicts sectional .elevation (part cut away) oi" modified form of tiange and strengthening ring. l
ln carrying my invention. into eiect I make the entire gauze z'; e., body l Fig. 1,
top la, together with fiange 2, (the latter for securing the whole tothe lamp frame or glass) from one sheet or piece of aluminium, brass, copper, steel, asbestos, or the like, shaping saine into the desired form without -Lcam or joint by means of stamping, spinable nieans.` A suitable number of air inlet apertures or holes 5, situated toward the lower portion of thebody l, and also-a number ot similar apertures or holes 6, to admit of the escape of the productsof coinbustion (these latter apertures being situated toward tlieupper portion of the body 'l andalso in the top 11,) are then formed/by drilling, piercing .or other suitable means.
ning, raising, striking, casting or other suit- The said apertures 5 and 6, are of such a size as to prevent. a flame inside the lamp from communicating with and igniting gas or otherl explosive mixture outside the 'gauze. i y
ln order to strengthen the said Igauze or cap I may leave one or more vertical or horizontal strips or bands of unperfprated' materialsuch as 7 Fig. 1, and may insert in a bend 11' Fig. 2 in the hanged ring^4 a supporting. metal ring 8.
What l. claim as .my invention and desire As a new article of manufactu'rqn integral seamless cap for use. in miners safety lamps. comprising a cylindrical body portion, a top'clo'sing one end thereof and a holding'tiaiigc at theiothcr end thereof, the
body portion and the top being perforated.
2. As a new article of inanufacture, an
. said body portion being perforated.
