Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1911.
Application filed September 13, 1910. Serial No. 581,764.
To CLZZ whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. lll/Inloox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lyme, in the county of New London an d State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Pole, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.
An object of the invention is to provide a climbable pole for supporting wires, clothes lines and the like.
For the purpose mentioned I provide a pole consisting of an elongated body, preferably hollow and constructed of iron, with means on the pole for climbing the same and a flattened. head formed on the pole for receiving the supports adapted to carry electric wires7 clothes lines. and other current conducting or supporting devices.
4Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing the interior construction; and-Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the line in Fig. 2.
Iron poles now generally employed for the various purposes mentioned, are usually constructed of interlaced or connected girders and rods constituting a vertically extending lattice work. These poles. however. are clumsy in appearance and owing to their open construction are exposed to all kinds of weather. which in time eats into the joints and weakens the pole considerably. Furthermore, poles constructed of lattice work. as mentioned7 are generally of rectangular construction and receive a severe strain in heavy gales and high winds.
In my device is embodied a round pole of preferably tapering construction and having` a hollow interior. The climbing supports are purposely made to protrude only a slight distance from they `general line of the pole and thus a neat, strong, and serviceable pole is assured and the pole proper7 being entirely closed when in use, is substantially protected from any inclement weather and no moisture can penetrate into the interior of the pole. Furthermore, by providing a hollow pole, suitably insulated wires can be disposed inside the pole, especially in cases where it is desired. to ground an electric wire.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide an elongated hollow body l Aadapted to be vertically supported in a preferably concrete base ll. The pole l() is provided with a flattened head 12 on which can be secured suitable cross supporting members 13 for carrying electric conductors and the like. A plurality of climbing supports 14 are arranged in a staggered fashion on the body l0 and consistof an outwardly extended portion l and an upwardly extended portion 1G, the said supports 14 being integrally formed on the outer peripheral surface of the pole and preferably in two oppositely disposed vertical rows.
When a lineman or pole climber desires to climb the pole he places the spur of his climbers into the opening 17 formed by the portions and 16, and after lifting himself to the next support 14, repeats the operation at each successive support until he has climbed to the desired height on the pole. The climbing supports 11i are intentionally small in size, thus preserving the graceful outline of the pole and also preventing anybody from climbing the pole.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pole comprising an elongated body and a plurality of laterally extended apertured climbing supports integrally formed on the said body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK HUNSON IVILCOX.
