To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID P. SAMMON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Feed-Basket, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved feed basket, made of wire cloth, reinforced, to maintain its shape at all times, and to provide ventilation for the animal to breathe freely while feeding, to permit dirt and other fine extraneous matter to sift out through the meshes of the wire cloth, and to prevent spilling of the feed in case the animal tosses its head in an upward and backward direction.

For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a wire cloth body bent to form a fiat bottom, straight sides, a straight front and an inclined back, binding bands inclosing between them tlie lower portion of the sides and front of the said body, transverse reinforcing bands extending along the bottom and sides of the said body, and a longitudinal reinforcing band extending along the front, back and bottom of the said body.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draws ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a side elevation of the feed basket as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 8.

The body A of the feed basket is made wholly of wire cloth, of a sufficiently fine mesh to readily retain the oats or other feed, to allow dirt, sand and other fine extraneous matter to drop through the meshes of the body and to provide free circulation of air for the animal to breathe freely while feeding. The body A is preferably made from a single piece of wire cloth, bent to form a flat bottom B, straight sides C, C, a vertical front D and a back E, curved upwardly and rearwardly, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The single piece of wire cloth is f bent to form the bottom, front and sides of unbroken continuity, and the cloth edges overlap and are rivet-ed together at the Specification of Letters Patent.

An annular binding and .reinforcing band F incloses the upper' end of the wire cloth body A, the said band having its inner portion formed with a seam (see Figs. 2 and 4), to receive and retain the upper edge of the wire cloth body. The binding and reinforcing band F, by the. arrangement described, presents a rounded off top, to pre vent injury to the auimals head when the feed basket is in use.

The lower portion of the body A of the feed basket is reinforced by an exterior reinforcing band G and an interior reinforcing band Gr, inclosing between them the lower portions of the sides C, C and the front D, the said bands G, G being approximately Ushaped for the purpose. Transverse bands H and H extend exteriorly along the sides C, C and the bottom B of the body A; and opposite the rear transverse band H, on 'the inner faces of the sides C, C are arranged reinforcing bands l', engaged at their upper ends by the upper terminals H2 of the band H, and these terminals H2 are bent inward and downward over the top binding band F. A longitudinal extending reinforcing band J engages exterior-ly the front D, the bottom B and the back E, and the rear terminal J of the said band J is bent over the binding band F and extends downward on the inside of the front D, as plainly indicated in Fig. 4. Another reinforcing band J2 extends on the inside of the front D opposite the front portion of the reinforcing band J, and supplementary reinforcing bands K are arranged exteriorly on the back E on opposite sides of the rear portion of the reinforcing band J. Rivets or other suitable fastening devices are employed to secure the several overlapping parts together, so as to form an exceedingly rigid structure, not liable to lose its shape when in use.

The binding band F and the upper ends of the reinforcing bands H and I are provided with transversely-extending register'd ing apertures, for receiving hooks L connected with springs N attached to a sup port-ing band O held on the animals head, for supporting the feed bag in the desired position, so that the animal can readilytake up the feed contained in the feed basket.

By having the sides C, C practically parallel, the front D straight and the back E curved upwardly and rearwardly, it is evident that when the feed basket is in use, the animals head fits nicely into the feed basket, so that the feed is not liable to be spilled in case the animal tosses its head in an upward and backward direction, and by making the back E curved in the manner described, the feed readily passes down within the basket, so that the animal can reach all of the feed in the basket, and at the same time sufficient room is provided in the rear for the animal to properly open and close its mouth while feeding.

The feed basket shown and described is exceedingly simple and durable in construction, and not liable easily to getout of shape.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A feed basket, comprisingT a body made from a single piece of wire cloth bent to forni a bottom, a front and sides of iur broken continuity, aiid a rearwardly and upwardly curved back at which the cloth edges overlap and are fastened together, a binding and reinforcing band inclosing the upper end of the said body, reinforcing strips inclosing between them the lower portions of the front and sides of the said body, spaced transverse reinforcing bands fastened exteriorly to the sides and bottom of the said body, a longitudinal reinforcing` band fastened exteriorly to the front, bottom and back of the said body approximately at the middle thereof, supplementary reinforcing` bands fastened exteriorly to the back of the said body at opposite sides of the frontportion of the said longitudinal reinforcing band, supplementary reinforcing bands arranged on the inner faces of the sides of the body opposite the front transverse reinforcing band and secured to the latter, and a supplementary reinforcing band arranged on the inside of the front of the body opposite the rear reinforcing band and riveted thereto.
