Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. KEEP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in ltletal-Founders Flasks, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying d 'awings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to founders flasks.
It has for its object an improved flask in which there is a match plate, with interconnecting means between the flask and the match plate of a character such that the match plate may be lifted out from the opened-out flask without actually removing the cope part of the flask from the drag part thereof, and nevertheless, will be accurately guided to its proper position with respect to the upper and lower parts of the flask when the structure is used. The match plate, when in position between the flask members whether they be opened or closed, and whether the match plate be closed entirely down on the drag or partially lifted therefrom, is inca iable of lateral movement, and nevertheless, the connecting members are so constructed that any one of a number of slightly different match plates may be used interchangeably with a plurality of flasks, this peculiar feature of interchangeable use being desirable because of the difliculty that exists from inequalities of the shrinkage of metal and accidental irregularities of measurement in producing entire uniformity of interchangeable parts. This is especially desirable, because in the flask which forms the subject of this invention the match plate, or some parts of the match plate are frequently made of castmetal, and cast metal plates are liable to variation because of the To accomplish this I construct one of the hinges of the flask with a comparatively narrow V-shaped cavity and the other one of the hinges with a V-shaped cavity broader along the axis of the hinge in order that one of the projections from the match plate engaging in the narrow cavity may prevent what I will call side motion, that, is, motion along the axis of the hinge, while the other projection engaging in the broader ca'vity co-acts with the first to prevent fore and aft motion on that end of the match plate.
Another feature of the invention is found in a support used with the drag part of the flask to sustain the rear edge or back of the 1 drag part of the flask when the cope part of the flask is turned to an upright position, and the weight of the cope and its contained sand is brought overthe rear edge of the drag. This is rendered necessary because in the use of the match plates, the flask is usually one that is filled by machine process and the press board used in machine work does not act like the ordinary bottom board to sustain the flask as a whole, but only sustains the sand within the flask and generally does not itself sink entirely into the flask, and thus presents a projection below the flask leaving the flask body proper without sup port other than that of the sand that is packed within it.
Another object of the invention relates to the construction of the match plate in a way to be treated to change its effective thickness by placing blocks on the four corners of the flask proper, which are compensated for by dressing the corresponding contact surfaces of the match plate and thereby regulating the distance between the cope and the drag when they are closed together.

The drag member 1 of the flask is a rec tangular box without a bottom, adapted to be filled with sand in the ordinary way, but having the sand compressed within it by the use of the press board and a lever press; this member of the flask is provided at its front edge with projecting lugs, from which rise pins 11, adapted to engage through holes in lugs that project from the cope part 6 of the flask. At the rear or hinge edge there are parts which project and serve as bearings, and which may be considered as parts of hinges. The hinge member which is secured to the drag is a horn shaped member 3, curved and having its upper face 3 inclined to meet at a common line along the upper surface of the horn. In front of the horn, and between it and the terminal of the hinge, which is close to the wall of the drag, there is formed a cayity 9, which is semi-circular in that cross section which is parallel with the cross axis of the drag; the sides of this cavity are inclined, giving to the cavity the shape of the half of a hollow cone; in this cavity engages a double conical pintle 8 on the matchplate 7. That part of the hinge which is secured to the cope is provided with a hinge member that extends to the rear, and is curved to nearly a full circle. It would be a full circle were it not for the neck part which holds it to the cope; in the head-like projection thus formed is a circular groove 5, triangular in cross section, inclosed between two conical surfaces which diverge from the bottom of the groove 5 to the surface st, and these conical surfaces extend for nearly a full circle, producing a structure that may be compared to a spool, and which for convenience may be called a spool. This spool-like part of the hinge is adapted to engage on the inclined upper surfaces of the horn member 3, and serves as a pintle for the turning movement of the cope when it is swung with respect to the drag. Primarily, and when the matchplate is in place, the surface of the spool does not engage on the surface of the horn member, but is so related to it that the one part is kept from shifting endwise with respect to the other, and when so assembled the cope member of the hinge is lifted above its nor mal seat on the horn by reason of its engagement on the. pintle S of the matchplate. In front of the spool portion of the cope member is a cavity 8, nearly semi-circular in its cross-section across the flask, and with inclined surfaces, which, in the closed condition of the several parts of the flask, engage closely over the pintle 8. A second cavity 8 at the other end of the flask is nearly similar in construction except, however, that the cavity 8 at the one end of the cope is narrow along the axis of the hinge as com pared with the cavity 8 of the companion hinge. The pintle 8 is circular, or nearly so, and made either as a part of, or secured to, the matchplate, projecting about onehalf its diameter beyond the rear edge of the matchplate, and one-half its diameter above the middle line of the matchplate, and one-half its diameter below the middle line of the matchplate. It forms a secondary pintle for the hinge members of the cope and drag, on which the cope swings as a bearing in its movement when the cope is swung either to open or close the flask with the matchplate included thereon. Preferably the pintle 8 is an integral part of a piece of hard metal 8 formed with interlocking projections S adapted to be secured in the body of the matchplate by casting the matchplate in proper relation with the pintle and its immediate connections; the main body of the matchplate is of lighter and softer metal.
In operation, the parts are placed in closed relation, with the matchplate between the cope and the drag, and held in its proper relation thereto by the pins 11, and by the rearwardly extending projections from the matchplate, which engage in the V shaped openings of the spool of the flask hinges. The cope and the drag are brought into proper register by means of the pins 11 and the horns of the hinge which engage with. the spools, the groove of the one part engaging the ridge of the other part. If the flask be alarge one, it is placed on the floor, and the sand filled in and rammed. If the flask be a small one, it may be rammed, but it is preferably placed on a machine and squeezed. On the large flask the sand is leveled off and the bottom board, which extends beyond the sand and engages the walls of the flask itself, is placed upon the level sand, and the entire flask is turned over, in order that the other side of it may be filled and completed. .If the flask is small the drag is filled with sand, the bottom'board 12, adapted to engage inside the walls of the flask, is placed on the sand, the entireflask is turned over on the press, the cope is filled, leveled off, and the press board placed upon it, and with a squeezer both boards are forced into the flask until the sand in both is packed to the required amount. The sand in this case is placed between each of the squeezing boards and each side of the matchplate. In the large flask .the entire frame thereof is supported by the bottom board, and the cope may be swung upward from the drag for the purpose of removing the matchplate. In a small flask, in which the sand has been pressed by the squeezer, the frame of the drag is not supported for the reason that the bottom board is smaller seems than the inside of the drag, and affords no support to the frame of the drag. The weight of the frame of the cope, and of the sand in the cope, primarily rests upon the matchplate, and this in turn engages closely on the sand packed in the drag, which in its turn rests on the bottom board, and this on the bed plate 13 of the squeezer. The frame of the drag, however, is not supported, but is held up by its adhesion to the sand packed within it. plate from both the large and small flasks, the cope is swung, and this brings its entire weight upon the horns of the flask hinges, which extend to the rear from the drag part of the flask, and in the small flask using the inclosed press boards there is now no support sufficient to sustain the great weight which is now brought to bear on the rear of the drag frame. I place under the frame part of the drag adjustable sustaining members 17, which may be adjusted to correspond with tlie amount that the press board protrudes from the drag after the sand has been properly compressed within it. A simple form of such sustaining members consists of pins 17 that project through the table on which the flask is supported (the table of the press) these pins engage through bosses 14: that rise from surfaces of the table and are lifted by wedges 15, on which the bottom ends of the pins rest. The wedges are pushed in by the workman and withdrawn by the workman who grasps the cross bar 16 which connects the two wedges. If the mold produces a casting that is too thick, the four corners 18 of the cope or 19 of the drag are dressed down so as to allow the cope and drag to come nearer together, when the matchplate is removed and the flask is closed; or by adding a sheet of metal to all corners, the cope and drag will be forced farther apart, and when the matchplate is removed and the flask closed, a thicker casting will be produced.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a molding device, in combination with a hinged member for the drag, a hinge member for the cope provided with a V shaped recess formed as part of the groove around the pintle part of the hinge member, a match plate provided with a rearward projection V shaped in cross section adapted to engage in said recess eccentric to the axis of the said pintle and prevent the match plate from shifting.

In a molding device, in combination with a knuckle hinge member secured to the drag, a pintle hinge member secured to the cope provided with an angular groove around the pintle, a match plate provided with a projection angled in cross section to correspond with said angular groove and adapted to engage therein eccentric to the axis of said pintle, substantially as described.

In a molding device, a cope having spool shaped pintles in its hinge provided with V shaped recesses both at the front and the rear of said pintles, a drag provided with hinge portions having horn-like projections adapted to engage at the rear of said pintle and underneath the same, and a match plate having rearward extending projections adapted to bear in the V shaped recesses at the front of said spools, whereby the cope when tilted is actuated to bring the spool shaped pintles into proper engagement with the surface of the horns be-' neath the pintles, substantially as described.
6. In a molding device, a cope hinge member having spool shaped pintles with V shaped recesses at both the front and the rear thereof, a drag hinge member having a horn-like projection adapted to engage the rearmost recess and under the pintle, a match plate having a rearward projection angular in cross section adapted to engage in the V shaped recess in front of said pint-1e eccentric to the axis thereof and to serve as an auxiliary pintle on which the cope rests and around which it turns, substantially as described.
7. In a molding device, the combination of a cope provided with a spool shaped pintle portion having V shaped recesses at the front and rear thereof, a match plate provided with a rearward projection adapted to bear in a V shaped recess at the front of the spool, horns V shaped in cross section rising and engaging in the rear V shaped recess of the spool and curving below the said spool pintle and adapted to actuate the cope in its proper relative location when tilted, substantially as described.
8. In a molding device, the combination of a cope and a drag having hinged connection at their rear edges, a match plate provided with an auxiliary pintle member, pressure boards engaging within the boundaries of the cope and the drag and a support adapted to engage the rear edge of the drag frame and adapted to hold it in its sustained relation with respect to said pressure board when the cope is tilted and the weight of said cope transferred from a uniform weight over said drag to an unequalized weight on the rear edge thereof, substantially as described.
9. In a molding device, in combination with a flask a separable hinge therefor, a matchplate provided with an auxiliary pintle adapted to engage between the separable members of the hinge eccentric to the main pintle thereof, a support adapted to engage the rear edge of the drag member of said flask, and a bottom press board adapted to engage within the flask, substantially as described.
10. In a molding device, the combination of a cope and a drag, hinged together, a match plate removable from between said cope and drag, pressure boards adapted to engage within the cope and the drag and means whereby the drag frame is sustained with respect to said pressure board, substantially as described.
11. In a molding device, the combination of a cope and a drag, hinged together, with hinges constructed to form V shaped recesses both at the front and the rear of the hinge pintles, a match plate provided with rearwardly extending projections adapted to register with such recesses, cup shaped recesses in the drag part of the hinges, projections to form acomplement to said recesses on the match plate extending below the upper surface thereof adapted to form a close rolling and lateral engaging contactin the recess 8 and a rolling contact free from lateral engagement in the recess 8 substantially as described.
12. In a molding device, having in combination hinged cope and drag members, said hinges being formed with V-shaped recesses 8 and 8 at the front and with cup-shaped cavities on the lower members of said hinges, a match plate having rearward projections complementary to said recesses and cavities adapted to engage therein, the said rearward projections being extended both above and below the surface of the said match plate, and constituting a secondary pintle eccentric to the main pintle, of said hinges, substantially as described.
13. In a molding device, in combination, hinged cope and drag members and a match plate adapted to be inserted therebetween, projections located on the corners of the flask members adapted to space the match plate from the main run of the surface of the flask members, substantially as described.
H. In a molding device consisting of a cope and a drag member and a match plate adapted to be inserted between the cope and the drag member, separable hinges on said cope and drag members, a pair of hinge pintles on said match plate adapted to en gage with the separable hinges on the cope and the drag, one of said hinge pintles on said match plate engaging in a cavity comparatively narrow along the axis of the hinge, and the other of said pintle members on said match plate engaging in a cavity wider along the axis of the hinge pintle than the length of the hinge pintle whereby in the assembled structure, the said match plate may be utilized with any one of a plurality of pairs of flask members and there is afforded compensation for inaccuracies in the construction and size of the match plate, substantially as described.
15. In a molding device having in combination a cope and a drag hinged together, a bottom pressure board adapted to engage within the molding device, a support to sustain the rear end of the drag member with respect to said pressure board when the pressure board is positioned partially within the d ag member and the cope is swung up on its hinges, thereby transferring its weight from its normally equal distribution over the drag and bringing it entirely upon the rear edge of the drag, substantially as described.
