CHALK-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. *7, 1911.
Application filed September 2, 1910. Serial No. 580,185.
To @Il whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ConNnALUs P. HOOVER,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hartford, in the county of Lyon and State or Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Line Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to chalk line holders, the object ot' the invention being to provide an improved article ot this character onto which the chalk line may be wound and to provide an effective chalk receptacle constructed to permit the passage of the line thereto to chalk the same in an etlicient manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide the chalk receptacle with a retarding element over which the line is designed to travel, the said retarding element through its engagement with the line offering thereto in its movement sutlicient resistance to prevent unwinding of the line too rapidly from the support, the said retarding element also acting as a regulating means to control. the feed of chalk onto the line.
another object of the invention is to provide telt or elastic like washers at the apertured ends of the chalk receptacle and to construct the said regulating and retarding element so as to bear against the said elastic disks to hold them elo-sed against the ends of the receptacle to prevent the accidental discharge of the chalk from the said apertured end.
ln the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved line holder. Fig 2 i? a longitudinal section therethrough.
The line holder comprises a substantially spool-like member 1 which is provided with a longitudinal passage 2, as shown. The member 1 is constructed to permit the cord 3 to be wound thereon as shown particularly in Fig. l of the drawing. The member 1 is 'provided at its ends with heads or guards t,
each of which being provided with a kerf 5 tor a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A. receptacle (3 is mounted in the passage 2 in the member 1, and as illustrated, it is provided at one end with a xed plug 7 and at its opposite end with a removable plug 8. The plugs are provided with alining passages 9, as shown. A combined regulating and retarding element 10 is located in the receptacle 6 and as illustrated, it consists preferably of a spring-like member which is formed to provide the looped end portions 11 and the intermediate substantially U-shaped portions 12. rlhe construction of the portions 12 is such that radial retarding arms 13 are provided and disposed in line with the passages 9 in the plugs of the receptacle. An apertured felt or suitable elastic disk 14 bears against the inner end of the plug 7 and a similar disk 15 bears against the inner end of the plug 8. The elasticity of the retarding and regulating element is such that the ends 1Q bear against the disks 14 and 15 to hold them tight against the plugs 7 and 8 to prevent the chalk from lodging behind the disks and Jfrom escaping into the passages 9. The cord 3, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, extends through the kerf- 5 in one head of the support 1 and through the plugs 7 and S and the receptacle 6. The tree terminal ot the cord is formed to provide a loop 1G, and as illustrated, the free terminal of the cord may be confined in the kerlt 5 in the opposite head ot the support 1 to hold the cord against unwinding when the holder is not in use. A' ring 17 is mounted on the cord and is disposed inwardly of one of the heads 4 of the holder so as to permit the convenient manipulation of the cord when it is desired to remove the same from the kerf 5 in that head adjacent to the plug S. The cord may be threaded through one or more of the intermediate loops of the said retarding and regulating element soas to prevent the superiiuous appearance of the chalk to the line. The arms 13 of the intermediate loops also serve to bear with sufficient friction against the cord to prevent atoo rapid unwinding of the same from the holder.
l claim:
1. A chalk line holder comprising a supporting member for the line, the line having one of its terminal ends extending through the supporting member, the said supporting member having a chamber formed therein through which the line can be drawn, apertured closures at the ends of the chamber, apertured elastic disks fitting against the apertured ends of the chamber, and a retarding element of springy material rotating in the chamber and frictionally contacting with the line and having its end portions bearing against the elastic disks to hold them against the said apertured ends of the chambei'.
2. A ehaik line holder Comprising a spoollike supporting member for the line, the said member having a Chalk containing chamber therein, apertured plugs closing the ends of the chamber, a line carried by the support and having one of its end portions extended through the said apeitui'ed plugs and through the chamber, the said supporting l member having retaining keifs therein, the i said line having portions remoiahly enl gag-ed 1n the kerfs to prevent unwmding of t 1e line from the supporting member.
in testimony whereof I ai'ix my signatui'e in presence of two Witnesses.
