REDUCING-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN GRAHAM and ARCHIBALD GRAHAM, J r., subjects of the King of Great Britain and ireland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, and DAVID AULD GRAHAM, also a subject of the King of Great- Britain and reland, and residing at Ruthcrglen, Scot-land, all engineers, have invent-ed new and useful Improvements in Reducing-Valves, of which the following is a specilication.
Our invention relates to improvements in and relating to reducing valves and has for its object to keep the reduced pressure more constant and prevent the pulsating of the valve when working, also the object of producing a reducing valve with greatly increased closing power.
In order that others skilled in the art to lwhich our invention relates may understand the same we have hereunto appended one sheet of illustrative drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a valve constructed according to our improvements, and F ig. 2 is an elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
1n carrying this invention into practice, the valve 1 rests on a seat 2 formed in a partition 3 between the inlet and outlet chambers, 1 and 5 respectively, of the valve casing 6, and has a pendent spindle7 screwed or otherwise secured at its lower end to a disk S. This disk 8 has an annular circumferential wall 9 which is formed with a radial flange 10, or the disk may be concave with a radial flange. Secured on the lower part of the spindle 7 and forming a central boss to the disk S is a piston 11 of a diameter to effect the balancing of the valve 1 when both are subjected to the same pressure. The valve casing 6 is continued down and forms a chamber 12 around the valve spindle 7 and this chamber 12 is expanded at its lower end. A rubber or other flexible diaphragm 13 is inserted between the lower end of the casing 6, formed with a flange 1st, and a ring plate 15, these being bolted together. The central opening of the ring plate forms a cylinder for the balancing piston 11. rEhe diaphragm 13 is extended to cover the chamber 16 formed by the vlower disk and is secured between its flanges 10 and a ring plate 17 bolted to them. Constructed in this manner the valve 1, spindle 7 and lower disk 8 with its ring 17 form a part which is Specification of Letters Patent.

capable of' movement relatively to the other part which consists of the valve casing 6 and its ring 15. Direct acting` spring or springs 18 shown in F ig. 2, or weights acting through lever mechanism, may be einployed to regulate the reduced pressure of the steam required. These springs 18 as shown are attached to the ring plate 17 and to the bridge piece 21 bearing on the casing G by the regulating screw 22. A duct 19 is formed between the outlet lower pressure chamber 20 and the chamber 16 below the diaphragm 13 to permit the low pressure steam to act on the lower part of the chamber to close the valve 1 when the desired pressure is attained or exceeded.
The action is as follows Initial pressure enters by the inlet 1 and chamber 12 between the under side of valve 1 and upper side of balancing piston 11, which are thus in equilibrium. On the valve being opened by the action of the springs 18 the steam flows through the valve 1 to the lower pressure outlet chamber 20 and continues to flow as long as the reduced pressure steam is maintained at the pressure desired. Any tendency of' the reduced pressure to rise or be increased reacts down the port 19 to the chamber 16 below the diaphragm 13 and closes the valve 1 by drawing down its spindle 7, and by acting on the top side of the valve.
Instead of the ductmentioned the valve spindle 7 may be hollow instead of as shown and conduct the low pressure steam to the chamber 16 below the diaphragm 13.
Vhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 1n a reducing valve the combination comprising an elongated casing, a valve, a spindle connected to the valve, a balancing piston on the spindle, a lower chamber, an elastic diaphragm between the lower chamber and the casing, an outer ring plate over the diaphragm and bolted to the disk forming the lower chamber, an inner ring plate under the diaphragm and bolted to the casing, a duct between the delivery side of the valve and the lower chamber, and regulating' springs substantially as set torth.
2. 1n a reducing valve the combination comprising an elongated casing, a valve, a spindle connected to the valve, a balancing piston on the spindle formed in one with a disk on the lower end ofthe spindle, a chamber above the disk, a diaphragm separating the chamber from the casing, and inner and outer ring plates bolted to Jche easing and disk respectively substantially as set forth.
3. A reducing valve Comprising a casing having an elongated portion formed with inlet and outlet chambers, a partition between the Chambers, a Valve spindle extending through the casing, a disk secured on the lower end of the Valve spindle and forming a lower chamber7 a diaphragm secured between the easing and the lower Chamber, a ring plate bolted to the disk, a bridge piece I bearing on the easing, and regulating springs secured to and between the bridge l5 piece and the ring plate.
