REDUCING-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN GRAHAM and ARoriiBALD GRAHAM, Jr., subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Glasgow, Scotland, engineers, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reducing-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to and comprises improvements in reducing valves, and consists in the adaptation of means for producing a wider opening of the valve and consequent passage of a much larger volume or" pressure fluid than as heretofore has been the case.
According to the present invention cup leathers or the like are substituted for a flexible diaphragm and instead of vertical springs acting directly to raise and open the valve, this is eiifected by levers and toggle links acted on by horizontally placed springs, the object being to allow of the valve having a very large lift without causing the reduced pressure to vary greatly, in cases where it is desired to pass a large volume of pressure fluid.
In order that others skilled in the art may understand our invention and the manner of carrying the same into effect or practice, we have hereunto appended two sheets of illustrative drawings in which- Figure 1, on Sheet 1, is a sectional elevation of a valve constructed in accordance with our invention, while Fig. 2, on Sheet 2, is a side elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 8, on Sheet 1, is a plan of the loading support and Fig. 4 is a plan of the bottom crosshead.
Referring to these drawings :-In carrying this invention into effect or practice the valve 1 is balanced by a piston 2 secured on the valve spindle 8 and working within the cylinder 4; formed in the valve casing 5 and secured thereon by the nut 6 screwing on the spindle 3 against the boss 7 of the disk 8. This disk 8 is formed with a pendent annular flange or wall 9 which is carried outward and is reverted in the form of a vertical annular flange 10. The space be tween the pendent and vertical flanges forms an annular controlling chamber 11 in communication with the low pressure side 12 of the valve by means of the duct 13. The upper part of the controlling chamber 11 is closed by a ring 14 secured to the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

Instead of flexible diaphragms, cup leathers 16 and 17 are employed to form fluid tight joints between the balancing piston 2 and the wall of its cylinder tit, and between the ring 1 1 and the vertical flange 10. The balancing piston 2 and the disk 8 with its annular flanges 9 and are thus free to reciprocate vertically 011 the lower flange of the casing and so control the opening of the valve.
Instead of vertical springs, horizontal springs 18 ar employed carried on the rod 19, which is passed through the bar 82 and secured to it by the pinching screw 20 and is supported by the bracket support 29 shown in plan by Fig. 3, pressure regulating nuts 21 being screwed on to the rod 19 at each end. The springs 18 abut against rings 22 loose on the rod 19 and these rings 22 press on the free ends of the levers 23, which on gage with the toggle links 24:, which act on the under side of the bar to raise it under the pressure of the springs.
A projection 26 on the bar enters a notch in the bridge piece 27 which is c011- nected by the vertical rods 30 to the bottom crosshead 31, shown in plan view Fig. 1, Sheet 1.
The action is as follows :-Ilie springs 18 acting on the levers 23 and toggle links 24 raise the bridge piece 27 which by its vertical pillars or connecting rods 30 raises the disk 8, balancing piston 2 and the valve 1, by means of the crosshead 31, when the high pressure will pass from the inlet 28 to the outlet 12. When the pressure on the low pressure side exceeds that for which the valve is set, by adjusting the springs 18, it passes through the duct 13 and acts in the annular controlling chambers 11. to pull down the valve spindle and close the valve.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a reducing valve the combination comprising a casing, a valve, a spindle connected to the valve, a balance piston on the spindle, a disk on the spindle below the balance piston, reverted flanges on the disk, an annular pressure chamber between the flanges of the disk, a ring closing the pressure chamber bolted to the casing, a duct from the low pressure side of the valve to the pressure chamber, cup leathers between the balancing piston and the casing and between the closing ring and the disk outer flange and means for raising the valve substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a valve casing; a valve therein; and means for operating said valve including a crosshead connected thereto; two rods connected respectively to opposite ends of the crosshead; a bridge piece connecting said rods; toggle links respectively engaging said bridge piece; levers respectively engaged by said links and pivoted to thecasing; a rod carried by said casing; with two springs mounted on the rod and respectively engaged by said 16- 15 vers.
