Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. lYA'r'r, citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, county of Dallas, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the following is a specication, reference -being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an acetylene gas generator, and particularly to an improved construction of carbid feeding hopper, and valve operating connection therefrom to the gasometer.
rPhe invention has for an object to provide an improved construction and arrangement of operating valve pivotally mounted upon the carbid receptacle so that this receptacle cannot be opened for refilling without first disconnecting the valve lever permitting the valve to close so as to absolutely prevent the discharge of any gas remaining' in the generating chamber.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and the novel features thereof delined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective of the machine; Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a detail section of the lever connection with the gasometer; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the lever connection with the valve rod; Fig. 5 is a vertical section showing the lever pivot upon the cap of the carbid receptacle, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of the carbid receptacle connection.

rlhe numeral 10 designates the generating chamber which may be of any desired construction or configuration and is provided at its upper portion with a threaded connection 11 adapted to receive a coperating neck 12 carried by the carbid receptacle 18 which is provided with the usual inwardly tapering` portion 14 to feed material toward this neck. Cooperating with the neck 12 and passing therethrough is the feed valve 15 which is disposed within the easing 16 depending from the top 17 of the carbid receptacle. The valve is provided with an opern ating rod or stem 18 passing through the packing 19 carried by the top of the carbid receptacle, and the upper end of the rod has Specification of Letters Patent.

The receptacle is provided with a filling openingl 21 adapted to be closed by the threaded cap 22 which carries upon its upper surface the pivot plate 23 for the valve lever 24T. T his plate is formed with a curved recess 25 in its upper edge to support the lever in position, as shown in Fig. The opposite end of this lever is provided with a horizontally disposed eye 26 removably threaded thereon at 27, and passing through this eye is the upper threaded end of the gasometer connection 28 which is rigid and carried by the bell 29 of the gasometer 30. This connection may comprise a tube and is of rigid character so as to hold and lock the valve in its adjusted position. For the purpose of connecting the lever 24rto this connection 28 and permitting oscillation of the lever as well as its removal when itis desired to fill the receptacle, the upper end of the connection is provided with a nut 31 threaded thereon and also with a removable thumb nut 32 disposed at the opposite side of the eye 26 to permit the ready disconnection of the lever from the rod.
The generating chamber is provided with a water feed tube 3?) extending' downward therein and also with a sludge agitator' 34 disposed within said tube and having an arm 35 located adjacent the bottom of the chamber 10. This chamber is also provided with a stand pipe 36 which may be turned downward when it is desired to discharge from the. generating chamber. The gas from the generator passes through the pipe 3T and into the gasometer b v means of the pipe 38 and thence upward by pipe 39 where it is discharged below the water level and rises to the upper portion of the bell 29 thus forming a water seal against the passage of the gas back to the generator when the same is being recharged. The gas passes downward through the purifier 110 to pipe 41 and the service pipe 42. The purifier or filter is disposed beneath the water level to eliect a cooling thereof. and its upper end is extended above the water level to permit the entrance of and prevent the entrance of water therein. rlhe gasometer is also provided with the blow oil connection comprising the pipe a?) depending from the bell and coperating with the blow orf pipe 44C having a suitable discharge connection outside of the gasonieter, and the pipes therein are supported by the plug connection 45.
In the operation of the invention, the gas produced in the generator from the carbid is fed to the gasometer and there filtered and passed to the service line. The rod from the dome of this gasometer by its connection with the lever controlling the carbid valve produces a positive operation thereof and holds said valve in its adjusted position. rlhe pivotal mounting' of this lever upon the closure of the carbid receptacle prevents the opening of said receptacle without the disconnect-ion of the lever which permits the valve to fall into closed position before the cap can be removed to introduce further carbid to the receptacle. As an accessory to the re moval of this lever the fixed nut and thumb screw upon the rod from the gasometer dome eifect av removable connection therewith which retains the lever against accidental displacement and requires such disconnection before the lever can be removed from its pivot. The removable eye or ring carried by the valve stem permits the complete removal of the valve from the carbid receptacle after its disconnection from t-he generating chamber, and the lateral removal of the rod from the ring after the disconnection of t-he lever from the gasometer rod. The construction of carbid chamber permits its ready connection and disconnection with the generator and the depending casing for the valve therein allows said valve to be removed from the discharge end of said receptacle by simply disconnecting the ring therefrom so that its stein may pass through the packing. The invention therefore presents a simple, eiiicient and easily operated acetylene4 gas machine in which the feed of carbid to the generator is positively cont-rolled by the gasometer and the valve held in its adjusted position.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In an acetylene gas generator, a carbid receptacle having a filling opening, a removable closure for said opening having a pivoting plate, an operating lever pivoted upon said plate, a feed valve within said receptacle and connected to one end of said lever, a connection from a gasometer dome to the opposite end of said lever, an eye upon said lever embracing said connection, adjustable contact means upon said gasometer connection beneath said eye, and a removable nut thereon at its free end above the eye.
2. In an acetylene gas generator, a carbid receptacle having a filling opening, a removable closure for said opening provided with a pivoting plate having an open recess upon its upper edge, an operating lever resting in said recess upon said plate, a valve within said receptacle connected at one end to said lever, and a gasometer dome connected to the opposite end thereof.
In an acetylene gas generator', a carbid receptacle having a filling opening, a removable closure for said opening provided with a pivot, an operating lever detachably mounted upon said pivot, a valve within said receptacle detachably connected at one end with said lever, and a gasometer dome detachably connected to the opposite end thereof.
