WILLIAM M. REYNOLDS, F MIDDLETOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN ROLLING MILL COMPANY, OF MIDDLETOWN,. OHIO,
FLUME.
Specification of Letters Patent;
I Application filed November 28, 1910. Serial No. 594,450.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, lVILLIA M M. REY- NoLDs, a citizenof the United States, residing at Middletown,'Butler county, Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, pertaining to improvements in flumes,.w1ll be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a'portion of a flume exemplifying my present inof the same: and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of one of the joints in the plane of line a in Fig. 2.
In the drawing :1, indicates one of the sections of the flume, the same being in the form of a semicircular metallic gutterzfl, a cireumferentially extending crimp near one end of the section, this crimp forming an outwardly projecting bead and a corre sponding inner recess, the crimp being best of V-shape in cross-section: 3, a similar crimp near the other end of't'he section, the sections all being alike int-having a crimp at each end: 4, a flame-section joining the section 1, the head of section 1 being seated in the recess of section 4: 5, .a fiume-section similarly joining the other end of flumesection 1: 6, supports at the sides of the flume at each joint, these supports taking, preferably, the form of suitably sustained continuous longiti'ldinal timbers: 7, metallic saddles disposed below each joint in the fiume, these saddles being crimped in crosssection to engage the outside beads at the joints: 8, ears projecting outwardly from the extremities of -the saddles and resting on the supports 6: 9, clipssecured to the tops of each support at each joint, these clips having portions projecting inwardly over the upper edges, of the fiume: 10, a curved rod, preferably circular' in cross-section,v
lying within the inner recess at each joint in the flume, each rod extending entirely around within the semicircle of theflume and projecting above "its edges and through the clips 9: 11, nuts upon the threaded ends of the rods 10 their upper surfaces forming shoulders engaging below the clips 9: and 12, bolts firmly securing ears 8 and clips 9 to the supports 6.
The saddles 7 having been placed in proper position 'on the supports 6, serve as crossstays between the supports and also serve Patented Mar. 7, 1911;
as saddles to receive and sustain thefl-umeQ i ports 6. nuts 11 maybe employed in forcing the rods downwardly, whereby the two jointmembers of the fiume become pressed ti htly together between the rods and the sac dle's. The rodshnay be forced to their work either by turning the nuts, as just noted, or by drawing the clips down by means of bolts 12, the nuts in the latter case acting as mere upwardly presenting "shoulders on the rods to engage under the clips.
I I claim Z-1 1. A flume comprising,-supports at the sides of the 'flume, a saddle disposed at each joint in the flume and having its ends connected with said supports, and a metallic gutter resting in said saddles, the saddles being crimped in cross-section, and the gutthe clips 9 having been secured to the supvent1on: Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section ter being composed of sections provided near I their ends with in'ter-membering crinips, the exterior members of the crimps engaging within the saddles, combined substantially as set forth.
'2. A flume comprising, longitudinal timbers disposed at the sides of the flume and forming the'supports therefor, a saddle disposed at each joint in the flume and having its ends connected with said timbers. and a metallic gutter resting in" said saddles, the saddles being crimped in cross-section, and the gutter-being composed of sections provided near their ends with inter-membering crimps, the exterior members of the crimps engaging within the saddles, combi'ned substantially as set forth. I
3. A fiume comprising, supports at the sides of the flume, a saddle disposed at each joint in the fiume and having its ends con,- nected with said supports, a metallic gutter resting in said saddles, the saddles being crimped in cross-sectioni; and the gutter being composed of sections provided near their ends with inter-membering erimps, the exterior members of the crimps engaging within the saddles, curved rods lying within the inner crimps of the joints of the gutter and having their ends projecting above the side edges of the gutter, upwardly presenting shoulders at the ends of the rods, and clips secured to said supports over the supported ends of the saddles va d having inward projections engaging} above said shoulders, combined substantially as set. forth.
4. A flume eon'iprising.supports at the sides of the flame. a saddle disposed at each joint in the flume and having its ends connected with said supports. a metallic gutter resting in said saddles, the saddles being crimped in cross-section, and the gutter bemg composed of sections provided neat-then ends with inter-membermg ernnps, the exwithin the saddles, curved rods lying within the inner crimps of the joints of the gutter and having their ends projecting above the. side edges of the gutter, nuts threaded on. th ends of the rods. and clips secured to said supports over the supported ends of the saddles and having inward projections engaging above said nuts, combined substantially as set forth.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 1 5. A flume comprising, supports at the "sides of the flume, saddles disposed at each joint in the flume and having their ends i rigidly connected with said supports, a g metalliegutter formed of sections having l overlapping ends resting in said saddles, a l curved rod disposed within the gutter at 1 each joint and over the saddles, and means carried by the supports and engaging the 1 ends of the rods and serving to force the rods downwardly toward the saddles, coml bined substantially as set forth.
1 6. A flume comprising, saddles having ioutwardly projecting ends, a gutter (zoml posed of metallic sections having their ends lover-lapping and resting in said saddles, tcurved rods extending around within the E gutter at each joint, clips over-lying the outj wardly projecting ends of the saddles and engaging the upper edges of the curved rods, terior members of the erlmps engaging 5 bolts serving to draw the clipsiand the ends of the saddles toward each other and to 2 force the curved rods downwardly, and supl ports engaging under the outer ends of the saddles, combined substantially as set forth.
