Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Application filed NoVember 28, 1919. Serial No. 5%,451.
I To all 'whpm it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. ltnri noLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, Butler county, @hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flumes, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention, pertaining to improven ents in fiuines, will. be readily understood t'romthe following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in Whicl Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a flame eicornplil'ying my present invention: Fig. 2, a Vertical transverse section of the same rand Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of one of the joints in the plane of line a in Fig. 2.
In the drawings--l indicates one of the sections of the dome, some being in the form of a semicircular metallic gutter: 2, a circui'nfci'entially xtending crimp near one end of the s N forming sides of the orts talrin preteral'ily, ably sustained continuous hers: Y, metallic saddles (h sup- 'forn'i suit nal tuncriniped in crosssection to engage 1 side hoe at the joints 8, cars pz-M-erzting outwar y from the e); i' niitios ot the sad i dles and resting on the supports 5: i). clips l seemed to the tops of each support a; each i l 1 joint, those clips llfl sillg portions projecting v inwardly over the upper edges of liinoe: I 10, a curved rod, preferahly circular in cross section, lying: within the inner crimp at each sling entirely around Within the liunic and pi ahore the edges of the flame and under the inw: d projections of bolts engaging; supports (3 and serving as means to]: 'tm-cing the down into the crimps and thus c over-lapping ends the 5..
tightly "tween the 1 no the i smldlrs ips formed on the inward ejecting around the inner portions of the ends of the curved rods.
The Home is quite independent of the rods, but the rods, When forced down tightly by the clips, serve in making the joints tight, the bolts. which draw the clips down serving at the same time to bind the saddles tightly to the timbers 6.
' Under certain conditions of distortion of liinnesections or of the curved rods, due to inaccurate Worln'nanship or to careless handling during shipping, the ends of the curved rods might be disinclined to retain proper position under the ciips. The caps 12 insure the ends of the rods being held in correct position.
1. A. finnic comprising, supports at the sides of the fiunie, saddles disposed at each joint in the home and curved to fit the exterior of the flame and having their ends connected with said supports, a metallic gutter resting its joints in said saddles,
curved rods disposed within the gutter at each joint and over the saddles, clips secured to said supports at each side of the gutter at each joint and having inward projections engaging over the ends of said curved rods, and means for drawing said clips downwardly, combined substantially as set forth.
2. A flunio comprising, supports at. the sides of the ilunie, saddlesdisposed at each joint-in tho flunie and curved to fit the exterior of the llmne and. having their ends connected with said supports, a metallic gutter resting its joints in said saddles, curved rods disposed within the gutter at each joint andoverthe saddles, clips secured to said supports at each side of the gutter at each joint and having inward projections engaging over the ends of said curpcd rods, means for drawing said clips doivnmtrdly, and caps termed on the inward projections of said clips and engaging around the ends of therods, combined substantially as set forth.
3. A timno comprising, nictallic gutterscctions with overlapping ends to form joints, a saddle disposed under each joint and having outwzu'dly projecting ends, a curved rod disposed within the gutter Over each joint and having ends projecting above the edges of the gutter, clips ovcr lying, the outwardly 'n'ojocting ends of the saddles and engaging the ends oi the rods,
supported by the saddles bolts serving to draw the clips and the ends of the saddles toward each other, and supports for the outer ends of the saddles, combined substantially as set forth.
4. A flume comprising, metallic guttersections with over-lapping ends to form joints, a saddle disposed under each joint and having outwardly projecting ends, a
curved rod disposed Within the gutter over each joint and havig its ends projecting above the edges of the gutter, clips overlying the outwardly projecting ends of the WILLIAM M. REYNOLDS.
