To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONARD L. WEST- LING, of Pittsburg, in the-county of Allegheny and State o f Pennsylvania, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases for Ice-Cream Cones; and I hereby4 declare that the following is .a full, clear, and exact description fthereof, reference being .had to the accompanyii'ig drawings, which form part of this This invention relates to means for pack- I ing fragile articles in bulk for transport;

The articular 'object'of the invention is to provide means for packing large quantities of such cones-in small space and in such manner ythat they. will not be injured in transport. 'lhe package comprises an outer box, a `series of tiers of troughs and `covers therefor. vThe trou hs in 4each tier are made of a one-piece b ank scored and 4 .cut in such manner that it can be readily bent into shape to form a4 series of parallel troughs as hereinafter explained, and-whereby the package containing same shall be thoroughly braced in all directions; so that the box can be made of ordinary paste-board if desired.

I will nowdescribethe invention in detail as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show one practical embodiment thereof, as used to transport ice-cream cones.

In said drawings :-.-Figure 1 is a top plan View of a'package with the box top and the cover 'of top tier of troughs broken away.

The package comprises a box l, which may be of any` desired material and size according to the number of cones it is intended to contain; and is provided with a removable topl la. The boxand top may be of an desiredmaterial being indicated as if ma e of veneer or pasteboard.

As's'hown in the drawings the box is of a size to carry eight dozen, or more cones;

card-board which is shown flat or in blank form in Fig. 3; and as partly bent in Fig. 4; and-as fully bent into shape in Fig. 2.

The trough-blank 2 is of a Width equal to one diameter of the box, and of a length approximately equal to three or more times the other diameter of the box, in the example shown; its length however' dependingV upon the number and cross-sectionlsize of the troughs to be formed thereby. Said blank is scored on its under side as indicated at 251, and on its upper'side as indicated at 2b in Fig. 3, so that it can be folded upwardly along the scores 2' and folded downwardly along the scores 2b; when so folded the blank forms a series of connected parallel U-shaped troughs 3, see Figs. 2- and 4. The outermost folds 2 of the blank being parallel with and fitting close against the. sides of the box 1. The. blank 2 as thus scored, may be said to be divided into two outer or end portions 3; four parallel portions 3, one between each adjacent pair of scores 2 and adapted to form the bottoms of the troughs; and six parallel portions 3b adjacentthe scores 2l as indicated in Fig. 4; and drenthe blank is properly folded or bent the adjacent parts 3* will close together and stand parallel with the parts 3a and each other; and the pai'ts 3 will form the bottoms of the troughs, while the parts 3b form partitions therebetween. One of these trough-blanks properly folded` is placed within the bottom of the box and divides it into a series of parallel troughs, a'nd in each 4Ll of such cover being scored as indicated' at 4b in Fig. 5 so they can be bent down over the upper edges of the side pieces 3 -of the 'outer troughs, and thus serve to 'stiften the latter. A second trough-blank is then folded and placed on top of the cover 4, then filled with conesas described, and covered by another cover 4. x r.lhe box is filled in this'way by tiers of troughs and covers 4 until it is full. In order to enable a greater number of cones to be placed in a box I make the alter- 4nate partitions 3" of diiferent lengths; this is easily done by cutting out portions of the blank, at the ends of alternate scores 2", as indicated at 2c in the drawings, so that when the blank is folded the alternate partitions 3b will be shorter than the intermediate partitions, as shown in Figs. l and 4. This enables me to place more cones in the box; as additional cones C can be inserted at these cut-away portions, .said cones C being set oppositely to the cones in the adjacent rows and being braced by and in' turn bracing the latter as shown in Fig. 1.

troughsand covers as described. The sizeof the box can be varied to suit the'number of articles it is intended to contain and of course the size of the trough-blanks will be varied according to the size and number of troughs that are to be formed thereby.

It will be seen that in thispackage each row of cones is kept separate; and that the cover between the troughs of cones is scored and bent over the edges of the outer troughs so that they cannot get out of place.

Each tier of troughs being formed of one sheet of material has more carrying power and is more rigid when folded than it would be if formed of separate U-shaped' pieces. The trough-blanks being cut and scored as described can be muchmore easily handled and put in position than if the troughs were formed of separate pieces. When used for ice-cream cones the latter shouldv be individually Wrapped in waxed paper so as to keep them air-tight and at the same time assist in protecting them from injury by shock if the box should be tossed about.

lVhileLhave described the box as specially adapted for carrying ice-creamfcones it can be used for other fragile articles.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettersl Patent thereon is:

1. A transport package for ice-cream allel troughs therein composed of a blank scored onopposite sides and then bent along the scores into a series'of parallel U-shaped troughs, said blank being cut so that the alternate partitions between the troughs will cones, etc., comprising'a box, a series of parbe of different lengths, and a top for the box.

2. A transport package for ice-cream cones etc. comprising a box, a series of parallel troughs therein composed of a blank scored on opposite sides and then bent 'along troughs,said blankbeing cut. so that the alternate partitions between the troughs will be of different lengths, and a cover for said troughs having its side edges bent down vover the outer sides of the outermost troughs within the box; and a top for the box..
