To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS PHILIP ELL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 698 Jackson street, Test New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Riding-Saddles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to riding saddles in general, but more particularly to womens saddles, and has for its principal objects to enable the rider or the saddle man to have a clear unobstructed view and access to the saddlestraps and also to provide means for keeping the flaps locked and closed after being used.

My invention, by which I attain these objects, comprises novel means for swinging open the hinged saddleflaps and holding them open while adjusting the saddlestraps and girths and also for keeping and holding the flaps locked shut after using, and these objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,--

Figure 1 represents in side view a womans saddle embodying my invention, with the saddlefiap swung open to show the hinged saddle flap device. Fig. 2 shows the same view of the womans saddle, but with the hinged saddle flap device closed and locked. Fig. 3 shows a cross sectional view of the saddleflap hinge illustrating the opening mechanism.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In Fig. 1 BF is the metal hinge arm whose end receives the coiled spring D and the metal hinge fasteners C C. The leather fiap E is fastened on the hinge arm BF and the hinge fasteners C C are riveted to the saddletree frame. The hinge arm BF has at its free end F a pocket F to receive and hold a locking bolt K when the flap is swung shut and closed. The locking bolt K is fastened to a metal button A and is held in a metal pocket securely fastened to the saddletree frame. On the hinge arm BF is fastened a short metal blade B for holding the flap E in shape.

In Fig. 2 is seen the saddle flap E closed and locked with the locking bolt button A protruding through the saddle covering.

In Fig. 3, the hinge blade BF at its ends I I contains a coiled wire wound opening spring D. The hinge fasteners G C, the hinge blade ends I I and the wire wound spring are held together by means of a rivet pin passed through the component parts of the hinge.

In Fig. 2, the rider or saddleman pushes the locking bolt button A to release the flap E from the locking bolt K. This done, the saddletlap E is swung open on the hinged end by the spring I) as shown in Fig. 1, thus giving the clear view and access to the straps G and the girths H II II. After adjusting the girths H and straps G, the rider or saddleman swings the saddleflap E shut and the flap E is kept shut and locked by the sliding bolt K entering the pocket F on the hinge arm BF. The hinge is riveted securely to the saddleframe by means of rivets passed through the hinge fasteners G C at the holes J J.

I am aware that prior to my invention, saddle flap retainers have been made with blade and flaps operating vertically. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly, but

I claim,

1. The combination of a saddlefran'ie having fastened thereto a metal hinge-arm at the front end and a locking bolt at the rear end, a saddleflap fastened rigidly to the swinging metal. hinge arm and a metal pocket fastened on the end of said swinging metal hinge arm to engage the locking bolt, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a saddleframe having a metal hinge containing a coiled wire spring, one hinge arm of said metal. hinge being fastened to the frontend of said saddle frame and a lock belt at the rear end of said saddle frame, a saddle flap fastened rigidly on the free swinging hinge arm of said metal hinge and opening forwardly, and a metal pocket fastened on the free end of said swinging hinge arm to receive the said lock bolt, substantially as described.
