Application filed September 28, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Serial No. 520,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lltiAX RUBIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment buckles and more particularly to improvements in that class of such buckles in which the back of the buckle is covered by a portion of the webbing on which the buckle is held, thus protecting the buckle from perspiration and also protecting the garments from being soiled by coming in contact with the buckles.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved buckle of this kind which is simple in construction, strong and durable and by means of which a firm and unslipping grip is secured upon the webbing without any danger of tearing the latter.
1n the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures; one construct-ion of my buckle is shown and in these drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the buckle on the web. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a: a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the buckle partly open. Fig. 1 is a back view of the buckle closed. Fig. 5 is an end view of the buckle open. Fig. 6 is a back view of the buckle closed. Fig. 7 is a View of the blank from which the lever of the buckle is stamped.
The buckle is composed of two parts, namely the front of lever part 1 and the back or plate 2 and this buckle is to be applied on a suitable web 3. The two parts 1 and 2 are hinged together by means of hinge pintles 4 formed on the plate 2 and extending into or through suitable holes or sockets 5 formed at the ends of the front or lever portion, in a manner to be described.
The front or lever part 1 is provided with a thumb piece or finger piece 6 projecting from the bottom edge of the front prefer ably at the center and this thumb piece may be of any suitable shape or design or finish. The upper edge part of the front or edge part 1 is bent over toward the rear and then downward at the rear face of the front 1 and substantially parallel therewith as at for a distance a little less than the width of the opening in the back of the buckle and this portion 7 bent down at the back is a short distance from the rear face of the front or lever part, and then the free edge of the bent over part 7 is bent substantially at right angles toward and against the rear face of the front or lever part 1, to form a shoulder 8 on the rear face of said front or lever part, which shoulder 8 extends parallel with the top edge of said front or lengthwise of the front. The ends 9 of the bent over portion 7 are also bent substantially at right angles against the rear face of the front or lever portion so as to form continuous unbroken reinforced ends and by bending these ends the sockets 5 are formed for the reception of the hinge pintles. The shoulder S is provided with one or more openings 10 having end edges 11.
The back 2 is provided with a longitudinal opening 12 through which the web 3 is passed as for example shown in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that one layer of this web rests upon the upper edge of the bottom part 13 of the back as at a and a second layer of web Z) rests upon the layer a and there will thus be two layers of web between the shoulder 8 and the upper edge of the bottom part 13. This upper edge of the bottom part 13 is provided ith a projection 14 slightly shorter from end to end than the opening 10, in the shoulder 8 from end to end directly opposite said opening.
When the lever or plate 2 is turned or pressed down upon the face of the outer web as shown in Fig. 2 the projection 1 1 forces portions of the web upward and portions of the upper layer Z) will be forced more or less into the opening 10 and thus part of the web will engage and bind on the ends of the opening 10 thus giving a firm and non-slipping grip. lVhen the lever 2 is raised the portion Z) of the web can be passed freely through the opening 12 in the back 2 and adjusted as may be desired and then locked by turning down the lever or front 1.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A two piece buckle composed of a lever portion and back plate hinged thereto, the lever portion having its upper part bent over at the rear face of the lever to extend downward a short distance and then bent substantially at right angles to said rear face of the lever, thereby forming a hollow at the back of the lever and also forming a shoulder at the rear face of the lever, which shoulder extends lengthwise of said lever and which shoulder is provided with an opening, the back plate being provided in its upper edge with a projection opposite said opening, and the back plate being provided with hinge pins at its ends and the lever portion being provided with continuous unbroken reinforced ends formed by turning over the lever plate at the ends of the shoulder said ends having apertures for the reception of the hinge pins, substantially as set forth.
2. A two piece buckle composed of a lever 15 portion and back provided with hinge pins,l
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for the two parts being hinged together, the lever portion being provided with continuous unbroken reinforced ends formed by turning over the lever plate upon its back along its edge and at the ends, said ends having 20 MAX RUBIN.
