Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES G. DALY and CHARLES K. Moonn, citizens of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in drinking fountains for use in schools, theaters, public halls and other places where large crowds congregate; and an object of this invention is to provide a drink ing fountain which will prove sanitary in use and from which a drink may be conveniently taken without the use of a cup or similar receptacle.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and the best mode now known to us of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a central vertical section through our new drinking fountain; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the upper part of the latter and shows the mound-shaped form of the water at the outlet; Fig. 3 is a detail which shows a modified form of the mounting of the hubshaped distributer; and Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing a modified form of the distributer.
The fountain casing a is formed with a ring-shaped flange or floor-plate Z) through which pass the lag-screws 0 (or other suitable fastening devices) to secure the casing in position in the floor (Z. A union or pipeconnection 0 serves to connect the lower end of the casing a to the waste-pipe f. To the upper end of the casing is screwed the catch-basin g provided with a foraminous grating-h which serves as a bottom for the catch-basin.
The water-pipe i is supported by the union 6 and is connected by the elbow j to the inlet pipe 72 on top of which is screwed a cap m. On the latter is mounted a ring a which carries the lower member 0 of the spout or fountain-head p. The mouth portion or upper member Q of the spout p is connected to the lower part 0 by a common lap-joint, as is shown at 0, but, of course, itmay be screwed to the lower part or otherwise suitably fastened thereto.
In the ring a is mounted a shaft 8 the outer end of which is squared to fit a wrench or key (not shown) by which the shaft 8 may be turned. In the spout p floats an egg-shaped or bulbous regulator or distributer 5 to the lower end of which is connected one end of a coil spring a the other end of which is connected by a cord 22 to the shaft 8. By turning the latter after the manner of a Windlass, the cord is wound up or paid out so as to position properly the distributer 2 The position of the latter is adjusted so that the water will rise in the form of a mound to at the discharge end of the fountain (Fig. 2). The springu may be omitted; or, as shown in Fig. 3, the-lower end of a spring a may be connected to a cross-pin a: mounted in the ring a. If so desired, the distributer L" may be. formed with corrugations 25 which permit the flow of the water, the distributer t not being anchored (Fig. 4t). The formation of a mound w of water at the fountainhead conduces greatly to convenience in drinking therefrom. Of course, the form of distributer t shown in Figs. f and 5 may, if so desired, be used in the construction shown in Fig. l in place of the distributer t.
We claim:
1. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a. fountain casing; an inlet waterpipe; a fountain-head connected with the latter and mounted on said casing; and a distributer of eg -shaped form which is mounted in said fountain-head and which causes the water to rise therefrom in the form of a mound.
2. A. drinking fountain having, in combination, a fountain-casing; an inlet water-pipe which is mounted therein; a fountain-head carried by said water-pipe; and a distributor which is mounted free to rise and fall in said. fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies and which causes the water to rise therefrom in the form of a mound.
3. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a fountain-casing; an inlet waterpipe which is mounted therein; a fountainhead carried by said water-pipe; and an egg-shaped distribiiter which is mounted free to rise and fall in said fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies and which causes the water to rise therefrom in the form of a mound.
4. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a fountain-casing; an inlet waterpipe which is mounted therein; a fountainhead carried by said water-pipe; a distributer which is mounted free to rise and fall in said fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies and which causes the water to rise therefrom in the form of a mound; and yielding means by which said distributer is anchored within said fountain-head.
5. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a fountain-casing; an inlet waterpipe which is mounted therein; a fountainhead carried by said water-pipe; a distributer which is mounted free to rise and fall in said fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies and which causes the water to rise therefrom in the form of a mound; and mechanism for adjusting the position of said distributer in said fountain-head.
6. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a fountain casing; an inlet waterpipe which is mounted therein; a fountainhead carried by said water-pipe; a distributer which is mounted in said fountainhead; and mechanism for adjusting the position of said distributer in said fountainhead.
7. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a water-supply pipe; a fountain-head mounted thereon; a distributer which is mounted free to rise and fall in said fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies; and mechanism for adj usting the position of said distributer in said fountainhead.
8. A drinking fountain having, in combination, a water-supply pipe; a fountainhead mounted thereon; an egg-shaped distributer which is mounted free to rise and fall in said fountain-head as the velocity of the stream varies and which causes the water to rise from said fountain-head in the form of a mound; and mechanism for adjusting the position of said distributer in said fountain-head.
