To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEsT P. HAPPIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Safety Catch for Brooches, Breastpins, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a safety catch or snap for the pin of a breast pin, brooch or similar article of jewelry, the construction and operation of the same being hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claims.

For the purpose of explaining my invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a breast pin, etc, having a safety catch or snap embodying my invention applied thereto, said catch being in dilferent positions in the two figures. Fig. 3 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a perspec tive view of a portion of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :--A designates a bar which may be the body of a breast pin, brooch or the like. B designates a pin which is connected with one end of said bar and has its point portion adapted to engage with the hook member C. On the other end of said bar, at the base of the member 0 is the ear D which in the present case is a piece continuous of said member and bent into U- shape forming the means by which the memher is connected with the bar A.

E designates a safety catch or snap composed of the limbs F G forming an elbow lever with which is connected the eye member H, which is fitted between the sides of said ear and mounted thereon by means of the pivot J which is passed through said member and ear and having its ends headed on the exterior of the latter whereby it is firmly connected with said ear, and forms an aXis for said snap, it being noticed that said pivot J is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the bar, whereby the limb Gr is adapted to engage with the under edge or wall K of Specification of Letters Patent.

the hook member C, and the limb F is adapted to bear against the outer edge or end L of said member C, it being noticed also that the edge or wall K is somewhat slant or inclined downwardly from the outer edge or end L of said member 0 to the inner edge or wall thereof.

The operation is as follows :The snap is thrown down and the point of the pin inserted under the hook member G through the usual throat or passage M. The snap is then thrown up, whereby the limb Gr contacts with the under edge K of the member C and rides down the incline thereof wedging and tightening itself against the same. The limb Fnow contacts with the outer edge L of said member G and closes the outer opening of the latter, whereby the point of the pin is covered and guarded from possible contact of a garment or hand, and the pin prevented consequently from movement toward the throat or passage, while the limb Gr closes the latter from below so that should the pin be subjected to pressure toward the bar A, its point portion will be barricaded by said limb G, and so the pin cannot pass through the throat or passage M and be opened, while dirt, dust, etc, are prevented from entering the hook from without, see Figs. 1 and 3. Sh0uld,however, a finger nail be applied to the limb F and superior power exerted on the same in outward direction, the snap will be moved from the hook member, the limb G disengaging itself from the edge K of said member when the snap clears the latter as shown in Fig. 2. The point portion of the pin may now be pressed through the throat or passage M as usual to adapt the pin to be applied in position or removed therefrom, as usual in breast pins, brooches, etc.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an article of jewelry, a body, a pin,

a hook, a safety catch adapted to close the inlet throat of the hook and to cover the point-portion of the pin to prevent the latter fro-1n emerging from said throat, said catch having means wedgingly engaging the free end of the hook.

2. An article of jewelry having a body, a pin, a hook having a throat, a safety catch adapted to lie flat against and close the outer end of said hook and cover the point of said pin said catch engaging a Wall of said throat to be Wedgingly engaged thereby.

3. An article of jewelry having a body, a pin, and a hook, a safety catch adapted to lie flat against the outer end of the hook and also to close the inlet throat of said hook and having a member at an angle to the closing portion, the Wall of said throat having an inclined portion adapted to be Wedgingly engaged by said angular member.

4t. An article of jewelry having a hook,

and means movably mounted on said hook and adapted to close the inlet of the hook of said article wherein the point portion of the pin is adapted to enter, and to lie flat against and close the outer end of said hook and cover the point of the pin, said movably mounted means constituting a safety catch, and cooperating wedge like portions on said catch and hook members extending length- Wise of the pin for locking said catch.

5. A body, a pin and a hook, in combination With a safety each for the point portion of said pin composed of an angular member which is pivotally connected with said body and has one limb adapted to close the inlet throatof said hook and another limb adapted to lie flat against and close the out-er end of said hook, said hook and angular member having cooperating Wedgeshaped portions for locking the safety catch.
