Description

C, a block or punch,-F. 4
N etica (eine @anni @wie Letters Patent No. 98,550, dated January 4, 1870.
I qvb- IMPROVEMIENTIN MACHINE FOR CUTTING AND PRESSING THE HEADS OI' METAL (LANSV The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN BRADY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Machine for Cutting and Pressing the Heads of Metal Gans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inwhich- Figure 1 represents a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved cutting and pressing-machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional diagram of the head, as cut and pressed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new machine for cutting from large plates the circular heads or end-pieces of sheet-metal cans, and for, at the same time, forming the flanges on the same, both operations heilig performed by one single motionof' the main workinglever.
The invention consists chiefly in the employment of a hollow cutter, and of a punch or presser sliding thereon, the presser being operated by arocking lever, which, during part of its motion, also carries along and moves the cutter. ,l
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of my improved machine.
On it are formed two parallel guides, a d, for a vertical slide, B, which, at its lower end, carricsan annular cutter, C.
The slide B is, hy links b b, connected with a lever,
D, which is pivoted to the frame A, and weighted, at
its rear end, to hold the cutter elevated above the cutting-bed or die E.
Through the slide B is fitted aver-tical rod, c, which carries, at its lower end and within the hollowcntter The upper end of' the rodv c is, by linksd d, connected with a lever,l G, that is pivoted to the frame A, above the lever D.
The rear end'of the lever G extends further backthan that of D. y
H is a bar, pvotcd, near its upper end, to the back part of the lever G, the upper end being drawn forward by a spring, c.
A catch or shonlder, f, is formed on the ylever H. When bot-h the cutter and the. punch are-drawn up, the rear ends of the levers D G are lowered, and the catch f fits under the back 'end ofthe lever D. y
When the machine is to operate, a plate of sheetmetal is placed upon the die, and then the rear end of' the lever G is swung up, the catch f drawing the lever D along. The latter motion will canse the cutter to descend toward and cut o'ut of the plate on the die a circular piece.
As soon as the cutter has performed its work, the
catch f slips ofi' the lever D, and the latter, by the weight on its rear end, draws `the cutter up ont of th way.
The lever G, in the mean time, continues to move,l and serves gradually to' force the presser upon the circular piece out out by the cutter, and to turn up the edge g of the same, as in fig. 3.
Thus, by one motion of the lever G, both the cutting and pressing-operations are performed.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The lever D, holding the annular cutter, in combination with the bar H and lever G, which holds the internal presser F, all arranged to operate as set forth.
2. The levers D G, so arranged that theyY will be automatically connected and disconnected during their motion, as specified. Y
3. The. bar H and 'catch f, arranged to arrest the cutting-lever, while the punching-lever remains in action, as set forth. REUBEN BRADY.
