CHARLES A. BERTSCII, OF CAMBRIDGE CITY, INDIANA.
S'TEAIVI PUNCHING AND SHEARING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,103, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed February 18, 1895. Serial No. 538,774. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES A. BEErsoH, of Cambridge City, lVayne county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Punching and Shearing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to machines for punching and shearing metals by the direct application of steam-power, and it will be readily understood from the following description ,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a punching and shearing machine embodying my improvement; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same as viewed from the right-hand end of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a plan at the central portion of the machine, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the steam-cylinder.
In the drawings, A indicates the general horizontal bed of the punching and shearing machine, supported by proper legs; B, the housing or body of the punching-machine portion, supporting the usual punch-ram; C, the housing or body of the shearing-machine portion, the punch-body and shear-body being arranged back to back; D, a lever pivoted to the punch-body and engaging the punch-ram and projecting rearwardly over the space in- -tervening between the punch-body and the shear-body; E, the shear-blade and its stock, pivoted at its inner end to the shear-body inwardly beyond the inner extremity of the usual throat with which the shear-body is provided, this shear-blade cooperating with the usual stationary shear-blade secured to the lower jaw of the shear-body; F, a link connected to and reaching upward from the outer end of the shear-stock E; G, a lever pivoted to the shear-body and having its outward end connected with the upper end of link F, its inner end projecting inwardly over the space between the punch-body and the shear-body and overlapping the inwardlyprojecting end of punch-lever D; H, a steamcylinder vertically disposed upon the bed of the machine in the space interveningbetween the punch-body and shear-body, the cylinder coming below the overlapping ends of the two levers; I, the valve for controlling the admission and exhaust of steam into and out of the cylinder below the piston; J, the piston-rod of the cylinder, projecting upwardly and being properly guided and having articulate connection with the inner ends of the two levers D and G; K, a roller free to turn on a stud projecting from the face of the punch-body over the heel of the shear-stock E, that heel being concentrically rounded and engaging under the periphery of the roller, whereby the strain at the heel of the shearstock is distributed between the pivot-pin on which the stud rocks and the stud on which the roller turns; L, a hole farther forward in the shear-body and adapted to receive the stud of roller K and thus support that roller in a new position, there being also a hole in the shear-body below hole L to receive the pivot-pin of the shear-stock in a correspondingly new position, the intention being that for certain classes of special work a short shear-stock may be used with its heel pivoted in this new outer position; M, a holddownbar properly guided by the shear-body along the outer side of the shear-stock; N, a handlever pivoted to the shear-body above but forward of the center of the holddown-bar and connected thereto by a link, so that the lever may be employed in raising and lowering the holddown-bar; C, a spring connected at its upper end with the lever N and at its lower end with the inner end of the holddownbar, the tendency of this spring being, therefore, to pull up on the inner end of the holddown-bar, and by pulling on the hand-lever pull up on the entire bar, thus avoiding the tendency of one end of the bar to stick or lag or stay down when the bar is lifted by an intermediately-attached link which cannot con- .trol both ends of the bar with certainty; P,
a throated block, with its lower member secured to the lower jaw of the shear-body and with its upper member secured to the upper jaw of the shear-body; and Q, a squaringgage, lying across the table with which the lower jaw of the shear-body is provided, this gage being secured to the table by having a downwardly-projecting port-ion bolted to the front edge of the table.
The operation of the steam-piston gives working motion simultaneously to the punchram and to the shear-stock. The shear-body is of that well-known oset character which IOO permits the slitting of sheets of indefinite length, one portion of the slit sheet deleeting down under and past the steam-Cylinder and punch-body. The bloek I" gives strength to the deeply-throated punch-body and, by reason of its own throat, permits of the slitting of Wide sheets.
I claim as my inventionl. In a shearing-machine, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a sheztrbody, L shear-stock pivoted thereto and havin g a coneentrieztlly-rounded heel, and t roller mounted on a fixed stud on the shear-body and hfwing its periphery engaging over said rounded heel.
2. In a shearing-machine, the combination, substantially as set forth, of t shear-body, zt shear-stock, it holddoWn-bitr supported by end guides upon the shear-body, n holddownlever pivoted to the shear-body over an intermediate portion of said holddoWn-bar, n link connecting said lever and holddoWn-bitr, and a spri ng extending from said lever to near one end of the holddoWn-bar.
3. In et shearing-machine, the combination, substantially as set forth, of zt throated shearbody, a shear-blade carried by the lower jmv thereof, an upper shear-blade mounted for movement on the upper jaw of the body, and zt throated block projecting at right angles from the shear-body and having its upper and lower members secured to the upper and lower jaws respectively of said body.
