Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1911.
Application filed March 28, 1910. Serial No. 551,906.
To all whom it may concern: l
vBe it known that I, lViLnEn'r M. BEAN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at. Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented ce1.
tain new and useful Improvements in find- Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a windshield for motor vehicles, n'iy object being to provide a simple and inexpensive device which will be 'efficient and useful.
In the accon'ipanying drawii'igs, which illustrate niy invention, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line {tt-3 ot' Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to these figures, I provide a vehicle A, such as an automobile, with a supporting strip 2 secured upon the forward end ot' its body proper, that is in'nnediately to the rear of its hood or bonnet l, said strip being semi-circular in forni with its ends projecting rearwardly, to receive thereon the similarly shaped body 3 ot' the windshield, .which body has an outwardly flared upper portion so that the air currentsl striking the saine are deiiected outwardly and downward. Projecting' upwardly and centrally from the body 3 is a rod G which supports the upper semi-circular section 7, the lower tapering ends of which are attached to the endsl of said body. This section 7, as shown, is transversely inclined rearwardly and upwardly and provides a space 5 between itand the body 3. The section 7 has also a Copies of this patent may be obtained for series of buttons 8 or like attaching Ineans extending along' its rear edge and along the ends of the body 3. Extending upwardly, and inclined inwardly, from the upper edge of the bod)7 3 is a strip et which acts to deflect t-he air currents, through opening 5, upwardly' and over the heads of the occupants of the vehicle. The body 3 and upper section '7 may be composed of frames covered with suitable material and may have transparent sections 3 and 7a respectively. l may also provide side aprons 9 of a substantially triangular shape, to button on to the side of the vehicle body and the rear buttons of the body 3 of the wind-shield.
19 are inetal braces which serve to hold the lshield rnily to the top of the car.
At the rear of the vehicle is a top or cover ltwhich is adapted to be extended forwardly and buttoned to the buttons 8 of the upper section 7 of the windshield.
l claim:
A wind-shield comprising a lower senii circular body having its upper edge flared outwardly.' an upper section connected to and spaced from said body to provide an opening therebetween, said section having tapering ends curved downwardly to the ends of the body, and an upwardly and inwardly projecting air-deflecting strip secured to the upper edge of said body.
In testimony whereof I aX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
