To all whom it may concern;
,Be it known that I, JOHN S. BEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Entriken, in the county of Huntingdon, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to motors and more particularly to the class of water power wheels.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this character in which the power wheel is formed with a plurality of buckets adapted to receive water from a chute, the same being provided with a discharge opening disposed forwardly of the axis of rotation of the water wheel and which opening is adapted to deliver a sheet of water only to a single bucket successively one after the other for effecting the rotation of the water Wheel whereby the rotary movement may be utilized as motive power for driving machinery or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a water wheel of the character described in which a stream of water is conveyed from above the wheel into a series of buckets disposed peripherally of the wheel, the buckets being so shaped as to permit the egress of air on the entrance of water therein thus enabling each bucket to receive a supply of water to its fullest capacity whereby a constant and uniform rotation will be imparted to the wheel by the power of force of the Water and its weight so that the rotary movement of the Wheel may be utilized as motive power.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this character in which the general construction and ar rangement of parts are materially improved over apparatus of this class and that may be manufactured at a minimum expense.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flume and water wheel constructed in accordance with the invention. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the flume and water wheel. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate-corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 designates a forwardly inclined fiunie or chute having vertical side walls 6, a bottom 7 extended a considerable distance beyond the forward closed end 8 which is of the same depth as the side walls 6 and slightly inclined rearwardly of the flume. At a distance removed from the closed end of the fiume 5 is a cross bar 9 and to this bar and the upper edge of the end 8 are connected a plurality of spaced slats 10 to permit an overflow of water when rushing through the flume.
Disposed below the fiume at its forward end is a rotary water wheel comprising a hub 11 fixed to a shaft 12, the hub having fixed to its opposite ends outwardly extending radial spokes 13 the same bein secured at their outer ends to annular sides 14 disposed at opposite side edges of a cylinder 15 which latter is joined to the sides 14 by means of flange rings 16 secured to the inner faces of the said cylinder and sides. Centrally secured to the inner face of the cylinder 15 is a ring member 17 the same being formed with a central flange 18 to which are secured a plurality of diagonally disposed brace bars 19 the latter being also secured to the spokes 13. The cylinder 15 is formed from a single piece of material bent to provide a series of pockets 20 between the sides 14:, each pocket formed with an outwardly bowed or curved front Wall 21 so as to extend a considerable distance over the pockets 20 and through the outer ends of these Walls 21 are passed transverse bolts 22 which latter also engage the sides 14 to prevent operation thereof.
The outer free edges of the sides 1d are inbent to form inwardly directed angularly disposed flanges 23 throughout the entire periphery of the water wheel, theshaft 12 supporting the wheel is journaled in any i suitable bearings and on the rotation of the water wheel the motion thereof is transmitted from the shaft 12 to which thewheel is fixed to machinery or other mechanisms and in this manner the water power may be power n dr1v1ng machinery or of any desirable size so that a sheet stream of water may be'delivered to only-onebucket at a time when the water in the flunieis being discharged through the said port. The port 24 in the bottom of the flume 5 is V a'plate 27 provided on its upper face with spaced parallel toothedracks 28 meshing with gear wheels 29 fixed to a. horizontal adjacent the fiume, the shaft 33 being proshaft 30 'journaled horizontally in the flume 5 and having its bearings int-beside walls 6 thereof. To; one end of this shaft- 30 is fixed a beveledpinion 31 meshing with a further pivoted pinion 32 secured to a vertical turning shaft 33 suitably supported from a wall vided with a turning wheel 34 having the usual crank 35 for manual manipulation.

It is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clear and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
In the sides 14 are provided ports 36 co1nmunicating with each pocket 20 and these ports are normally closed by slides 37 each containing slots 38 in which are engaged the guide pins 39 mounting the slides on the outer faces of the sides 14 of the water wheel, whereby theymay be shifted to open or close the ports-36. The slides are provided with openings correspondingly shaped to the ports 36 so that when the said slides are movedthese openings 40 will register with the ports 36 thus permitting the pockets to be drained or to permit the escape of air therefrom when water enters the pocket.
What isclaimed is 1. In a power mechanism, a water wheel having sides spaced from each other and a cylinder disposed between the sides and formed with inbent portions constituting 2. A water wheel comprising spaced sides, and a cylinder disposed between the sides and secured thereto and formed with inbent portions constituting buckets, and means for holding the buckets spaced from each other.
