OF AKRON, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO.
BUCKLE-SHIELD.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 21, 1911.
Application led March 18, 1910. Serial No. 550,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ERNEST A. PFLUnGEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Buckle-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shields for covering and protecting as well as ornamenting the buckles of harness, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in 'the construction of the same as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a top plan viev7 of my improved shield applied to a strap and covering a buckle. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of my improved shield.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
ln the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the tongue, and 2 the front cross bar of a harness buckle of ordinary construction, the saine being attached to a strap l and passing through a second strap 4l in the usual manner. Removably mounted upon said strap 11 in such manner as to cover the, buckle tongue 1 is my improved shield, the same embodying a body portion having side edges turned downward at 6, and at one end slotted at 7 and formed at the front edge of said slot into a depressed cross bar 8 adapted to lie beneath the said strap i when in position, as shown in Fig. 2. At its other end said shield is turned under at 9 to forma bearing for a loop 10, through which the strap l passes, said loop being stopped from turning toward the body of the shield by contact of said loop with the downturned side portions 6 of said shield, as best seen in Fig. 3. I form the body portion 5 of the shield centrally with two concentric elevations, 11, 12, the central and smaller one 12 being raised above the surface of 11, as shown, the object of said projections, which form what may be termed a double dome, being to receive the buckle tongue 1, to strengthen the body portion 5 of the shield and prevent it from being dented, and to improve the attractive design of the body of the shield.
My improved shield because of its form can be utilized with vertical as well as horizontal straps with equal facility, and on account of its shallow surfaces and corners can be readily cleaned and kept free from ac oumulation of dirt. By connecting the loop 10 in such manner as to project below the body of the shield I prevent any possible chating or scraping of t-he strap 4 by contact with the edges or sides of the shield, and this is also true of the bar 8, which by being depressed permits the passage of the strap 4 without scraping.
By preventing the loop 10 from turning in toward the body of the shield as described I provide that the strap while being inserted will not be cramped or bound by said loop, as would be the case if said loop were permitted to turn toward the edge of the shield.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A buckle shield, embodying a body portion having its side edges turned down, and a loop pivoted to said body portion at one end and adapted to contact with said side edges to prevent said loop from folding toward said body portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST A. PFLUEGER.
Witnesses L. W. Gnirrrrris, F. W. CASTLE.
