PATENT canton.
' HAMMER.
of Texas, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in- Hammers, of which the following a specification.
This invention is-an improvement in ha1nlners and has for an object to provide a simple, novel construction whereby the hammer head may he secured to the handle in such manner that the head cannot fly off the .'handle and this is effected by constructing the hammer head with a laterally opening dove-tail or under-cut recess with itssmaller end'open and leading from the lower side of the head, and forming, the handle with a "head fitting said recess and Secured'themm as wlll be more fully described; and the in- 0 ventionconsists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts ass-"gill be hereinafter described and claimed. v
In the drawing Figurel is a side view of a hannner ei'nbodying my invention, the
handle being in place and the cover plate beiug removed. Fi a longitudinal see- ,tion'on about line 2-2 of'l ig. 1, the cover plate being in place. Fig. 3 is a cross section (in-about line 3-3 of Fig. '1, the cover plate being in place. -Fig. 4, is afdetail per spectiy'e new of the lulmnuzrhead, the cover plate and handle heing, omitted. The halmner head A which may he of an desired form or design,- is shown as provided with a clan; A and a headA .In one side ofthe head'is formed the undereut recess B in dove-tail shape with its lower smaller and ll opening at the lower side of the head, and surruulnling the outer 4 face of the (love-tail recess form a rahhet 5 (l with undercut edges to receive the cover plate I) when the latter is slid to position as shown iuFigs. 2 and 3 of the drawing;
The handleE has a dove-tail head F coil 4-5 formed to and adapted to'he inserted-luter ally in the undercut recess 13 of the hammerfl Specification of Letters Patent.

head when the parts are applied for use as shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3. When the handle is so placed in the head. the cover plate 1) is slid into the ruhhet l3 and secured by screws- D or in other suitable manner.
For convenience. the thumb nick 17- may he foi'n'lcd in the cmer plate D to t':.1cilitate its ren'ioval for replacing the handle or for other pin-pnsrsas may he drsiri-d.
W'hrn the handle applied as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the head .raunot come oil until the cover plate is removed to permit the handle to he slim'ied' laterally out ht its recess.
The construction is simple, can be pro duced at a low initial cost and will etlicicntly serve the purpose for which it is designed.
I claim 1- 1. A hammer head having a laterally opening (lore-tail recess with its smaller end open and leading from the lower side of the head .and having an undercut rahhet surrounding the side opening of said recess. a handle having a dove-tail head fitting the laterally opening recess of thc hammer head. a cover plate slid into the undercut rahhot of the hammer head and over the (love tail head of. the'handlc and means for secxfring the cover plate in position, substantially as set forth.
2. A hammer head having in one dove-tail recess opening laterally and at the inner side of the hammer head and closed at the outer side of the hammer head and having; along its opposite side walls and its inner wall an under-cut ruhhot, a handle having a dove-tail head fitting: the late all}; o 'mning recess in the hamnier head, a cover plate slid into the muler-cut rahhet ot' the lmnuuer-head and over the dove-tail head of the handle and means for securing the cover plate in position.
