a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and 5. S tate of California, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Battery Lamp-Sockets, of which the followingv is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electric lamp sockets and connectors and particularly to portable lamp sockets which are adapted to be connected to the terminals or electrodes of battery cells. a
' The objecti'of my invention is toprovide a portable socket for small electric incandesce'ntlamps which can be secured directly to the binding post terminals of an ordinary battery cell and will serve as a standard for the lamp, the electrical connections being 'r'nade through the standard and an auxiliary terminal secured thereto by means of a flexible connector.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred forms of my invention, in which- I Figural, is an elevation, partly in section of my battery lamp socketand connector showing the manner in which it is secured to the terminals of a battery cell; Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing modified forms of my invention. j Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates the metal tubular shell of the socket whi h is screw-threaded at the upper end to receiive the base of the lamp 2. The shell is provided with means for attachment to one of the binding-post terminals 3, of a battery cell 4, with which it makes electrical contact, an auxiliary terminal. 5, connected 4'0with the socket by means of a flexible connector 6, serving to connect with the other battery terminal or post 7.

is provided with a metal bushing 8, which may be screw-threaded to engage the screwthreads of the terminal post 3, of the battery,'thus furnishing a rigid support for the socket and also, placing the shell of the socket -in electrical contact'with the battery '50 terminal.- Above the bushing 8, is an-inswlatingplug 9, which may be of fiber or other suitable material, in which is embedded the, socket terminal 10, and adapted to contact witl1 the central lamp terminal and to which is soldered or otherwise secured-the flexible Specification of Letters Patent.

In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the shell 1, is lined with a fiber or other insulat-. mg bushing 11, passingthrough the bore of which is a metal tubelQ, which'may be tapered, split or threaded at its lower end to engage the battery post 3, the upper end serving to contact with the central lamp terminal. In this form the shell'l is soldered or otherwise secured to the flexible connector' 6. In Fig. 3, I have shown another modification in which the insulating plug or rod 9 is recessed at the top or may be surrounded by an insulating tube projecting above the head of a stud or screw 13, whichserves to secure the end. of the flexible connector 6, and forms the contact for the central lamp terminal. The terminal connector 5 on the outer end of the flexible connector 6, may be externally insulated by a coating of lacquer or may be surrounded by an insulat ing sleeve of fiber or hard rubber 14. The connector 5",.may be internally tapered, split or threadecl' in order that a firm electrical contact may be secured with the battery post 7'.
It is apparent that various other modificatlons may be made 111 the arrangement of parts withoutdepartingtrom the spirit of my invention, as defined in the appended claims, which provides a compact portable lamp socket and connector that may be car ried in a suitable case in the pocket and can be readily connected tolany of =the.ordinary commercial types of battery cells. Having thus described my invention and the manner of using the same, I claim v 1. An article of manufacture of the class set forth, comprising an outer tubular mem her having a lamp base receiving means, an inner supporting tubular member having: means at one extremity to secure the same to a battery terminal and forming a seat at the other eiidremity for the central terminal of said lamp-base for contacting purposes and an intermediate insulating bushing, a
