To all whom it may concern:

Ilc it known that I, Auccs'r J. Kueuzlune, a citizen of the UnitedStatcs, residing at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Guards for Spring- Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to metallic 'or spring mattresses, and more particularly to side guards therefor, the ob ect of the invention being to provide an improved metallic or spring mattress having an improved side guard eii'ective to prevent the spreading of the stufied mattress and the rolling of the edges thereof over the sides of the mattress, and which side guard will be comparatively simple. in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bedstead,

showing one end of this improved mattress in position thereon: and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of said mattress.

Similar charactersof reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.

The metallic or spring mattress frame usually comprises a pair of side bars 2 and 3,

to each pair of which is secured a transversely extending or cross bar 5 having upright projections or lugs 6, one ateach end thereof. To these transversely extending or cross bars are secured the metallic mattress or bed bottom 7, which may be of any suitable construction, it being shown made up of longitudinally extending members or links 8 connected by transversely extending members or links 9, thus forming a metallic fabric. The ends 0-? the fabric are connected by suitable helical or coiled springs 10 with the transversely extend ng bars 5, thereby to hold the bottom under tension.

the ends of the fabric, the strips thus lying fiatin the same plane as the fabric bottom and forming a part thereof. Located above the strip andconnected with the upstanding projections of the transverse'bars is a suitable cable 14, which may be of any desiredslack, it being stretched under tension in the form shown in Fig. 2 and being held under tension in the'form shown in Fig. 1 by the coiled springs.

To prevent'the sides of the mattress from spreading or being pushed through underneath the cable when the structure is in use, each cable is connected with its fiat metal strip below the same by a series of upright members or wires 15 secured to the cable in any suitable manner, as by being bent around the same, and to the strip in any suitable manner, as by being passed through the openings 12 therein and headed on the underside, or if preferred, these upright. members couni form a part or continuation of the outerrow of transverse links 9.

In practice the side guard will be slightly lower than the height of the stutl'ed mattress, so'that when the latter is compressed the upper edge of the guard will not come above the plane of the stufied mattress.

It will be observed that in Fig. 1 the cables are provided with helical springs at their ends for imparting tension thereto, while the strips or lengthwise extending members below such cables are also provided with independent helical springs at their ends for imparting tension thereto, and that in Fig. 2 the cable is stretched under tension while the strips or lengthwise extending members therebelow have helical springs for imparting lengthwise tension thereto. By reason of the different formation of the lengthwise extending members, one comprising a cable and the other a strip, it may be nece sary that each have a different tension imparted thereto, and the flexible connecting members 15 will not interfere with this.- Moreover the openings in the strip, which are larger than the flexible connecting members 15 will also permit this.

A metallic mattress comprising a bottom and transverse members to which it is connected, said bottom having at each side edge thereof a flat metal strip also connected to said transverse members, a side guard extending along each longitudinal edge of the bottom and connected with said metal strip and comprising a cable connected at intervals with said strip, upstanding projections to which the ends of said cableare attached, and coiled springs for connecting the metal strip with the transverse members.
