JOSEPH LUPPINO, OF RIDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO LUIPINO DAVENPORT` COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DAVENPORT.
Patented Feb. 21, 1911.
. Application filed May 7, 1909. Serial No. 491,602.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it 'known that l, JosnPi-I LUBPiNo, a King of. Italy, residing in Ridgewood, in thecounty of Bergen and State of New Jersey; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.-
This improvement relates to davenports, and more particularly to davenports which can.be converted into a double bed, the object of the invention being to provide an improved davenport which can be used either such or converted into a double bed without the necessity of reversing the back and which is so constructed that both the upholstered seat and back will be protected when the same is in use as a bed. v
A. further object of the invention is -to provide an im-proved davenport comprising aseat section and a back section, the lat-ter malle up of a pair of members or frames adapted to be closed together in an upright y position to forni such back 'or openable into a horizontal position one to rest on the seat. section andthe other to form a bed section at one side or in front of the seat section when the structure is in the form of a double bed.
A -further object of the invention is the provision-of an improved davenport of the port witlrone end frame or character described having in connection therewith a storage receptacle readily accessible when the sti'ucture is in the form of A 35 a davenport.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Flgure l is a perspective View of this improved davenarm' removed,
but showing the guideway carried thereby in dotted lines, the view illustrating the bed'I partly opened; Fig. 2 is an end view of the bed in the same position shown in Fig. l, but with the end frames or arms removed; Fig. 3 is an end View of the davenport with one end frame removed, the view illustrating the davcnport transformed into a double bed; and l "ig. 4 is a view of the structure with the end framesremoved andshowing the seat lifted in order 'to afford access to the storage receptacle.
Similar characters of reference indicate .cori-estima ing` parts throughout. the figures of the drawings. v
In the present embodiment the dav'en'port will usually comprise a pair of end frames or arms 2 between and connected to which is a storage receptacle 3, this connection being obtained in the present instance by angle plates t. The top 5 of this storage receptacle comprises a permanently fixed part G adjacent to -the 'rear thereof and a hinged cover 7. Pivotally secured to this storage receptacle by a pair of'arms or brackets Lit is a. metallic fabric supporting frame S, comprising a pair of end bars 9 and 10 each hav ing at its front a. depending` member l2 resting on a front corner of the storage receptacle. These members 12, as well as the rear ends of the bars S) and 10, are shown connected by braces or side bars 1l and 13 for giving stiffness t-o the seat of the structure.
This fabric supportingfranie 8 may carry. any suitable yielding mattress supporting means, but in the present instance a metallic fabric 16 is shown attached to the end bars 9 and l0 thereof and supports the upliol-1 stercd seat or cushion 17 and thus forms the seat of thedavenport. This seat, owing to its pivotal connection` may be swung upward on the brackets let to permit. access to the storage receptacle, the lid or cover 7 of which is connected by a pair of links 17 with the end bars. S) and 10, whereby as the seat is swung upward or downward the lid or cover of the receptacle is opened or closed. For facilitating the swinging'movement of the seat of the davenport suitable'springs, such as coil springs 18, are connected to the storage receptacle and tothe rear ends of the end bars t) and 10. This seat, however, is
normally stationary, that is it is immovable during the transfer of the structure into either a bed orA adavenport.
rlhe back of the davenport is in the forni of a folding back, and comprises a pair of frames 20 and 30, each preferably of U- shaped formation and pivoted together as of a folding back, and comprises a pair of of levers or link.l 22, one at each end thereof, to the storage receptacle, each of these levers 22 being pivotally connected :it its lower end to such storage recep=acle and rigidly fastened at its upper end to the frame 20, whereby the frames may be pulled forwarder shoved backward in a manner which will be readily understood..
`For guiding the rear frame 304tlie endframes 2 are provided with suitable guideways 3l into which a stud or roller may is a'foldingleg 23 the ugper endv of whichand is connected by a link 24 with'the frame 30, whereby,.on
'2 l inseriert project, one. at each end loftliefraine'.
projects above the' frame 2 the shifting of the back to'form either a double bed or a davenport-the' leg will be auton'i'atically shifted into position to either support one section ofthe back in the positlon shownin Fig-3 V or into 'a folded position when the structure is'in. the form of a `davenpo rt.`
The frame 2O'vconstitu'tespa 'supporting i i .frame fora suitableyielding-mattress supporting means, shown herein as a metallic -f'fabric 25 stretched between the end bars of such frame, and carried bythis frame is a.-
suitable stuffed mattress 26 so secured there- 'f on. that one half thereof, as 26', will -beion --other half,v asd 26, will be on the other side' one side of the metallic fabric While the thereof, thus completely inclosing the same.
- This stuffed mattress maybe made-in two p arts, one on each side of the'mietalliefabric, oras asingle member and folded over thellengthwise extending bar.2Z connecting the end bars of the frame 20, andthe Sidethereof, as 2G, whichvforms the-back when the structure' is in the form 'of a davenport, -willusually be upholsteredwith some fancy material to form the cushion for the back of' thedavenport.- This frame20 -is prowhich may be formed separately from, oras 40 vided'with a suitable brace or side bar 28 Secured thereto in such ,manner that it'will extend a sutieient distance' below the inetallic fabric so as not to interfere with the apart of, or attached to the'stuft'ed mattress of the frame 20, whereby when the structure isin the form of a double bed this mattress will f cover the upholstered seat 17 of ,the (lavenport and so protect the same.
' and 30, pivotally connected. as they are,"
It will be observed-that the two frames 20 forni to a certain extent ,a book readily opened when the frame 20 is drawn forward, one frame, as 20, to form the'outerj half or extensible section o'f the doubl'e bed leyel with the -seat of the dav'enport when the mattress of the frame 30 is in. position ,-thereon, andthe -other to carry. its mattress 35,- whichis usually just a thinmattress, into position'to rest on the seat l7-of the. daven' port and protect the same,v While when the 'frames-20 and 30 are collapsed or closed this mattress of the frame()v and the mattress .26 ofthe frame 20 are\ folded together,
each .thus protectingthe other from dust and dirt. The 'bed 'clothing could, 'if de-A sired, be left between the two mattresses 26". Y and 35 when' closedup and thus obviate thel necessity of removing them each time the "j stuctureischanged into a davenport. It
will further be observed that Withoutreversivotally connected to each en d ofthe frame .ing the stuffed mattresses",- or. the frame 2O which carries them, the back of the davenport which is formed by this frame20 and ltsmetallic'fabric and stuffed mattress can be readily. drawn forward for use as a double bed,.with one'side, as 26, thereof .forming4 the cushion for the back when' the structure the extensiblev -section -when the structure is in thel form of a double bed. That, further' thegform of a davenport,' while the seat of 'is in the form of adavenport and the other side, as 2 6 ,thereof -forming the mattress of.
z more, the mattresses-26 and 35 are-protected each. by thev otherwhen the structure-is in the davenportis also protected bythe same mattress 35 'when .the structure is, in the form of 'a double bed, the cushion forming the back being at'that time turned under and so also protected.v It' will -be further ob-` served thatonlraising the seat of the davenport access tof thestorage receptacle is readily obtained, so that'pillows 'or'other articles vmay be. readily stored in or-removed fromsuch receptacle.
From the foregoingitwill be seenthat I am able to 'provide an' improved; davenport in which `the seat thereof is shifta-ble to per- I mit aeces'sto -a storage receptacle, and in which alsothe back may be utilized to form a'bed section withoutthereversing of such .back and in which'.furthermore-the mat- 'tresses formingv the bed. will be .protectedfrom dust and dirt when the structure is in a seatsection, partof which comprises a storage receptacle',' and a; back section, the
latter of whichis made up of a pair of Y frames connected together to be' opened up,4
to form a: protecting' means for the'seat tion and an additional bed section or to 'be closed to formt-heback ofthe fdavenport and protectthe bed mattresses. c.
-In practice thebars- 22 may b'e connected attheir lower. ends' by a .bar or tube, or these j' bars may -be themselves formed of tubes or pipes and formed in' one iece with suchA a.
connecting .ba r, which -atter could" run through the box 'from endjtoend,"or under.
ing frames connectedto the armfs.v
The thin'ma'ttress lcarried by the frame 30- it, thereby giving great rigidity t'o the fold# '12,0 forms a cover.for the seat or'seat section, Y
when'the structure is in-'the forma doug. ble bed, thusprotectingthe seat, which is v usually formedof a more expensive-mate-- r'ial. Obviously therefore, the thin mattress. carried-by the frame' 30 .ma vbemerely acover-infr for the seat when t e structurels inthe form of 'a -doub1e bed, since asfthej seat is made upof a spring andstuidmatl tress, it itself constitutes asucient mtl;-
io v` 20 and 30 are, when they are in their uptress for one half of the bed, andthere is therefore no necessity of providing the frame 30 with the usual thick mattress or with a metallic fabric. By having the frames and 30 formed of substantially the same size,it will be observed that it is unnecessary that 'the back should extend a considerable distancehelow the top of the seat. In other `Words by forming them in this manner, the lower edfre of the frames I 'right- .positiom adjacent to the .to-p of the seat. Not only this, but by forming them of Substantially the same size, the frame 30 when drawn 'forward will be 'of sutticient size to project entirely over the seat to protect the same, which as heretofore stated is usually formed Vof a more expensive material, and also obviates the necessity of providing the usual thick mattress to rest on top of the seat. Furthermore, it will be observed that the structure is very much simplitiecl by reason of the fact that the seat is immovable, and as it constitutes a means for supporting the rear frame 30, when the .structure is in the form of a double bed, it
thus obviates the necessity, as hereinbefore stated, of providing t-he rear frame with a thick mattress.
