This A invention relates to im rovements A in sectional shelving.

One object of the invention is to `provide an improved construction and rarrangement of shelving which may be readily set up or taken down or parts added to or removed therefronto vary the sizeof the same.

Another object is to provide a simple and inexpensive arrangement of sectional shelving, the parts of which when taken down for storing or shipping may be packed to occupy but a comparatively small space.

With the foregoing and other objects in view; the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Myimproved shelving comprises a series f of units which are adapted to be connected together to form sections thus providing for the construction of shelving of any desired length. Each of the units 1 comprises a base member 2. Each of the base members 2 comprises a bottom or base portion 3, a top portie-n 4 and end pieces 5, which are securely fastened together in any suitable 1 manner to form a base member of the desired size. In the present instance thebase members 2 are Vshown open. It is obvious, however, that shelves may be arranged in the base members or the same may be provided witli' drawers or closed in any suitable manner.

Secured on vthe top` portions 4 of the base members at their opposite ends are upwardly projecting shelf supporting frames 6 each of which is provided with racks 7 arranged vthereon and secured to the opposite sides thereof as shown. The frames 6 are connected together at their upper ends by top pieces 8. In the opposite ends of the ytop pieces 8 are formed dove tailed recesses 9 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. Adapted to be adjustably engaged ywith the racks 7 are shelf supporting cleats 10 upon which are adapted to rest the shelves 11. The shelves 11 are preferably notched out at their corners to 'fit around the racks as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 12 of the drawing.

The construction just described forms one unit of the shelving and by connecting a series of'such units together in the manner hereinafter described shelving of any desired length may be provided.

On the outer sides of the end 'pieces 5 of the base members of the units are secured cleats 12 upon which are engaged and supported the unit connecting base pieces and top pieces 3 and 4 which correspond to and are constructed inthe same manner as the base portion 3 and top portion 4 of the units. The top pieces 8 of the unit sections are connected together by top connecting pieces 13 having on their opposite endsudove tailed shaped projections 14 which are Vadapted to fit into the dove tailed recesses 9 in the ends of the top pieces of the units as shown. When two shelving units are thus connected together they form a section and to the opposite ends of the section thus formed may be connected other units by means of the connecting pieces just described, thus increasing the shelvingto any desired length. When a suitable length of shelving has thus been formed the outer units are closed y en covering pieces 15 on the upper ends of which are secured strips 16 having dove 'tailed shaped projections 17jv which are adapted to fit into the dove tailed recesses 9 in the outer end of the top iece of said end unit. On the inner sides o the end pieces 15 are also secured bracing cleats 1S which lit between the sides of the frames 6 and engage the inner sides of the upper and lower ends of the same. The end covering pieces may be secured to the outer sides of the end shelf frames by screws or other suitable fastening devices.

By constructing my improved shelving as herein shown and described it will be seen that parts of the same may be readily disassembled and packed to occupy a comparatively small space and which when the base members of the units are open, as shown' in the present instance, most of the parts forlnin the upper portions of the u shelving may e packed into said-open` base members.

-From the foregoing description taken in connection with Ithe accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

yVarious changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing 'any of the advantages-of this invention as delined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. Sectional shelving comprising a series of units spaced apart and each consisting of a base member, shelf supporting frames secured to the upper sides of the base members adjacent their opposite ends and to pieces connecting the upper ends of said frames, said top pieces having dovetailed recesses in their ends, end pieces adapted to cover the outer. shelf supporting frames, supporting strips secured 'to the upperends of said 'end pieces and having dovetailed projections adapted to engage a dovetailed recess' in the outer ends of the top pieces, a series of base connecting pieces arranged between and adapted to connect the bases of the units together, a top connecting piece` arranged between the units and provided at its opposite ends with dovetailed projections adapted to engage the 'recesses in the inner ends of the unit top pieces, and shelves eX- tending 'between and supported by the shelf supporting frames of all the units.

Sectional shelving comprising a series of units spaced apart and each consisting of a base member, cleats secured on the ends of the base members, shelf supporting frames secured to the upper sides of the base. member adjacent their opposite ends and top pieces connecting the upper ends of said shelf supportingframes, said top pieces having dovetailed recesses in their ends, end pieces resting on thc cleats on the base members and adapted to cover the outer shelf Supportingr frames, supporting strips secured to the upper ends of said end pieces and having dovetailed projections adapted to engage the dovetailed recesses in the outer ends of the unit top pieces, baseconnecting pieces having their ends engaged over the cleats on the ends oi the base members and extending between the same, and a top-connecting piece extending betweenthe units and provided at its ends With dovetailed projections engaging the recesses in the unit to-p pieces.
